<diginet_> Sync__: do you think it would be possible to construct a vacuum chamber out of a steel cooking pot (304 or 316 stainless)
<diginet_> the problem is the window, I don't know how to weld, and even if I did, welding for vacuum applications seems hard
<diginet_> on the other hand, I don't want glass because of implosions/fouling

<Sync__> it is certainly possible to use a pot
<Sync__> but you will need to solder or braze stuff to it
<Sync__> I'd use beer keg
<Sync__> they are cheap and a lot thicker than a pot
<Sync__> and you know that it is proper stainless
<diginet_> hmm, that sounds like a good idea
<Sync__> the deposit is like 25€ here
<diginet_> for a beer keg? what do you mean by deposit?
<Sync__> well, if you get a keg you pay for the beer and for the keg itself
<Sync__> and if you give the keg back you get the deposit back
<Sync__> so that you don't throw it away
<diginet_> ohhhhhh, I'm too young to buy actual beer :P
<diginet_> can you buy empty kegs?
<diginet_> also, do you know anything about welding for vacuum applications?
<Sync__> yeah you can buy empty ones
<Sync__> yes I've done a bit of welding on vacuum apparatus
<diginet_> is it hard? I mean, is it something an amateur could learn?
<Sync__> I'm just an amateur, too, it just depends on how much time you spend trying it
<Sync__> welding is not something where you'd need a special skill it is something you learn with doing
<diginet_> I see, well that's hopeful.
<Sync__> but you will need a tig welding machine

<soul-d> wich means your stuck with gas tig machiene 500$ ? new gas canister 200$ lots of steel to practice probably takes around 1k to get started with tig also would refute it takes no special skill if you need to practice (it takes perhaps no prequisites) , but your not gonna weld something well for a while it's probably cheaper to get some one qualified to weld
<soul-d> for the rest sync is right it depends how much time and money you spend
<soul-d> forgot the saftey gear another 200$
<Sync__> gas is cheap
<Sync__> like under 50$ per fillng
<soul-d> the canister is not
<soul-d> you might get one cheap
<Sync__> bit it is yours, you only pay it once
<Sync__> ~but
<soul-d> true if your building a workshop anyhow
<soul-d> but if you have to make something that is stable with a decent vacume id probably not weld that out of the blue
<Sync__> in the end doing vacuum work and experimenting with it you'll need your own shop at some point
<Sync__> but I didn't really have had issues with tig welding, was making leak tight welds after 2-3 weeks practice with some scrap
<soul-d> yeah but assuming not legal drinking age also the wage if any hard problem but that said young enough to learn anything you set mind to
<diginet> i'm 20 :)
<Sync__> then you are plenty old enough to buy beer
<diginet> not in the US, and anyway I don't drink
<berndj> have you guys seen that video of the imploding oil barrel?
<berndj> i'm assuming a beer keg is also a log bigger than a pot
<Sync__> a beer keg is a lot stronger than an oilbarrel
<Sync__> because it actually is a pressure vessel
<berndj> good point
<Sync__> I tried it on a 30l keg and it works just fine
<soul-d> ah you meant one of those bar things
<berndj> you put a vacuum in it?
<Sync__> yes
<soul-d> i was thinking of a typical german hand hold keg
<soul-d> :>
<berndj> cool
<Sync__> you mean a humpen?
<Sync__> or a maß?
<Sync__> but no, the regular 30l stainless kegs do fine
<berndj> how are the ends attached - welded?
<Sync__> yes
<berndj> then it sounds ideal!
<Sync__> ... which is why I used it
<berndj> how do you open it and put stuff inside?
<berndj> (stuff that isn't beer)
<Sync__> by welding in a port
<berndj> quite a big port, or what are you putting inside?
<berndj> at some point i want to coat telescope mirrors
<Sync__> should be easy enough
<Sync__> meh, I should lurk less and ride my motorcycle
<berndj> so i'd imagine having to cut a keg in half and put a flange on each half
<Sync__> if you want to split it completely yes
<Sync__> I'd just weld a K250 flange into one end
