<dack> my gk802 seems to intermittently not boot. here's what I get on the serial console when it doesn't boot: http://pastebin.com/KumM3wyJ

<dack> I re-powered the device and it looks like it nearly finished booting but I get nothing on the HDMI: http://pastebin.com/t7i8HHpj

<dack> I'm planning on using the gk802 in a production environment and I really need to it to reliably boot up everytime. Right now it boots properly only about 20% of the time. Anyone have any ideas?

<hste> dack: what power adapter are u using, and have u connected sth with usb?
<dack> hste: I'm using the adapter that came with it... 2000mA 5V
<dack> hste: I have a keyboard connected via usb. but I've had the same problem with it disconnected too
<hste> have u tried different sdcards?
<dack> hste: unfortunately I just have the one available... I've reformatted the ext4 partition and dd'ed the uboot back on a few times too.
<dack> hste: it does start up part of the time.. it doesn't make any sense why it occassionally fails to start (either by not finding the partition or freezing right near the end)
<dack> hste: is freezing when usb devices are connected a known issue?
<hste> try make the mkubuntu script and choose usb to put an image on that one if u have a usbdongle to test on
<hste> Do you have another hdmi monitor to test output with?
<dack> hste: I don't think it's an issue with the card, though, as the image from http://jas-hacks.blogspot.ca/2013/03/gk802-ubuntu-oneiric-preview-image_10.html runs consistently (or at least did before I reformatted it with the 'latest')
<dack> hste: I have the dongle connected to the monitor via HDMI and the serial console connected too. When it freezes near the end, the screen remains on as if there's a signal but nothing is displayed
<dack> hste: I seem to be able to download that xubuntu 13.04 image now, so I'll try that out...
<hste> yes others have had thet problem. sth another monitor gives output. It has problem to get edid from some monitors
<dack> hste: is that problem intermittent like this? I do occassionally get it to start up and display correctly.
<dack> hste: serial console says "mxc_hdmi mxc_hdmi: No modes read from edid"

<dack> jas-hacks_: in http://jas-hacks.blogspot.ca/2013/10/imx6-ubuntu-1304-with-gpu-acceleration.html what kernel is being used? It doesn't look like there's an uImage in the tar.
<jas-hacks_> dack: I think hste should have 4.1.0 kernel for it
<dack> jas-hacks_: did you build it from the freescale repo or somewhere else?
<obinou> hste: hello : Does your xbmc image http://stende.no-ip.info/files/xbmc/mkxbmc.sh uses the latest kernels ? And does it come with support of the GPU decoder and with the temperature control ?
<obinou> hste: I burnt a first GK802 using a version of xbmc

<obinou> (a few month ago)
<obinou> the case become very hot, much more than with android, and suddently all went black & the gk never restarted since.
<obinou> so now I become a bit suspicious :-)
<hste> obinou: yes it has the latest kernel, but get hot so fast that u should have a heatsink on it
<obinou> hste: mhhh ok
<obinou> thanks for the warning
<hste> but anatop is on it
<obinou> cool ! (If I may say that)
<hste> I run it without the case
<obinou> anatop mean no acceleration for video, right ?
<hste> no its the freq scaler for turning the temp into safe values
<obinou> ahhh ok
<obinou> I 've been confused, thanks
<obinou> well time to try, then
<obinou> thanks to you and all guys who work on that , even if I have a bit of difficulty to follow everything
<obinou> (btw, I'm waiting for the Cubox-i shipment, I hope they've look after the thermal problem)
<hste> Yes they do :)
<hste> You can follow some progress on #cubox
<obinou> hste: cool ! I did not knew that #cubox
<hste> And you can follow some xbmc progress here http://stephan-rafin.net/blog/2013/11/08/new-xbmc-yocto-image/
<obinou> a bit premature , I did not get them yet
<obinou> I received my Udoo however
<obinou> wow , lots of info tonight
<obinou> I knew I had to talk here sometime :-)
<obinou> (I'm working with Openembedded at work on imx6 , so I already have all the yocto stuff)
<hste> There isn't much dev on gk802 more. But as we have a 4.1.0 kerneltree we can use much of other imx6 work like rootfs.
<jas-hacks_> obinou: I created a udoo 4.1.0 kernel (helping the guys on the udoo channel)
<obinou> \o/ wonderful
<hste> jas-hacks_: I saw carlos made a yocto reciepe on gstreamer :)
<jas-hacks_> hste: can you test it?
<obinou> I wonder , are the kernels between the multiple hardware so different (I got a Sabre Lite, a udoo, 2 GK802, and the cubox-i, without counting the card at work ) ?
<hste> yes, I'll try it but not today... :)
<obinou> also , jas-hacks_wen you talk about 4.1.0 , you are talking about freescale's versionning ? Why is that we can't use mainline kernel ?
<jas-hacks_> obinou: 4.1.0 is freescale version. You can use mainline however the GPU/VPU doesn't get included
<jas-hacks_> unless someone tries to merge it and get it working
<jas-hacks_> obinou: which boards are better?
<obinou> ok
<obinou> I start to understand the versionning & problems
<obinou> better... well , they all are different
<jas-hacks_> there are alpha 3.5 and 3.10 kernel from fsl
<obinou> the sabre lite are my first ones , a bit weak on the SATA connector
<obinou> udoo is the most versatile, while gk802 and udoo are purely mediacenters
<obinou> jas-hacks_: i'll check this 3.10 kernel
<dack> hste: okay, I found an sdcard I can use to try again. how much free space should I leave at the beginning of the card for uboot?
<WarheadsSE> ~ 1M is sane
<WarheadsSE> also usually a clean multiple of block size
<dack> k.. sane is good. ;)

<dack> possibly a dumb question... why is there no arm-linux-gnueabihf-gcc in the apt repository for ubuntu 13.04 on the gk802?
<dack> nvm.. I installed build-essential and I appear to have it now
