<ohsix> whitequark: going to support IGES/STEP?
<ohsix> was looking at that a few months ago, cuz i wondered why nobody did it (everyone talks about dxf sucking or stl being not good for interchange, and offhand mention of step)
<ohsix> there's a weird version of some loader that's been translated from fortran or something out there
<whitequark> ohsix: yes, STEP
<whitequark> there's https://github.com/stepcode/stepcode which seems p decent
<whitequark> IGES is an utter nightmare
<ohsix> hm i think i saw that, but i wasn't exactly keeping notes or seriously looking :p
<ohsix> the slicers don't read step files either
<ohsix> it's kind of a weird thing like lisp but not obviously a programming language
<whitequark> it's more like XML
<whitequark> or rather SGML even
<whitequark> you have these weird EXPRESS schemas, which are like DTD
<ohsix> :| need to check out all the software nist publishes too
<ohsix> i migh tbe conflating it with iges
<whitequark> nist also made iges
<whitequark> have you seen iges? it's made for punched cards, and i don't mean like fortran was made for punched cards
<whitequark> i mean like mumps was made for punched cards
<ohsix> i'll have to refresh to have this conversation apparently :D
<ohsix> hrm was thinking of a specific part of step but none of these seem familiar
<whitequark> i'm sure it has many atrocities that i have yet to discover
<ohsix> hruhg
<ohsix> they probably need most of that stuff in STEP, but boy is it ever imposing if you are looking at supporting it
<ohsix> not that you actually want to have to, but it should be kind of straight forward to have your own impl in a few months of work (modulo extreme complexity)

<balrog> whitequark: how's it going?
<whitequark> balrog: what is?
<cr1901_modern> whitequark: it=="your life" I think.
<whitequark> well, I'm still alive
<reportingsjr> Hmmm, I need to create a sort of spring mechanism to hold a foot on to a microwave. Not unlike a toggle bolt where you put a spring loaded bit in to the hole and it spreads out once through the hole to lock in.
* reportingsjr tries to find a picture
<reportingsjr> To make the springy bits (I plan on only having them supported from one side rather than two in that picture) is the most reasonable option to just extrude out the center post, then extrude maybe a rectangle off of that and finally the two springy bits off of that?
