Curious performance question: Is it faster to access MFS via /ipfs/CID or is a published /ipns/PeerID just as fast? I'm primarily interested in gateway access to the files.

ipns lookups are really slow. I don't get how MFS sigures in that though? It's just a virtual filesystem for your convenience

<ldeffenb_>
@voker57 I'm adding files to ipfs and copying them into the MFS and then publishing the final hash via ipns and my peer ID so that the gateway address to the root of my MFS is a constant for the latest MFS update.
<voker57>
ic. so, yeah, ipns is slower but lets you have an updateable address
<ldeffenb_>
But I'm not using a browser to access these files but am doing it from a program. So I can either continue using the /ipns/PeerID/path/to/file or translate the ipns/PeerID to the root CID and go for /ipfs/CID/path/to/file from then on,
<ldeffenb_>
My suspicion was that the latter (/ipfs/CID) is faster since the /ipns/PeerID would not need to be translated first. Especially if ipns translations are "slow".
<voker57>
yeah, unless IPFS caches IPNS lookups

<ldeffenb_>
True, but there can be a substantial length of time between file accesses, but it's not imperative that I have the latest translation, so it seems caching the CID might be a good move. And periodically retranslate the ipns just to pick up the latest after that.
<ldeffenb_>
The *.txt files in the root are there because the gateway doesn't seem to have an easy way to traverse a directory tree. The API does, but there doesn't seem to be a way to get a machine-readable directory listing from a non-API-supporting gateway, just HTML-ized directory listings.
