<NotAssembledProp> Hi. I've got a bit of a headscratcher here... I'm running a Tinkerboard(the original one). Have been running mostly TinkerOS, but tested other stuff. Now I wanted to give Armbian a spin, chose the recommended Buster XFCE Desktop Legacy
<NotAssembledProp> Problem is, it won't boot. Red LED goes on, then nothing. Tried booting with and without HDMI connected. Tried booting from several different SD cards that all work with TinkerOS or Android.
<NotAssembledProp> Tried booting with power via GPIO, and via Micro-USB. Only difference is that with Micro-USB, I can ping the Tinkerboard, but nothing else
<NotAssembledProp> No display, no SSH, no serial console.
<NotAssembledProp> Reflash card to use TinkerOS, Android or Retro Pie, and those boot just fine
<NotAssembledProp> I've checked Jira, searched the forums(as you can see from the attempts to boot with HDMI disconnected etc)
<lanefu> NotAssembledProp: have you tried an older image or a nightly to see if they work
<NotAssembledProp> Not yet. First I wanted to exclude if it was power or SD card issues
<lanefu> NotAssembledProp: what port speed are you using for serial console?
<NotAssembledProp> 115200
<lanefu> rockchip uses an insane port speed
<NotAssembledProp> 115200 works for me under TinkerOS also, so...
<NotAssembledProp> The weird issue is that when I boot with power over Micro-USB, it at least gets an IP address and can be pinged, but everything else is dead to the world
<lanefu> Port speed is 1500000 baud
<NotAssembledProp> No, that's dead for me too
<lanefu> via microusb?
<lanefu> power
<NotAssembledProp> Yes
<lanefu> have a trashcan handy?
<lanefu> try a nightly or an older image
<NotAssembledProp> Going to try Buster Current right now
<NotAssembledProp> Then step back to an older legacy image etc etc
<NotAssembledProp> OK, Buster Current XFCE Desktop boots just fine, from the same SD card *Bashes head*
<NotAssembledProp> HDMI, fine, SSH, fine, serial, fine...
<lanefu> :P
<NotAssembledProp> But the legacy desktop was recommended for the hardware acceleration etc... *sighs*

<NotAssembledProp> Buster Legacy build from march works
<NotAssembledProp> So... Hmm
<[TheBug]> Yeah you need to try a few and find one that is stable
<[TheBug]> if your intention is to run Nico's package on there for accel
<[TheBug]> different ones have different regressions for different rk3399 boards unfortunately
<[TheBug]> Also
<[TheBug]> another idea to try NotAssembledProp
<[TheBug]> is using armbian-config and choose different kernels
<[TheBug]> you can use some different kernels than the image comes packaged with by choosing them in the tool
<NotAssembledProp> Yeah, I was thinking of trying that, but would I have to do any other changes, if I choose the buster legacy kernel? Also, I'm running the original Tinkerboard, so 3288

<ArmbianTwitter> @th0rsteinn (Þorsteinn Sigurðsson): If you need a low budget NAS or Linux server, I can recommend @OdroidH’s HC4 „Toaster“ with @armbian Buster. 2 HDDs or SSDs, RAID, stable, fast, runs @OpenMediaVault. Great stuff. https://tinyurl.com/yjr7e6el (13s ago)

<rneese> so are you guys willing to start testing desktops ?
<rneese> we need testers
<HerculeP> hi rneese, I got two oroidc2 (w/ different ethernet chips), if I can help ...
<HerculeP> I know it is old, but still not /too/ old
<rneese> yeah 1 min'
<rneese> these are hte new images we have

<NotAssembledProp> Ok, so I tried what TheBug recommended earlier, and attempted to use the Boot Another Kernel via Armbian-config. It resulted with the same problems as flashing straight to Buster Legacy desktop, and totally unresponsive even with serial console
<NotAssembledProp> No usable logs on the SD-card either. Last legible log messages are from before I tried to reboot to the 4.4 legacy kernel. After that, logs are either empty, or, in the case of faillog and lastlog, filled with ^@ repeated for 200kiB, or for lastlog, R5^TTY^@, with the ^@ repeated for over 200kiB

<lanefu> HerculeP: yeah that's just a Amlogic curse that will seldom be defeated
<lanefu> unless someone gets angry enough to fight it for a weekend
<HerculeP> i think it worked w/ an older kernal, will check soon
<HerculeP> kernel even
<NotAssembledProp> lanefu: Had to go and do dinner shopping, sorry for not responding earlier.
<lanefu> no worries.. irc is async
<NotAssembledProp> But, I changed to Verbosity=7, and it made no difference.
<lanefu> bummer
<lanefu> whatever combo of u-boot plus legacy kernel must just be hella broken
<NotAssembledProp> I mean, it IS /var/log I should be looking in, right?
<NotAssembledProp> Here's from lastlog: R5`ttyS2^@^@^@ with the ^@ pattern repeating for 23kiB

<NotAssembledProp> Just to doublecheck: For the tinkerboard image, vmlinuz-4.4.213-rockchip is the correct buster legacy kernel, right?

<lanefu> NotAssembledProp: nah if its that broke you proably need serial console and thats where verbosity stuff should help
<lanefu> in theory that the right kernel.. honestly armbian doens't focus much on the legacy kernel
<lanefu> especially once mainlien works
<lanefu> so its very possible some combination of it and uboot is broken
<NotAssembledProp> And I don't even get serial console from that kernel, so yeah, something with uboot or early kernel stage seems to be utterly broken for that version
<NotAssembledProp> Ah well, thanks for the suggestions

<NotAssembledProp> I just wish some ARM licensee would manufacture an ARM CPU that can be socketed, and an accompanying Mini-ITX motherboard with RAM slots, PCI-E slots etc >:( Guess we're going to have to wait for some RISC-V gambler for that though... :/
mangix_ is now known as mangix
<IgorPec> if you want to have standard component, get a PC :)
<IgorPec> well, you have a few arm hw that is made that way
<IgorPec> arm servers
<IgorPec> since nobody has ordered such design (look on ARM world as a custom made computers), this will remain as is
<NotAssembledProp> Well, it's the classical problem of someone having to put the equipment out there on the market so people can buy it
<IgorPec> even there is no market?
<NotAssembledProp> Imagine how the market would have stagnated in the 70's and 80's, if manufacturers would just have waited until someone ordered something... *shudders*
<NotAssembledProp> Also, look at the RasPi. There were a lot of people who said that there was no market for a toy like that. They pushed it out anyway, and now there's a sizeable market for small SBC's
<IgorPec> but if people are buying less and less PCs?
<IgorPec> desktops
<IgorPec> this is something similar, but i doubt they have high sales
<IgorPec> to cover R&D
