<glowcoil> ELLIOTTCABLE: yeah the point is that potential difference is like a difference in height between two points, and then anything with a potential drop is like an actual physical drop in height
<glowcoil> ELLIOTTCABLE: so, every actual wire is a resistor, so every little segment of it has a voltage drop, since there is heat and collisions in everything
<glowcoil> ELLIOTTCABLE: (aside: wires and regular resistors get *more* resistive, and thus more voltage-dropping, and more converting-electromotive-force-to-heat-ing, the hotter it gets
<glowcoil> ELLIOTTCABLE: since more collisions)
<glowcoil> ELLIOTTCABLE: (whereas like, semiconductors get *less* resistive the hotter you get them)
<glowcoil> ELLIOTTCABLE: anyway, so everything is a little resistive. even batteries have like internal resistance. in ideal circuits, however, you model the entire circuit as: a source of emf, which is like a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lock_(water_transport) or whatever in that it raises the electrons in "height", or gives them a constant push/pull, or however you want to think about the increase in potential
<glowcoil> ELLIOTTCABLE: and then, a bunch of ideal wires, with no resistance, and then a resistor that represents all the resistance throughout the circuit
<glowcoil> ELLIOTTCABLE: like, a battery and a resistor in sequence, even though the battery and the wires themselves *are* the resistor
<glowcoil> ELLIOTTCABLE: often
<glowcoil> (i mean, i don't make circuits so i mean, often in physics problems for a class, not in real life applications, though that's probably still applicable)
<glowcoil> :p
<glowcoil> 10:07:28 <+prophile> in my experience neither the top-down or the bottom-up approach are particularly good...
<glowcoil> 10:07:33 <+prophile> just learn things as they come and make connections
<glowcoil> 10:08:01 <+prophile> the "chaos" approach to learning :3
<glowcoil> ELLIOTTCABLE: so basically, throughout the wires and resistors and whatever, you're constantly falling, because you're losing potential in the form of heat to the surrounding air due to collisions in the wires etc. and then the battery is lifting up the electrons/exterting a push and pull at that point, so right out the gates of the battery, you're high up, and you go all the way around and right before you get back to the battery you're at the ...
<glowcoil> ... lowest point, and then it brings you back up, and when you have returned to your starting point, your total height has not changed at all--you've come full circle
<glowcoil> ELLIOTTCABLE: any of this sticking?

<ELLIOTTCABLE> oh gods I just downloaded Eclipse
<ELLIOTTCABLE> I'm trembling with fear
<ELLIOTTCABLE> enabled debug mode on my Glass, pretty sure that means Java can now speak INTO MY BRAIN
<ELLIOTTCABLE> this seems, somehow, like a terrible idea.

<purr> ELLIOTTCABLE: hi!
<ELLIOTTCABLE> fine, everybody except purr can ignore me
<ELLIOTTCABLE> I'mma put purr on my Glass so I never feel alone
eligrey_ is now known as eligrey
<eligrey> hi purr
<purr> eligrey: hi!
<eligrey> that should cover all of my his for today
* devyn hugs purr
* purr rrrr
<glowcoil> ELLIOTTCABLE: lol eclipse glass brain
<purr> lol
<upgrayeddd> lol ELLIOTTCABLE jumped the shark
<purr> lol
<upgrayeddd> i dont even know who you are anymore man
<whitequark> ELLIOTTCABLE: the first answer is close to my views
<whitequark> except yeah. 1/4W 5% resistors are more than fine
<whitequark> also, a bunch of diodes and LEDs
<glowcoil> man my voice is hoarse
<glowcoil> screamed a lot at a mewithoutyou concert
<glowcoil> nuck: you've listened to them, right?

<alexgord_> whitequark: actually not
<alexgord_> efficiently, anyway
<whitequark> what if I've been listening to a song for like several years
<whitequark> and I've just realized it is about heroin
<whitequark> how dumb I am, on scale 1-10 ?
<whitequark> now, what if it explicitly says "heroin" ?
<joelteon> is it by the velvet underground
<whitequark> no
<whitequark> a russian band
