<npfoss[m]> postables: I'm not sure if Ethereum uses that curve but they do use ECC instead of RSA I think. I was asking because it's the libsodium default (which is what I'm using for crypto stuff) and because they're much shorter, which is convenient for putting public keys in URLs
<npfoss[m]> olizilla: darn, thank you for looking into that. from your links I was able to find this: https://github.com/libp2p/js-libp2p-crypto#cryptokeys which confirms
<npfoss[m]> > ed25519 keys support only signing and verification of messages. For encryption / decryption support, RSA keys should be used

<npfoss[m]> though that is a valid use case, it's not the main point of IPFS, and being thrown in the "mostly for pirating movies" bucket like bittorret can be harmful. for example, many Comcast routers in the US throttle traffic from IPFS nodes because it looks like bittorrent traffic, and comcast, being the owner and provider of much of the cable TV content being pirated, hates bittorrent
<npfoss[m]> [I'm not affiliated with the IPFS team at all, I just use it and want it to succeed]
Smilex has joined #ipfs
<Swedneck2> well put, IPFS should be seen like HTTP, not like bittorrent
thomasanderson has joined #ipfs

<KateMossFan4[m]> can isp's "throttling traffic" be bypassed somehow, for ex. with a vpn? also, will a user get banned from this room if they post too much illegal links? thanks for that well put reply.
<Swedneck2> eh i don't think anyone will ban for one link, but if people keep posting pirated content they probably will be banned
<KateMossFan4[m]> oh it sucks hard, but thanks for a reply.
clemo has joined #ipfs
<npfoss[m]> I haven't figured out a way around the throttling yet for desktop, but I haven't tried very hard because I'm working mostly with js-ipfs anyways and peer discovery from the browser isn't good enough yet for the amount of traffic to be very high lol. it's basically just using the gateways. But if you wanted to, you could probably run an IPFS node (or bittorrent) on a AWS/GCP instance and use that as your personal gateway, which
<npfoss[m]> would make it look a lot less like a p2p app since the comcast router just sees you streaming data from that one cloud server rather than having lots of connections open all at once
<npfoss[m]> I'm sure the bittorrent people have thought about this more than me though, there are likely workarounds out there
<KateMossFan4[m]> understood, thanks.

<dynodetk[m]> piracy is not only inevitable, but as you'll all come to understand eventually, a saving grace
thomasanderson has joined #ipfs
<dynodetk[m]> you can moderate this room, but you can't moderate what catches on
<KateMossFan4[m]> idk i'm in a country that just doesn't give a shit about piracy so i don't care, if this room has different rules / unwritten rules - i respect that.
thomasanderson has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<dynodetk[m]> i'm saying that trying to escape the "stigma" of piracy is fruitless
<Swedneck_> we're not here to debate the merits of piracy, the fact is that if we allow IPFS to be heavily linked with piracy it will suffer in mainstream adoption
<Swedneck_> you people are absolutely 100% free to create your own rooms for discussing IPFS piracy
<Swedneck_> just don't do it in here
<dynodetk[m]> i never intended to
<dynodetk[m]> but eventually, the two will be (effectively) inseparable concepts, as with bittorrent
<KateMossFan4[m]> you assume that the "mainstream" is against piracy, which is not a fact, but whatever, I don't want to argue.
