<denzuko[m]1> once an upload is pinned, is there a time limit to how long a node needs to be on the network before it can shutdown or does it always need to be available?
<aschmahmann[m]> denzuko: what's the bad thing you're trying to prevent from happening by keeping the node on the network? Pinning data basically means that your local node will keep the data indefinitely. However, if your node is the only one on the network with a copy of the data and it goes offline where will other users be able to get the data from?

<denzuko[m]1> Of course. the use case I am trying to solve is releasing vuejs apps and general sites via a cicd pipeline. So the implementation is a node spins up temporary then adds the upload, updates the dnslink values as needed then as the job ends goes offline.

<aschmahmann[m]> denzuko: If your CD node is the only one with a copy of the latest release then shutting down the node will cause the website to go away.
<aschmahmann[m]> However, if you can ensure some other node has pinned the data (say not your CD system, but a separate pinning node), you could safely let the CD system close its node once your pinning node pins the data.

<lyttlerock> hey everyone, had a question about creating a static hash on IPFS that I could use a single entry point for users while managing the link to the dynamic hashes in the background myself. I think I need to use IPNS for this, but I'm kinda confused about what "republishing" means in the context of IPNS. It sounds like the IPNS link is only alive for 2
<lyttlerock> 4 hours and then needs to be recreated, which I assume creates a new hash?

<Swedneck2> no, an IPNS address is always the same
<Swedneck2> think of it like how DNS only updates records every X minutes
<Swedneck2> but the go-ipfs daemon (not sure about js-ipfs) handles that for you, at least that's what i've been told
<lyttlerock> oh cool, so I don't have to worry about republishing as long as the daemon is running?

<lyttlerock> Just ran a quick test - published a file got hash X, changed the underlying file and republished and got the same hash X. That's awesome and the behavior I expected (wanted). I'm kinda curious how that works under the hood though. Does everyone just get one IPNS name space, or is there some black magic going on to create the same IPNS hash for the
<lyttlerock> "same" file even though the contents changed?
sfx2496 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<Swedneck2> it uses keys
<Swedneck2> i'm not entirely sure about the specifics, but something about public/private keys and using the private key to publish new values i think?
sfx2496 has joined #ipfs
<Swedneck2> you can make a new ipns key with `ipfs key gen -t rsa <name>`, the name just being a label for the key
aarshkshah1992 has quit [Ping timeout: 244 seconds]
<Swedneck2> to publish a value to a specific key, use `ipfs name publish -k <key-name> <value>`
<Swedneck2> without `-k` it just uses your node's default key, the same you get from `ipfs id`
salvador has joined #ipfs
<postables[m]2> You use the private key to create a signature which is used to verify the record, and the name/hash of the record is the hash of the public key that pairs up with the private key that was used for the signature

<swedneck> god i can't wait for IPNS (and just ipfs in general) to be faster
<postables[m]2> When you invoke `ipfs daemon --enable-namesys-pubsub` you're enabling the pubsub router.
<postables[m]2> swedneck: fast IPNS will be an absolute game changer
<swedneck> totally
<postables[m]2> Fast IPNS == absolutely no reason not to use IPFS for everything lol

<Rumblestiltskin[> swedneck:permaweb.io: postables Is there a close to complete version where IPNS is faster?
<aschmahmann[m]> Rumblestiltskin: follow this PR for IPNS over PubSub as an independent transport which should be much faster. https://github.com/ipfs/go-ipfs/issues/6447
<swedneck> all i know about is `ipfs daemon --enable-namesys-pubsub` as postables said
<swedneck> which iirc makes it a bit faster
<Rumblestiltskin[> thanks I iwll try that
<aschmahmann[m]> current (merged and released) IPNS PubSub is much faster when receiving updates but almost exactly as slow when initially resolving a record. That set of PRs allows the first resolve to be much faster.
<aschmahmann[m]> Note that the PRs are still being worked on, but I've run demos pretty succesfully from them.
<aschmahmann[m]> there's also some functional work on IPNS over DNS (https://github.com/ipfs/js-ipfs/issues/2000) that's being worked on in both JS and Go. Note that this is distinct/different from DNSLink in that users don't need to actually control a hostname to use it.
<Rumblestiltskin[> thanks. I have some reading to do to understand it all
<aschmahmann[m]> sure, feel free to reach out if you have any questions
