I guess working hours are cheap and laptops expensive where he lives

solder balls in a can, awesome

filling a 724 or more into tiny stencil holes however is a game I don't wanna play

DocScrutinizer05: (3h) I would certainly repair a laptop for 3h rather than buying another one (cheaper) or sending it to service center (at least 14 days in an official one even if you pay)
<whitequark>
although the optimal option is probably go to a flea market and find a guy who does that for a living, and pay him something like $30-$60

hmm, here you can't find guys who can do proper reballing on a fleamarket. And anybody who can do will charge you 50 bucks / h at least
<DocScrutinizer05>
EUR, not $
<whitequark>
here there's dozens of them at even just one market
<whitequark>
cellphones, laptops, everything
<DocScrutinizer05>
wow
<whitequark>
though I wouldn't count on *all* of them being able to properly reball, but I know for sure that you can ask and it'll be done
<whitequark>
so at least some do

DocScrutinizer05: (scope) depending on what price level you're looking at, you may want to have a closer look at rigol DS1000Z or and siglent SDS2000. the 1000Z should still be "hackable" by entering a code that unlocks advanced features. so you can get a basic model but use it like a better one.
<wpwrak>
the siglent is very new and has appealing specs. the company has been around for a while and seems to do good work. sds2000 is similar to rigol's DS2000A, but specs are a bit better, the price of comparable units is considerably lower, there are 4 channel versions in the line (rigol's ds2000 only have 2), and the siglent also has optional 8 digital channels
<wpwrak>
the rigol DS2000 series can also be "hacked", which would offset the specs and price difference, but they fixed that in the DS2000A, which is current now
<wpwrak>
but it all depends on how many channels and what bandwidth you want

if I ever need a million or two I think I'll create one of these kickstarter projects ;)
<rjeffries>
larsc: ok, but on the merits, udoo is a fairly nice and reasonably open machine. It is a dufferent approach than Ben Nanonote, obviously.

imx6 is sane for foss (mostly)
<roh>
good soc support in mainline afaik
<roh>
freescale is usually also one of the 'good guys' when it comes to nda or not and datasheets
<larsc>
the bunny laptop uses the same SoC, iirc
<roh>
jup
<roh>
so we'll get nice drivers too... there was some guy who got hired to do the gpu stuff afaik
<rjeffries>
I honestly do not remember, were Ben Nanonote schematics editable? As to PCB layout, there was an earlt effort to revise it, but due to a personality clash (as I recall) that did not go anwhere. In any case, Ben Nanonote was a delightful project, it failed to attract critical mass, and teh main guy on busines side moved on.
