<Phay> sweet bby jesus
<mofoso2> I've just started with gridcoin, is there a realtion between boinc credits and gridcoin wallet?
<mofoso2> I have 32k boinc credits and just recieved a 0.021 grc transaction, witch is a little dissapointing D:
<apc> neural network syncd, showing my mag at 3.75. w00t w00t!
<customminer> mofoso2: Magnitude is the important factor, effectively you're rewarded for your percentage of team RAC on an individual project basis.
<apc> wallet still says mag 0, but I like the neural number better
<mofoso2> mag says: 2.0
<mofoso2> Thanks, another thing, not so important, just curious
<mofoso2> what is that fulf %: below the cpid on the GUI ?

<Musicman9566> :-) Looking for help to get Gridcoin working, I'm so close but keep running into newie challenges
<Erkan_Yilmaz> how do you know you are close ?
<Mercosity> Ask zee
<Mercosity> question
<Musicman9566> I have one project that seems to be working properly but one that just won't sync
<Erkan_Yilmaz> sync where ?
<Musicman9566> I can't get "gridcoin.pool" to appear under my acct heading
<Erkan_Yilmaz> you have added the pool via account manager in boinc ?
<Musicman9566> It is still my own login name, I went through the set up steps 3 different time looking for a step that I have missed. There has to be something I'm overlooking
<Musicman9566> Yes
<Erkan_Yilmaz> you removed the project always, i assume ?
<Musicman9566> Yes
<Erkan_Yilmaz> did you exit boinc and restart also ? to see that it is gone after restart
<Mercosity> sync with gridcoin pool
<Musicman9566> I can't say for sure if I did a restart but I did sync with gridpool
<Erkan_Yilmaz> if the old project is not really gone, syncing won't help you
<Erkan_Yilmaz> because it exists, so the pool wouldn't create it new
<Musicman9566> Gridcoin does show up under Team heading
<Erkan_Yilmaz> and in general my view on the pool:
<Erkan_Yilmaz> !pool
<GRCB0T> GridCoin.co Pool: http://pool.gridcoin.co/
<fediverse> There is a Gridcoin pool available: http://pool.gridcoin.co
<fediverse> - it's easier for newcomers to get started, e.g. you get faster GRC this way (instead of longer waiting time for solo mining)
<fediverse> - disadvantages: 5% fee; your BOINC work is attributed to the pool, not under your name; you can't vote in Gridcoin polls
<GRCB0T> Title: GridCoin.co Pool (beta) (at pool.gridcoin.co)
<Musicman9566> That's what I'm trying to get connected with but I'm not getting it to appear under my Account Heading
<Musicman9566> I prefer pool mining as a newbie
<Erkan_Yilmaz> make a screenshot please: 1. of the working one you said
<Erkan_Yilmaz> 2. of the one you said not working
<Erkan_Yilmaz> put it on imgur or something
<Mercosity> if your acc is in your name you are solo on that project. You will have to remove the project from BOINC Man completely. Go to Gridcoin.co pool find mc and attach project there and sync with pool. Pool should then come up instead of your name. I also had this problem and this solved it.
<Musicman9566> Mercosity I think I went through those steps but I will try again
<Mercosity> Click on project and click remove. You won't lose the work you did you'll still get it.
<Mercosity> solo
<Musicman9566> Erkan_Yilmaz not sure of imgur, still learning
<Erkan_Yilmaz> take your time
<Musicman9566> Mercosity I'll give it a try once more
<Mercosity> Don't fret I'm a newb too and I got all my help here. Patience and go through all the steps and you'll get there.

<Musicman9566> I removed the project from Boinc Mgr., went to GridCoin.co Pool (Beta) and found the project was still in the list of chosen projects. Do I detach and reattach or remove completely there also
<Mercosity> Getting the wallet to work can be more of a problem. If it RAINS here and you get GRC and you send them to your wallet and it recieves its great.
<Mercosity> You should not have to detach and reattach just go back to BOINC man and sync with pool now & problem should be solved!?
<Musicman9566> I was able to see the work already, I was on here working through the same issue when it rained on us.

