zombu2: do you have an odroid-u3 or -xu3?

<derrick13>
i am starting to wonder the benefit of these SOC boards. How are they better than just a small form factor computer (INTEL,AMD64), that costs a little bit more. At least you know software will work and be available. I own the radxa, 3udoo, beaglebone,3P and they all have shortcomings. I am thinking of using small pc and arduino as I think i might get a better result
<c0d3z3r0>
derrick13: i think the power consumption is a big point. do you know any intel pc with less than 5W or 2.5W (raspberry pi)?
<derrick13>
yeah, i figured that was one
<derrick13>
c0d3z3r0: u looking to buy those odroid's. Dont they have the same problem as the rest of the boards.
<c0d3z3r0>
derrick13: yes, they have… i really can't understand why they all are fiddle around with their "own" kernels instead of contributing to the kernel community…. I don't know what to buy… the odroid kernels are at least a bit more up to date (3.14)
<derrick13>
i agree: I wonder what the 3.14 improves on when it comes to gpio and support for physcial devices
<c0d3z3r0>
there is some kind of support for those exynos cpus in the mainline kernel but i don't know how much. gpio support should be integrated in the odroid kernel
<c0d3z3r0>
but when i need gpio i use my rpi. the odroid or whichever devboard i will buy is going to become my rpi-home/webserver replacement. i only need 1 gpio for that
<derrick13>
i am trying thse various boards for home automation projects.
<derrick13>
the udoo would be perfect but they are lacking in dev support
<derrick13>
great idea but system sluggish
<derrick13>
is radxa devs working on newer kernel
<c0d3z3r0>
derrick13: mmind is working on 3.16/17. he could commit many improvements in the last weeks
<derrick13>
nice
<c0d3z3r0>
what about the raspberry pi b+? not enough gpios for you?
<c0d3z3r0>
i think i'll buy an odroid-xu3 and then try to merge the changes they made to the current mainline kernel… will be a stony road but i think it's worth a try
<derrick13>
i want to be able to run nodejs, freeswitch, motion, postgresql, opencv among other things smoothly
<derrick13>
headed out..
<c0d3z3r0>
ok… same problem here… mailserver, caldav, carddav, webserver, owncloud or seafile
<c0d3z3r0>
the only quad core boards i could find were odroid and radxa
<c0d3z3r0>
and the odroid-xu3 with octacore
