<JankLoogi> How would you go about bootstrapping a IPFS node in an offline environment? I'd like to play around with IPFS, but my Uni has a strict no torrenting policy
Acacia has joined #ipfs
<aschmahmann[m]> If your offline environment has MDNS supported then things should "just work" without requiring any bootstrapping. Just make sure you have MDNS enabled in your config
<JankLoogi> Hmm, last time I tried launching the ipfs daemon, it failed claiming it needed to bootstrap. Good to know that's not necessary, I'll look into it more

<JCaesar> jankloogi: Actually quite the opposite. You'll need to disable the preconfigured bootstrap nodes, otherwise it will connect to the global swarm and make you look like a torrenter.
<JCaesar> (But... just get a VPN or a cheap/temporarily free for students VPS as a VPN server...)
<JankLoogi> I'll be blocking IPFS at a firewall level, so it will just fail if I start the daemon
<JankLoogi> What do the default bootstrap nodes do?
<JankLoogi> Actually my Uni has sort of a sysadmin lab full of old server hardware and I specifically want to utilize that

<aschmahmann[m]> > What do the default bootstrap nodes do?
<aschmahmann[m]> In order to ask the DHT you need to find some peers who are members of it, the default bootstrap nodes just happen to be peers who are members of the DHT that are always on in order to help the network. However, the DHT has tons of members (i.e. by default every publicly reachable IPFS node) so you could choose any peer you felt was stable and that would be sufficient.
<aschmahmann[m]> In order to find data on the network you need to be able to ask some system "who has the data represented by CID bafyabc". IPFS will ask peers you're already connected to if they happen to have the data, but it will by default also ask a DHT (distributed hash table) if it knows who has bafyabc.
<aschmahmann[m]> If you're just running locally then having access to the public DHT isn't really useful to you and you'll have to decide how you want to discover data (e.g use MDNS to connect to everyone on your LAN or choose a set of nodes to bootstrap off of for your local network)

<rvklein[m]> The IPFS command line util is a bit daunting/confusing even though I've managed to use it and publish with it. I don't really blame it, as it's doing a buncha complex stuff. It's daunting to learn how to best make use of the utils in the CLI for ipfs because there's a lot to it. It's not impossible to get a workflow for basic stuff going with the utils though. But I have to know what is doing what, which isn't always clear.

<rvklein[m]> This doesn't really seem to do a whole lot though.
<aschmahmann[m]> > any way to add data directly from ftp
<aschmahmann[m]> I'm not really familiar with how the URLStore works, but you might want to check that out
<rvklein[m]> Is this a tray icon that controls the ipfs daemon process?
<rvklein[m]> Because that is what it looks like.
<rvklein[m]> I don't see anything in here which really seems to indicate that this helps with the workflow of the process of actually publishing things and having them pinned. IDK
<swedneck> It's a bit more than a tray icon :P