<Peppernrino> 950's.
<Peppernrino> $150 a pop
<Peppernrino> sick power

<Mercosity> Might as well go the whole hog and burn the place down! but it has to be cheep cheep!
<Peppernrino> your dad was expensive
<Chick3nman> if power is an issue, there is an Asus 960 that runs on pure 75W PCI-e power
<Chick3nman> if not, buy used GPUS and grab a bunch of 970s for <200$ each

<Chick3nman> :P
<Peppernrino> that's actually decent
<Chick3nman> ik
<Peppernrino> i ahve a 5770 and i like it
<Chick3nman> cool
<Peppernrino> the 5670's leave something to be desired
<Chick3nman> the 5970 is a holy grail of processing but unless you get the super rare special editions, its 1gb of VRAM per GPU
<Chick3nman> so
<Peppernrino> had weird artifacting and stuff during video playback
<Chick3nman> not much can be done with that
<Chick3nman> yeah all the older VLIW cards were kinda funky
<brewsmithy> Mercosity do the rounds to the donation stores ( salvation army etc ) you might get lucky

<Erkan_Yilmaz> customminer: about (1): writing? like what ? you mean summaries of the threads? (1) Anyone writing up content for saturday's call? Or is everyone going to wing it? :P
<customminer> like content for saturday's call
<brewsmithy> anyone run atlas@home with any success?
<customminer> I'm rewriting my entire stance on the team requirement
* Erkan_Yilmaz thought an audio call is for that, to speak about something
<customminer> yeah, but idk.. good to have footnotes :D
* brewsmithy points out having notes of valuable topic material generally provides an environment which promotes well thought out dialog
<Erkan_Yilmaz> my original plan was: to read some of the old threads and for some just listen what will be old by others
<Erkan_Yilmaz> told
<customminer> I've posted an invitation to join the conference call in the 4th gen boinc credit thread, hopefully one or two from the thread will show up (unlikely lol)
* brewsmithy rephrases - having notes makes better meetings
* customminer concurs
<Erkan_Yilmaz> notes or not, there won't be outcomes from the meeting anways, perhaps that a few people try Gridcoin. For serious stuff will be polls afterwards
<Erkan_Yilmaz> but the audio call is good for: getting hints of sockpuppet accounts
<customminer> you say this.. but you never know.. it likely will influence polls
<Erkan_Yilmaz> sock puppets won't all join the call
<Erkan_Yilmaz> the first meeting will very likely be confuse
<customminer> & full of anxiety
<customminer> lol
<Erkan_Yilmaz> except you do strict modertaion, like timing topics for 5 mins or so, which itself would "hurt"
<customminer> Idk if we should strictly moderate it, the 1hr time was a very rough estimate - it likely will last longer
<Erkan_Yilmaz> well, if it gets too deep in context we lose chance of newcomers going away again
<customminer> yeah true
<Erkan_Yilmaz> probably doing the easy stuff at first, the stuff for newcomers and the deeper things later on
<customminer> Think we should bother with introductions? Or just have them as new users speak up?
* Erkan_Yilmaz assumed the call is anyways for grabbing people from beyondbitcoin
<Erkan_Yilmaz> since it's organized on "their platform"
Musicman9566 has joined #gridcoin
<customminer> It is somewhat for introducing the beyondbitcoin community to gridcoin, so I'm probably going to talk about our integration with bitshares first then let chris talk about Blockpay then we can get down to talking in depth about gridcoin topics.
<Erkan_Yilmaz> it'd be good to post what you just said also on the thread
<brewsmithy> post an agenda possibly, or you may have already, i havent looked yet
<customminer> I shall do, it's currently still open to suggestions from the community.
<Erkan_Yilmaz> Intros: I think a few people should do, but not many. People can come later on to irc or so and get to know people they are interested in
<Erkan_Yilmaz> also, no one could prove when I say I am Angela Merkel in the call
<customminer> true
<Erkan_Yilmaz> you should also tell clearly, when questions are allowed
<Erkan_Yilmaz> e.g. after each topic
<Erkan_Yilmaz> or even during the topics
<customminer> Probably during, I'm hopefully not going to be doing 100% of the talking :P
<brewsmithy> we need a hot woman's voice as the host, sex sells, just saying
<Erkan_Yilmaz> well, I though the oldtimers or th eones posting a lot in the threads, like you, NeuralMiner
<Erkan_Yilmaz> do much :-)

