<ullbeking> aalm: this is a fantastic suggestion!! I love it. and yes, I love writing C code but I'm new to Microcontrollers. however I have recently recently received a couple of stm32f4XXX small blue breakout boards from aliexpress, so it looks like I probably already have most of the hardware I need..?
<megi> ullbeking: one of my pet peeves with uart is that idle tx state is "high", and that can cause some leakage into the IO pin on the side that's turned off, so I like to stuff TXS0108E between the uart chip and the device, which has a nice property that it prevents leakage either way
<megi> if I put turned off dongle into powered board on some dongles the TX led will turn on :)
<megi> and the other way, it can cause issues for the SoC on the board during poweron
<ullbeking> megi: I have seen small boards with these interfaces that isolate the power by using separate regions for the literal interface connection and then optical communications for the signaling
<megi> yeah, that's probably a bit over the top though
<megi> there's no need for galvanic isolation in most cases
<ullbeking> but I think that it is plausible/feasible that this phenomenon that you identified could be partly responsible for the sometimes difficulty in flashing BIOS chips etc..?
<megi> I have no experience with that
<ullbeking> megi: well... what can one do? you proposed a problem, I suggested an existing solution, and that's not good enough somehow?
<megi> I also suggested a solution :)
<megi> TXS0108E
<ullbeking> ah yeah, I am looking at the TXS0108E now. I saw the optical communication thing last night and it wasn't much more expensive than the regular version. I haven't heard of the TXS0108E before.
<megi> it's a level shifter with two voltage domains that can be turned on/off in any order
<megi> one trouble is that you need to have access to UART-VCC on the board, and some boards don't expose that, so optical solution might work better with those boards
<ullbeking> megi: by "device" above, what do you mean? I am not quite sure exactly where you re putting the voltage level shifter
<megi> though you'll still need power for the rx led on the board side
<megi> rx fototransistor, eh
<megi> device = device you connect the UART dongle to
<ullbeking> "between the uart chip and the device" so how do you get the TXS0108E in here? do you mean the UART on the device?
<ullbeking> I'm confused
<megi> Opi boards have it nice, since they have level shifter integrated, and don't need UART-VCC
<megi> dongle rx/tx <-> txs <-> device
cnxsoft has joined #linux-sunxi
<ullbeking> I know that in theory but I am having difficulty understanding how to actually implement that
<ullbeking> wait...
<megi> there's a higher and lower voltage side on TXS0108E, I usually use 5V uart and connect it to the higher voltage side, and connect the device to the lower voltage side (GND,TX,RX,VCC)
<ullbeking> megi: which side do you connect the 1.8 v side to?
<megi> IO pins on TXS are bidir
<ullbeking> ok
<megi> which is which is in the datasheet
<ullbeking> that is what I mean
<ullbeking> on the left is the UART, on the right is the dongle?
<megi> B port is higher voltage
<ullbeking> here is the information I needed:
<megi> A port is 1.2-3.6V
<ullbeking> "The VCCA pin accepts any supply voltage between 1.2 V and 3.6 V. The B port tracks the VCCB pin supply voltage. The VCCB pin accepts any supply voltage between 1.65 V and 5.5 V. Two input supply pins allows for low Voltage bidirectional translation between any of the 1.2 V, 1.8 V, 2.5 V, 3.3 V, and 5 V voltage nodes."
<ullbeking> that got me deconfused :-)
<megi> :)
<ullbeking> thank you megi
<ullbeking> this is really cool
<ullbeking> it's great to find alternative ways to solve an issue
<megi> also VccB must be higher than VccA
<aalm> oh, so that would be usable for 1.8V uart
<ullbeking> aalm: yes
<megi> yup
<megi> I use it for weird 2.8V uarts, etc
<ullbeking> aalm: that's the bit that tripped me up
<ullbeking> aalm: megi: I'm going to add these to my "serial communications compendium", which is a comprehensive description of a "kit" that allows accurate serial comms. it's becoming a very important signalling protocol for communicating with computing devices.
<megi> nice, that was my motivation to speak up :)
<ullbeking> megi: fame and riches will soon be yours :D
<megi> I'd take the riches :)
<megi> So far I only have a limited fame, two years ago I went to a dancing class, and one guy there recognized me by name and asked me if I'm that orange pi guy, haha
<ullbeking> megi: NO WAY, LOLOLOL :D
<megi> but then, dancing classes are a magnet for sitting people, like those that work with computers
<ullbeking> you are the famous orange pi guy!! that is so cool.
<ullbeking> indeed
<ullbeking> I was just tango classes with a guy at work the other day

<karlp> diego_r: you should put the bluetooth nodes in, as that's supported now...
<diego_r> karlp: in U-Boot?

<karlp> so it can be the same dts in all places surely...

<karlp> (you're gonna want to change that for the h5 version too right? they're identical otherwise?)
<diego_r> karlp: sure, but I've got to make the change work first...
<karlp> you'll need to add the rtc clock to the wifi pwr seq node too, ala https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/sunxi/linux.git/commit/?h=sunxi/dt-for-5.5&id=5878524ee09d1d798cc4a870f517ff2ec450632c
parazyd has joined #linux-sunxi
<diego_r> karlp: aah, thanks, very helpful. Does the rest look good?
<karlp> I didn't check the pins against the schematic, but yeah, once I got the clock on the pwr seq node, and actually had my buildroot _actually_ rebuild the kernel when I had made changes, it was very muhc "copy what the others have done before"
<karlp> you need to at least get to the "couldn't find firmware brcm/blah.hcd" then you nkow it's all "working" as far as the dts is concerned.
<diego_r> karlp: thanks. I'll get back to that when I can

<clementp[m]> Hi, I saw that there is a new H6 called H6 CV200 OS which is an H6 without EMAC, PCIe and CSI. Maybe it will be something like H6T / sun50iw6p2 ?? Does someone has more info on it ?
<willmore> I'm okay with it missing (broken) PCIe and (never used by me) CSI, but EMAC? I guess it needs an external GMAC then?
