I was watching the october meeting, great stuff being a devops guy, I was just curious why services like pagerduty , pingdom, datadog (paid for services) is preferred over running your own system (ie. combination of nagios and graphite etc.). Is it strictly not having to roll your own and maintain it that offsets the cost?

I don't know why it is but it's so hard for me to not be automatically dismissive when it comes to off loading tasks that I traditionally take care of in house and that's just not how things are being done these days. It's not like it's even a money issue where I am but I still feel dirty even thinking about saas.