<Gunde> NeuralMiner: Yea
<NeuralMiner> that's whack.
<lestus> whats wuprop?
<NeuralMiner> it's a non intensive project.
<NeuralMiner> so you can run it and it wont take a slot of a WU
<Gunde> A lot of VM boxes with 1 Core each, or if he´s not trick the NCI flag.
<Gunde> There are some talk that you can change nci flag to trick it to be able to handle more then 1 task.
<NeuralMiner> sounds like he might've figured it out.
<Gunde> So i hope we don´t whitelist GoofyxGrid
<NeuralMiner> what's up with goofy?
<NeuralMiner> runs like wuprop?
<Gunde> Hal9000 did the same to Gridcoin finance
<Gunde> but he was not in gridcoin team
<Gunde> NCI with 3 diffrent application i think
<lestus> gridcoin finance ha sshut down now, no?
<Gunde> just tested it forwith one task.
<customminer> NeuralMiner: Yeah, graalcloud got banned lol..
<Gunde> lestus: some issues to it so yea for now
<NeuralMiner> interesting.
<lestus> is wuprop whitelisted?
<NeuralMiner> yes.
<lestus> kewl i'll run that along with my other projects
<lestus> does it take a core?
<lestus> or rather a thread?
<NeuralMiner> no. you'll still run the same amount of WUs plus wuprop.
<NeuralMiner> so i have 8 cores, 8 WUs running plus wuprop.
<NeuralMiner> wish i could find one of his WUs on wuprop and see what he's doing.
<lestus> awesome, thanks, legitimately without tricks, could be a shit-ton of singlecore cloud hosted vms
<customminer> NeuralMiner: http://wuprop.boinc-af.org/show_user.php?userid=131615 It's entirely due to goofyxgrid..
<GRCB0T> Title: HackerChai (at wuprop.boinc-af.org)
<NeuralMiner> jesus.
<customminer> NeuralMiner: So he might not be hacking, but rather is boosting his RAC with a project outside the whitelist.
<customminer> NeuralMiner: For him, goofyxgrid might as well be whitelisted lol..
<NeuralMiner> how would that work though? each wuprop WU runs for 6 hours and give you 14 credits. static.
<customminer> NeuralMiner: No idea.
<NeuralMiner> time to spool a few hundred azure VMs...
<NeuralMiner> lol
<lestus> oh god, for the price of one of those i can run up 10 vps at vultr.com or digitalocean.com
<NeuralMiner> i get free credits every month.
<lestus> ah then nice
<lestus> nothing beats free
<NeuralMiner> exactly.
<lestus> best part no electricity bill
<NeuralMiner> the profit killer.
<lestus> i have one vm web server with 2 cores, it does other things too, but none of them are cpu intensive so i run boinc to utilise it to max capacity, but really it's so weak those two tasks take long, and only two of them, not worth running just for boinc
<NeuralMiner> maybe. even an odroid c2 gets me ~5 mag.
<customminer> goofyxgrid isn't cpu intensive, so theoretically you could throw it in docker and run hundreds of instances on a single machine?
<lestus> customminer: mind blown
<NeuralMiner> curious if that would work.
<lestus> same
<lestus> might be onto something
<lestus> as in how he's done it

<customminer> NeuralMiner: Indeed, ethereum you can run smart contracts on a blockchain.. but with BOINC you can run real computation on computers.
<Erkan_Yilmaz> my logic is like that: if someone cheats and gets lot sof money, why should I even bother mining GRC ?
<NeuralMiner> it'd be a great incentive.
<aybiss> erkan i agree but it's hard to say what's esoteric and what's useful - is searching for aliens actually helping anyone?
<Erkan_Yilmaz> if someone does really medical BOINC projects, I might be more happier that he gets GRC
<Erkan_Yilmaz> if the benefit is not immediately seeable or arguable class B or less
<customminer> I prefer a magnitude multiplier voting mechanism over set multipliers for categories of project.
<customminer> Although, my comments/posts in that thread are months old, they need revisited before being taken 100% seriously.
<Erkan_Yilmaz> about commercial: are there even ones existing yet for BOINC ?
<Erkan_Yilmaz> I could take WCG which is by IBM, so perhaps them
<Erkan_Yilmaz> though if I remember correct they say it is non-commercial or so
<Erkan_Yilmaz> if there don't exist commercial proj. yet for BOINC after 10? years

