aschmahmann[m]: Sorry I just realized you sent me a long message besides the ipns link (which didn't work for me so I gave up).
<aschmahmann[m]>
tedious: I can republish it, but that node isn't up right now so the data isn't available (it was just some bogus unique data)

Oh hahaha. :)
<tedious>
Sounds like my idea of publishing something real quick then shutting down the laptop isn't a great idea then. :)
<aschmahmann[m]>
nope, someone's gotta be storing the data and making it available to download

Right. But you said that ipns keys can't be pinned yet so I'd have to be back online every few hours to refresh the dht record correct?
<tedious>
Your later conversation with kallisti5[m] is encouraging that maybe this will be a piece of cake eventually.
<tedious>
But in the meantime I guess I can just make sure at least one server pins all the static content.

Hmm but now I have an unrelated newbie question about servers.
<tedious>
Would a cheap vps like a 1GB droplet with 500GB per month make a good dht server node?

<aschmahmann[m]>
If you gave one server pinning static content anyhow then if you enable IPNS over PubSub your IPNS records will probably be fine as long as you're online every day and you make sure to run `ipfs name resolve /ipns/yourKey` on the servers any time the daemon restarts. (The every day restriction is a function of https://github.com/ipfs/go-ipfs/issues/7537 which should be fixed either in 0.7 or the following release)
<aschmahmann[m]>
Not really sure if that would be a good server, I think the rule of thumb would be 1) does it have good network connectivity + reasonable bandwidth (droplets should be fine here) 2) Are you not maxing out any resource on your machine (e.g. CPU, RAM, Disk space, Disk Read/Write speed, etc.). If the answer to both questions is yes then you should only be helping the network.

<JCaesar>
tedious: I've had some trouble with 1GB RAM. Ended up adding a 4GB swap file, that solved it somehow (some badgerds compaction that went crazy). Also, my node is sitting somewhere at 100kB/s, both up and down, so 500GB is also tight...
