those instructions only work if you've selected the built in 8188eu driver in sunxi as a module... I don't want to include that.

Many are, but with a bit of delay (hours).
okay.. so, if I do "make ARCH=arm menuconfig" on the linux-sunxi repo and make sure there's no 8188eu driver, the instruction I gave simply don't work and nothing is compiled
however, if I have 8188eu checked off to compile as a module those instructions work. The thing is, those instructions are to compile an alternative 8188eu driver. I don't want both drivers installed at once.

somehow the CONFIG_RTL8188EU option in linux-sunxi is controlling whether the external module is compiled or not

hmm.. I think it's due to something in "include/" that's saying CONFIG_RTL8188EU=n and overriding the external module's settings