<NeuralMiner> it's weird there hasnt been a commercial project yet, to be honest.
<Erkan_Yilmaz> or if we all just decrypt our own messages, phone calls which the NSA and so give us over a "fake BOINC" project, we can not know what is inside the WUs
<Erkan_Yilmaz> my guess: if you can cheat in BOINC, there won't come commercial ones
<customminer> Erkan_Yilmaz: It's non-profit, but it's research is used for commerical purposes (development of vaccines/medicines etc)
Terravale has quit [Quit: http://www.kiwiirc.com/ - A hand crafted IRC client]
<Erkan_Yilmaz> thx
<customminer> Erkan_Yilmaz: Not all projects are cheatable, if the 4th gen BOINC credit system is developed then that'd be a breakthrough. In the mean time, there are methods of preventing cheating.
brewsmithy has quit [Client Quit]
Terravale has joined #gridcoin
<customminer> We should certainly discuss potential commercial projects, it might catch the attention of beyond bitcoin crowd
<Erkan_Yilmaz> from what I read back then at the 5th-gen-thread
<Erkan_Yilmaz> throwing in commercial or so willjust make them cry louder
<Erkan_Yilmaz> correction: 4th-gen-credit-system
<Erkan_Yilmaz> the problem or good thing, it depends, is: that gridocin is powered by BOINC
<Deviantone> ^
<Erkan_Yilmaz> and the beyondbitcoin people certainly are not doing boinc at the moment
<Erkan_Yilmaz> they are probably in for the money
Zach_S has joined #gridcoin
<Erkan_Yilmaz> another problem that will come with commercial and so:
<Erkan_Yilmaz> it willbring people with good hardware in, thus making the current gridcoin user's power less
<customminer> Not a concern tbh, it's inevitable.
<Erkan_Yilmaz> not sure if it is not a concern
<Erkan_Yilmaz> the user base now has fought through different problems and still stays
<customminer> Regarding the increase in computing power difficulty. Gridcoin distribution will be across a larger quantity of users thus it will become more scarce, hopefully the price will rise and those crunching to cover electricity will still be able to cover costs.
<Erkan_Yilmaz> the "commercial guys" might leave again one day
<Erkan_Yilmaz> I haven't thought it through yet, but I think when the price of GRC rises, less people might mine
<Erkan_Yilmaz> I am also now thinking to invest the enegery I "waste" better in speculating with GRC
<customminer> The entire BOINC community has been crunching for over a decade for free, rewards are beneficial but not everything to a lot of people. Sure there will be those who are only in it for a profit, and they should understand that Gridcoin is significantly undervalued & it's going to be rewarded to a growing quantity of users in the future.
<Erkan_Yilmaz> look at the current price of GRC
<Erkan_Yilmaz> the problem is that it's a herd or greed effect
<customminer> Idk, if the price of Gridcoin rises significantly I think more users will crunch - profitability gets better as the value goes up.
<Erkan_Yilmaz> if you know that others can make money, you also want to make money
<Erkan_Yilmaz> your altruism or whatever goes down the river
AJG has quit [Quit: http://www.kiwiirc.com/ - A hand crafted IRC client]
<Erkan_Yilmaz> but it's true that BOINC users have doing for free, me also
<customminer> yeah true about altruism, but it's still there in the background. Even if you're just investing, buying GRC is like buying completed past research.
<customminer> What's important to remember is that anyone can make a BOINC project. If crunching competition becomes insane or CPU/GPU projects are ported to GPU/FPGA/etc then a new project could be spun up just for CPUs or sensors.
<Erkan_Yilmaz> in the future perhaps :-) when I heard some days/weeks ago about the cheating possibility, Gridcoin fell a little in my darling-list :-(
<customminer> Meh, kick the vulnerable project out of the whitelist & focus on the secure projects. Project admins will take notice as computing power moves away.
<customminer> The more popular Gridcoin becomes, the more indivuals there will be to brainstorm a 4th gen credit system with & potentially developers will take notice. It's still early days & BOINC is going nowhere.
<Gunde> Not easy to cheat to regular project, BOINC handle it fine for those.
<Gunde> What BOINC does for those who try to trick benchmark test is that boinc reset this after some time. This was a big issue in the past and the system today do solve this today. But for some project they use another type to reward credits.
brewsmithy has joined #gridcoin
<NeuralMiner> you can stop the benchmark from running though.
<Gunde> So the old system is more vulnerable even if creditsystem protect this by reset stats and reward by cputime/runtime.
Newtronic has joined #gridcoin
<Gunde> Yea but that would only work in short time
<NeuralMiner> the newest system, creditnew, still has its issues.
AJG has joined #gridcoin
brewsmithy has quit [Client Quit]
<NeuralMiner> rewarding by cpu/runtime is still one of the easiest ways to cheat though. wingman WUs are close, but there's still ways to cheat that as well, but it's definitely not as easy.
<Gunde> Yea runtime has no value, just add more cores and let them run with low frekvens. Would need real work reward i think and flush that benchmark from boinc. Would need all project to get together to handle this and
<Gunde> old project should need to change this
<Gunde> As it is now every project add there own algoritm to calc the credit so some might be easier then others.
<NeuralMiner> the problem is projects that cant estimate how long a WU should take and how much credit it should be worth. like calculating NFS square root. i dont know of a good way of locking that down.
<NeuralMiner> i agree every project should use the same algo. problem is things like bitcoin utopia throw it way off.
<Gunde> Yes NFS and those are hard to solve.
<Erkan_Yilmaz> well, if the Gridocin users find a "flaw" at soem BOINC project with the calc it should be downgraded
<NeuralMiner> issue is i havent heard of a better system yet. everyone knows this one is flawed, but what would be better? that's the issue.
<customminer> Alternatively what about better benchmark mechanisms? That plus obfuscating work unit identities to prevent wingmanning could be a good first step towards a 4th gen credit system?
<Gunde> WE might end to 5 project but if that need to keep gridcoin running then fine for me.
<customminer> Sure you can crunch the majority of wu's to wingman without worrying about wu id's, but if you're cheating on that scale surely the admin will notice?
<NeuralMiner> customminer, it's not so much HOW the benchmarks are done; they're definitely not 100%, but it's how they're reported back to the projects.
<Erkan_Yilmaz> well, from all of the above right now, I conclude making a chnage over BOINC will take at least 12 months, if it ever succeeds
<Erkan_Yilmaz> so, decreasing the whitelist is faster
<NeuralMiner> you could lock down my benchmarks so they are absolutely correct. i'll just middle man and change how they report back to BOINC.

