which is very unfortunate, because the eMMC on my board is hosed

eMMC is a sad place to put a bootloader, mess it up once and it's gone

there is the almost impossible short circuit procedure

I thought that the recovery button was a hw thing, which is why I thought flashing the bootloader is safe
