insane question. Can I control where Gemfile.lock gets placed when it is autogenerated? Like can I tell it to drop into /tmp instead of cwd?

<Radar>
Zero_Chaos: Why not just run a script that runs bundle install and then once that's complete copies Gemfile.lock to another location?
<Zero_Chaos>
Radar: problem is that the user running the application may not have rights to modify things in the dir where Gemfile lives. So I need Gemfile.lock to generate somewhere else.
<Radar>
Zero_Chaos: sounds like a very weird usecase
<Zero_Chaos>
Radar: this may come as a surprise, but sometimes people don't run every command with sudo in front.
<Radar>
Zero_Chaos: I know that :)
<Radar>
This is not my first day on the computer.
<Zero_Chaos>
Radar: just checking, could have been an ubuntu user ;-0
<Zero_Chaos>
;-)
<Radar>
Zero_Chaos: I don't know how to change where Gemfile.lock goes, sorry.
<Zero_Chaos>
Radar: np, I said at that start that it's an insane question. I realize it's outside normal use and may not even be possible, but figured it's worth asking.

Zero_Chaos: ordinarily the Gemfile.lock is generated during development and committed to the repo/packaged with the artifact
<tmoore>
Zero_Chaos: during deployment, it shouldn't need to change

Is there a way to JUST update the Gemfile.lock without installing gems?

rb2k: sort of
robbyoconnor has quit [Excess Flood]
<Zero_Chaos>
rb2k: "bundle install --local" will regenerate Gemfile.lock based on what you currently have available, if everything you need is already installed it works, otherwise, it will fail and tell you why.
robbyoconnor has joined #bundler
<rb2k>
yeah, I’m still trying to find a way to NOT install them
<Zero_Chaos>
rb2k: if it fails, it will only give you one error at a time though, so if you are missing multiple things it will tell you one at a time.
<rb2k>
just update the Gemfile.lock and the vendor/cache directory
<Zero_Chaos>
I don't know anything about a "vendor/cache directory", I believe the command I provided only updates the lock file.
<rb2k>
it also installs the gems if they aren’t present
<Zero_Chaos>
--local means don't install new things iirc.
<Zero_Chaos>
or at least, don't download new things
<Zero_Chaos>
another command which may be useful is "check"
<Zero_Chaos>
that does something useful... I forget exactly what.
<rb2k>
local just doesn’t go to rubygems.org
<rb2k>
and will try to rely on the vendor/cache dir