<NeuralMiner> changing the credit system with boinc feels like an uphill battle with the squirts in your pants.
<customminer> Erkan_Yilmaz: Yeah, in the meantime as Gunde says - reducing the whitelist is a quick fix, then working with the BOINC community towards a 4th gen credit system is the long term goal. 12 months seems like a lot in the cryptocurrency scene, but BOINC has been around for a significant period of time.
<Erkan_Yilmaz> one should look also at using perhaps something else than BOINC
<Erkan_Yilmaz> somethig else which of course helps humanity
<NeuralMiner> is folding separate from boinc?
<customminer> NeuralMiner: Do you think we would have more progress/success if we began a 4th gen credit system discussion in the BOINC development mailing lists? David anderson has yet to post in that thread.
<Gunde> Yes
<customminer> NeuralMiner: Or at least pointing out the thread to the devs via the mailinglists..
<NeuralMiner> customminer, that might be a good idea. the forum was completely sidetrack by that bag of dicks.
<Gunde> Folding@HOme was in BOINC but separated after som time to make there own application
<Gunde> But Folding@Home do have a "bonus" system that wors then boinc credit system.
<NeuralMiner> somewhere in the git there's notes for the next credit system. i'll have to find it again.
<customminer> NeuralMiner: It doesn't help that the forum is a nightmare to navigate, it's an absolute wall of text. Reddit is far easier to navigate & continue specific conversation chains without dicks interrupting the stream of conversation.
<Gunde> Fast card could get x5 of what it could get for real work done.
<NeuralMiner> just thinking of that thread makes my ass crack sweat. so pissed.
<customminer> NeuralMiner: Relax bro, my post whooped his ass ;D
<NeuralMiner> absolutely. but his mission was successful; derail the credit convo.
<customminer> yeah, successful subversion..
<NeuralMiner> the boinc subreddit looks kinda... dead as well.
<customminer> indeed

RTW93 has quit [Ping timeout: 258 seconds]
<apc> hmm in neural network it shows mag 3.75, and doing list explainmagnitude in debug gives me 5.4
<apc> it also only shows 1 project
<apc> I'm in 2
<apc> list cpids shows both tho
<customminer> I think explainmagnitude is depreciated
<Gunde> might take some time before it will be added, and got minimum rac
<customminer> if hte neuralnetwork shows both it's fine
<customminer> the*
<Gunde> show 3 project for me
<Gunde> Primegrid rosetta and pogs
<apc> I'm active on pogs and poem
<apc> neuralnetwork only shows pogs in the list, but also rosetta in the body
<Gunde> wait it out until poem has been added.
<apc> I'm on rosetta but not active, tho I think bam snuck it onto one of my devices this morning
<apc> hmm oki doki
<apc> just glad it's not zero anymore. means everything's set up right
<Gunde> yea we don´t like zero.
