starting with cubox-i, but not only

wolfy, bascially I need something for home server / development server
<mkad>
wolfy, which means I dont need gpu, but I do need processing power and ram
ijc has joined #cubieboard

wolfy, and its good if it does not take too much power since at home I have to pay for electricity
<mkad>
I might go for Exynos
<wolfy>
mine is on its way :)
<mkad>
I was thinking about Parallela
<mkad>
16 cores
<mkad>
and it has Xilinx FPGA Fabric
<mkad>
but I am low on $ now;)
<mkad>
FPGA could be useful for other nice projects

<mkad>
wolfy, I am curious how it will perform, I am happier now with cubie after setting governor to performance, but its still too laggy for development server...
<mkad>
even website is not every responsive and 1Gb RAM is very little for dynamic web page ...
<mkad>
and so on:)

mkad, "development server" and dynamic web pages all running from an SD card?
hipboi has quit [Read error: Connection timed out]
<mkad>
rm, my previous question here was whether nand is faster than sd card or sata drive, but I got confused being asked a questions what is your benchmark ? or got not related to my questions suggestions, "get a faster sd card"
<rm>
SATA drive will be an order of magnitude faster than SD card or NAND
<mkad>
rm, oh... thanks
<mkad>
rm, I have sata but I am not using it
<rm>
or you can also get some cheap SATA SSD
<mkad>
maybe I should:D
<mkad>
I have ssd sata 120gb
<mkad>
:P
<mkad>
its new disk 1 year old so probably sata3
<rm>
I suspect after this it won't feel so "laggy" anymore, but still, use some common sense (i.e. caching of dynamic pages)
<mkad>
rm, changing governor to performance from demand feels like 3x faster
<rm>
e.g. installing and configuring PHP-XCache reduced request handling time in my tests by 5x or so, if I remember correctly
<rm>
also PHP running as FastCGI (persistent workers), not as simple CGI
<mkad>
rm, I am running python mezzanine/django framework
<mkad>
via wsgi
<mkad>
and I am using guincorn which is not the fastest app server but has strong ground with standard

yeah i think i saw the case somewhere for 9.99, i was planning on getting it as well as some other accessories.
<rneese__>
yeah
<rneese__>
the issue I see is everything goes up in price when it hits the US market
<anunnaki>
i was trying to remember how much it was when it was on that one fund raising site the devs were selling them for to raise money for the project. i wwas like a week too late in buying some, they already raised enough money and closed the fund
<anunnaki>
rneese__: yeah the u.s. market is ran by a bunch of greedy wallstreet crooks.
<anunnaki>
wondering if i could buy it from overseas for cheaper like i do with all my other stuff.
shineworld has joined #cubieboard
<anunnaki>
id like to get it for just a few bucks more than the rpi
<rneese__>
yes but its about a 1 month leway to get it
drachensun_ has joined #cubieboard
<anunnaki>
heh i see some things havent changed, there was always a wait when i first found out about it.. sold out everywhere. hmm maybe i should just get an rpi.
<anunnaki>
hmm i was wanting it over the rpi just because it could do bluetooth and at the time the rpi didnt even mention it
<wolfy>
anunnaki: BT and wi-fi require usb dongles
<Night-Shade>
the RPi is all done on USB
<Night-Shade>
the ethernet is on a shared usb bus with the 2 usb ports
<Night-Shade>
the cubie has muc better connectivity
<rneese__>
and we have a script for cubian to turn your cubie into a pbx
<anunnaki>
wait, the cubie3 doesnt require the usb dongles though right? its built in or is it just able to have bt/wifi and we have to buy the dongles
<rneese__>
so order 2
<anunnaki>
whats pbx\
<rneese__>
private branch exchange / phone system
<anunnaki>
yeah my project requires two anyway.. im trying to have them communicate with each other and swap files with the other
<Night-Shade>
the cubietruck wifi/bt is on a usb dongle
<Night-Shade>
wired in but on the usb bus
<anunnaki>
Night-Shade: does it take away from one of the open usb ports? because couldnt one just buy a wifi/bt usb dongle for the cubie1 and cubie2
<anunnaki>
i think i foudn a bt/wifi all in one dongle for 10$ online so i could probably just get the cubie2 then and throw that in there
<Night-Shade>
nope the dongle is just wired in to the usb bus
<anunnaki>
tell me more about this pbx phone system. so what does that mean? that we can make phone calls? just like a regular phone that we plug in a phone cord?
unixjazz has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]
<Night-Shade>
it's complex, it's like having your own little phone exchange
<anunnaki>
is there info about it on the cubieboard's site?
<anunnaki>
but realistically i just need to have the two devices somehow connect to each other and swap files automatically when they get in range.. i was planning on bt, and somehow doing away with needing a pairing key
<Night-Shade>
adhoc wifi?
<Night-Shade>
BT is pretty low bandwidth
<rneese__>
I update dthe script
<anunnaki>
i considered the alternatives like using wifi to connect to each other and doing that, but not sure how wifi works if it can be done
<rneese__>
I wrote the install and I maintain the armhf pkgs
<Night-Shade>
I try to avoid anything todo with PBX's :)
<rneese__>
lol
<anunnaki>
that freepbx.org isnt that informative. it assumes the visitor already knows what a pbx is all about. had to go into their forum which also idnt have a general overview of the pbx. now im at their wiki that was posted in their forum
caveat- has joined #cubieboard
<anunnaki>
Night-Shade: what exactly does low bandwidth mean for the connection? less range or slower transfer?
<anunnaki>
i originally thought about IR but need the devices aimed at each other wasnt ideal, so that brought me to bluetooth, but then thought about wifi since it has better range than bluetooth. just dont know how to work with wifi to connect to another wifi machine that isnt a router. unless i build a linux router into the cubie somehow.. so that both cubies would be routers.. could it be possibe?
<wolfy>
fwiw, rpi works perfectly as pbx in a low traffic env. several friends use at home such a setup. one of them has half a dozen phones + one FXO
<rneese__>
the pi for 2 to 5 exten and 3 calls is fine
<rneese__>
but not when you want real service
<wolfy>
hence "low traffic..."
<wolfy>
anunnaki: look into ad-hoc wi-fi connections
<AE7IK>
It works for me in some of my designs, but that's a special case.
