Was there any kind of survey done around what do people use ipfs for these days? I see some research posts around other topics, but not this

There's some use cases on ipfs.io, right? (Personally, I keep my arch linuxes up to date. An odd mix of a local mirror and cache, if you will.)

I was curious about the current usage in the wild, rather than the theoretical cases (I'm aware of those)

viraptor1: You could do what ipfs-search does and listen to the dht chatter, collect a cross section of current use, and try to figure out what kind of files are flying around.

"ˈt͡sɛːzaɐ̯" (https://matrix.to/#/@julius:mtx.liftm.de): awesome, thank you very much, that's exactly what I was after.
<viraptor[m]>
By theoretical I meant that I've found lots of posts regarding what ipfs can be used for / was designed for / is planning to do, rather than current applications.

planning on hosting a image gallery that will get updated every now and then. It won't havy lot of activity (viewers). Thinking maybe I could even try it on ipfs this time. I have a domain I could use. I have a vps but it has only 128MB ram. This is where I would host it on a web server if I would host it on web server. I searched about the mininum system reqs and couple years ago 512MB ram vps seemed to be
<onla>
sufficient but barely. I guess 128MB is still too little?
<onla>
for ipfs hosting
<onla>
also I only quickly checked about the ipns and dnslink. Not sure how I could incorporate my domain to it
<swedneck>
shouldn't be any harm in trying
<swedneck>
can't know for sure if it works unless you try!
<swedneck>
the way i do it is to put nginx/apache in front and reverse-proxy the domains to the ipfs port
<swedneck>
and then use CNAME/A records on the subdomains and add _dnslink.subdomain.tld TXT records so ipfs knows what to serve
<bqv>
i have an issue, where ipfs hangs every time i call it with a nontrivial operation
<bqv>
not sure what's causing it, or even how to debug

hmph
<bqv>
fixed it by running ipfs init
<bqv>
but that also nuked my credentials

goddammit
<onla>
I didn't 100% understand swedneck, but hmm maybe I can find some tutorials online
<onla>
maybe I'll try
