<vagrantc> beeble: i guess this would've been a better channel for the puma-rk3399 status update :)
<beeble> :)
<beeble> great work
<vagrantc> boots fine with the vendor-supplied u-boot, too, apparently :)
<beeble> for the atf stuff, as said yesterday. we will have look at it anyways and see how we can get it as mainline as possible. it's our goal to have it upstream, but will take a while
<beeble> cool
<beeble> otherwise i could have patched that one for now
<vagrantc> i must say, this is a very nice board.
<beeble> getting stuff into u-boot is a lot easier if you have commit permissions :)
<vagrantc> all the ports clearly labeled, a readable and accurate manual, and hardware switches for selecting boot options and such
<beeble> have to add sections to the manual about mainline support. but docs...
<vagrantc> haven't tried the usb power reset/boot selection feature yet, but that sounds like something i've wanted on nearly every board i've ever worked with :)
<beeble> we have it in use in production in our lava setup
<vagrantc> the serial console even has a unique serial number :)
<vagrantc> one thing, which i've also seen on the firefly-rk3399 is that the A72 cores aren't supported by cpu frequency scaling ... so ironically, they run very slow compared to the A53 cores, which do support cpufreq
<vagrantc> i think all the CPUs boot at some very slow default speed
<vagrantc> a summary of my installation at https://bugs.debian.org/892405
<vagrantc> not sure if u-boot could change the speed on the CPUs to something faster
<beeble> there is a patch for a72 init, but thats not mainline yet as we still have discussion on how to do that in a proper way
<beeble> but cpufreq should kick in later during the kernel boot
<beeble> but let me check
<vagrantc> the a72 initilizes, but cpufreq is unsupported ... and any process running on them runs *slowly* ... that's with 4.14.x or 4.15.x
<vagrantc> at least, if cpufreq-info is giving me accurate information
<vagrantc> ah, i see, u-boot doesn't initialize them
<beeble> current CPU frequency is 1.80 GHz (asserted by call to hardware).
<beeble> on 4.16.0-rc3-00222-g2d750b88b5f0
<beeble> but let me check -stable
<vagrantc> haven't tried 4.16 yet
<beeble> it should work with older too. since i have tested the opps
<beeble> but let me check, maybe your .config is missing something
<vagrantc> indeed, just using the config from debian
<vagrantc> # CONFIG_ARM_RK3399_DMC_DEVFREQ is not set
<vagrantc> ??
<beeble> building
<mmind00> vagrantc: maybe just look for the FAN53555 driver in your config?
<beeble> and do you have dmesg for me?
<vagrantc> mmind00: # CONFIG_REGULATOR_FAN53555 is not set
<vagrantc> beeble: fetching
<mmind00> vagrantc: you might want to enable that, as they supply the big cluster on both puma and firefly
<vagrantc> mmind00: thanks, will give it a try!
<beeble> and while doing config stuff you may want to enable CONFIG_ROCKCHIP_IODOMAIN too
<beeble> still not in arm64 defconfig :/
<vagrantc> hmmm... it's not even listed as not set
<beeble> you need CONFIG_POWER_AVS for it too
<vagrantc> ah, that's "not set"
<vagrantc> ok, looks like there are a few more configs to enable
<vagrantc> beeble: only see that for the a53 cores
<beeble> yeah the missing fan53555 driver is causing that error
<beeble> [ 17.300384] cpu cpu4: Failed to set regulator for cpu4: -517
<vagrantc> ok, i can add that and the avs/iodomain stuff to the kernel and if it works, i'll push it to debian's kernel
<beeble> my defconfig for 5.15.6 if you want it http://narf.at/~beeble/defconfig
* vagrantc avoids time-travel
<beeble> it's just a jump to the left
* beeble hopes he isn't the only one old enough to understand that reference
* vagrantc might be, but never quite had the right twist of fanaticism
<lurchi_> beeble: Lets do the time warp again!
<beeble> yay

<vagrantc> hrm. just kernel paniced as i was about to rsync over the new kernel :/

<vagrantc> mmind00, beeble: those updates made cpufreq work on the A72 cores :)
<vagrantc> how can i check if the AVS/IODOMAIN stuff is working?
<vagrantc> or is that all part of it
<beeble> no, thats required for pcie reset to work. but not every card needs one
<beeble> so if you hadn't any issues with that you will see no change
<vagrantc> haven't tested pcie cards
<beeble> and to verify a scope would be nice. guessing you have none you will have to trust me it's working :)
<vagrantc> heh, sure
* vagrantc will push those to Debian's kernel
<beeble> great
<beeble> even if that means i have to change the manual now :)
<vagrantc> beeble: another think in the manual is you could simplify the debootstrap instructions using qemu-debootstrap
<vagrantc> beeble: it's a small wrapper around debootstrap that does the --foreign/--second-stage dance for you
<beeble> oh didn't know that. is that something recent?
matthias_bgg has joined #linux-rockchip
<vagrantc> beeble: i think i worked on that stuff around 2011 ... so pretty recent :)
<vagrantc> 2010, guess it's old
<vagrantc> it's part of the qemu-user-static package
<beeble> must have missed it all the time when doing apt searches
<beeble> or not enough dpkg -L :)
* vagrantc did a bunch of stuff to enable qemu-user-static back in the day for exactly that sort of purpose
<beeble> i have internal scripts for that but never felt like being polished enough to make them public
<beeble> so will try it out and update the docs
<vagrantc> yeah, you'll be able to cut out probably a couple paragraphs :)
<vagrantc> and be easier to follow and get right

<hverkuil1> vagrantc: I just discovered that I had to disable the FAN53555 for my firefly-rk3399.
<vagrantc> oh.
<vagrantc> but yet, getting random hangs, sometimes kernel panic
<hverkuil1> the patch helped a lot. And with the FAN thing enabled it would just hang in the middle of the boot.
<hverkuil1> I've just discovered this, it's the first time I'm finally able to boot it.
<vagrantc> wondering how to get that fixed properly, as that should really get fixed upstream
<vagrantc> hverkuil1: thanks for the pointers... will have to take a look later
