Hi, I have a cubietruck and running official debian server. I setup a samba server on it and use SATA2 cable connected with a hdd. the share directory is in this hdd. hdparm gives 109 MB/s on this hdd and dd command shows 80 MB/s write speed. BUT the samba speed is very slow, about 3 MB/s only. scp speed is only 4 MB/s. I even tried scp user@localhost:file . it still shows 4 MB/s. what is the problem? thanks.
<FR^2>
What's your network connection?

<sgo11>
FR^2, sorry about the late reply. I just read your message. there is no message notification in my IRC client. Does my network connection matter if scp localhost speed is slow? I am using cable connection. I tried the command "scp user@localhost:file .". to the same hdd disk. it's 4 MB/s. this is very slow. not acceptable. thanks.
<sgo11>
I am trying to update the kernel by doing apt-get dist-upgrade. not sure if that will make any difference. I am using the official debian server system.
<FR^2>
Well, if your cable connection is only 10MBit...
<FR^2>
If you have 100MBit, max. speed is a bit more than 10MByte/sec
<sgo11>
FR^2, will scp localhost go through my cable?
<FR^2>
no
<sgo11>
FR^2, then, the problem is nothing related to the cable then. I mentioned that I tried scp localhost in the first post.
<FR^2>
tbh, I don't have any good explanation for your issue. The cable connection is one possible reason why transfer rates are slow
<sgo11>
FR^2, with the command "scp user@localhost:file ." it shows 4 MB/s. hdparm test shows 109 MB/s. dd write shows 80 MB/s. I am very confused too.
<sgo11>
by the way, will apt-get dist-upgrade update the kernel? ARM system might be different. that way will not upgrade my kernel. then there is no need to update then.
<sgo11>
the author has the slow samba too with lubuntu (debian based) system. after it changes to Arch linux, the samba performance is good. maybe I should try arch linux.... does official site provide such image?
<FR^2>
scp localhost - what sense does that make?
<FR^2>
sgo11: There is no archlinux image, but a good page with instructions
<sgo11>
FR^2, it does not make sense except I am trying to debug my slow issue. I am trying to see if that is because of my cable connection or networking kernel inside that OS has some problem. then, my guess is correct. scp user@localhost:file ./ has the same slow issue. then, my problem is nothing related to the cable connection.
<FR^2>
maybe try without encryption and only network transfer (without reading from disc), e.g. transferring /dev/zero via network, just to make sure my suggestion is wrong :)
<sgo11>
I never use archlinux before. is that good? what is the difference btw archlinux and gentoo?
<sgo11>
btw, I never use gentoo too. :)
<sgo11>
FR^2, how can I do that? transfer /dev/zero via network? thanks.
<FR^2>
For a long time I have been using gentoo. Although I like the gentoo way (you can specify any configurable options of each package) but in the last few years it lacks support/package maintenance.
<FR^2>
For about two years I've been using more and more archlinux. Good package maintenance, rolling release, community provided additional packages, ...
<FR^2>
I only got an old server I still haven't reinstalled that runs gentoo.
<FR^2>
even my USB Armory runs archlinux :D (well, I'm a fan, and why use different things at the same time?)

<sgo11>
FR^2, I just did "dd if=/dev/zero bs=1M count=100 | ssh user@localhost dd of=/dev/null". it shows 6.5 MB/s.

I don't know what the final nc test does. trying to figure out how to run those command.
<sgo11>
anyway. I think I just try archlinux first. this is just very weird.
<FR^2>
if you have a spare microSD, why not :)
<sgo11>
FR^2, yeah, I got one. let me see where I put it. :) by the way, how to install and remove a package in archlinux? thanks.
<FR^2>
pacman -S <pkg> - there's a gui named "octopi"
<sgo11>
FR^2, thanks a lot. I don't need a gui. after following the instruction you gave to me, will it boot to console mode by default? or will it run xserver by default? thanks.

FR^2 is quit. who can help me on archlinux? after following the online instruction, I only get two penguins on the monitor. the system can not be booted.
