We're going to be dropping support for SECIO later this month in IPFS and libp2p, if you're not on go-ipfs 0.5+ or js-ipfs 0.47+ please upgrade soon or you'll start to experience failures when we upgrade the public infrastructure. https://blog.ipfs.io/2020-08-07-deprecating-secio/
<apotheon>
Great. I guess my IPFS instance will stop working unless I uninstall the package and build it myself, then.

<swedneck>
is there not a binary for your platform?
<swedneck>
what's your platform?
<apotheon>
swedneck: Yeah, it looks like it, but now I have to save any config and data, uninstall the package, add the binary, restore any config and data, then . . . live with no updates that I don't copy into place myself, rather than using the package manager.

OpenBSD
<apotheon>
I don't even know yet what I need to save so I don't lose everything I've already added to IPFS.
<apotheon>
This'll be fun.
<apotheon>
. . . or just discouraging enough that I give up on IPFS for now.
<apotheon>
I have had too many sysadmin-task days lately to want to screw around with any more right now.
<aschmahmann[m]>
apotheon Not familiar enough with OpenBSD and it's package manager, but would it really delete data in your .ipfs directory? That seems like pretty odd behavior.

* apotheon Not familiar enough with OpenBSD and its package manager, but would it really delete data in your .ipfs directory? That seems like pretty odd behavior.
<apotheon>
aschmahmann[m]: Maybe not.
<apotheon>
aschmahmann[m]: . . . but I'd still have to make sure to put it where I need it for the binary download.
<apotheon>
. . . wherever that is.
<apotheon>
hmm
<apotheon>
actually
<apotheon>
It looks like OpenBSD should have 0.6.0, but for some reason pkg_add -u isn't picking that up.
<apotheon>
Oh, 0.6.0 is the port, not the package.
<apotheon>
ugh
<aschmahmann[m]>
Where the repo lives is independent of where the binary lives anyway. You can always set IPFS_PATH to be wherever you want
<aschmahmann[m]>
I'm not sure I understand this, can you explain what you're concerned about?
<aschmahmann[m]>
> aschmahmann: . . . but I'd still have to make sure to put it where I need it for the binary download.
<apotheon>
aschmahmann[m]: I'm not going to clutter up filesystems meant to be changed by package management tools, so I'd have to put it in something like ~/bin instead of somewhere in a system bin directory, and I wouldn't then want it screwing around with making changes to system data directories (wherever the system go-ipfs stores its data) because then I have to make sure permissions stuff won't get
<apotheon>
hosed, so if the ipfs data is in /var or /usr somewhere I'd need to copy it out, and so on.
<apotheon>
The upshot is that I don't know *what* I need to know to not break everything.
<apotheon>
. . . so I get to embark on a two-day odyssey of reading documentation and port makefiles to make sure I know what's happening and how to ensure I get things switched over smoothly, and *then* I still have the problem of now having to be the package manager for my one-off IPFS install.
<apotheon>
I'm not the type to want to just "move fast and break things", because if it's broken I just lost everything I already did.
<apotheon>
I was thinking of hunting down where IPFS is sticking data, but instead I've been explaining why I need to hunt it down, and now I have to go do other things, so I guess that's on hold.

All of IPFS's data is in the ~/.ipfs directory unless you have an environment variable (or maybe CLI argument) that says otherwise.
