<mirko>
last time i tried building kernel images (armel/armhf) for e.g. debian the right way, it really pushed me away. things appear to have changed for arm64, but not less confusing for me. Is "flash-kernel" the common way to go or is it a debian thing to interact with / place things accordingly for u-boot? it always drops me "Unsupported platform". The old trick of forcing a suffix like "-arm64" as it
<mirko>
worked for "-armel" doesn't do the job anymore
<mirko>
besides, built initramfs images are refused by uboot with "Bad Linux ARM64 Image magic!" and I've no clue what's wrong with them
<mirko>
happy about any pointers, i'm kinda lost
<mirko>
forget the latter, the image was gzipped which uboot didn't have support for

but the biggest issue i currently have is that neither with mainline master nor with megous (orange-pi-5.5 branch) my SD card is made available. The card seems to be recognised, however not provided as block device to /dev (https://pb.nanl.de/show.php?id=44898&hash=78838946)

ok, got it, axp20x-i2c support was missing
<tuxd3v>
the 4 core 1.8Ghz H6 would be a better adition..
<tuxd3v>
because of battery life..
<anarsoul>
why? you can also shut down A72 cores on rk3399
<anarsoul>
and use your 4x A53 :)
<tuxd3v>
yes but the Cortex A53 in Rk3399 and not so good as in the H6
<tuxd3v>
I beliebe
<tuxd3v>
believe
<tuxd3v>
H6 hasa pretty decent performance, for a 11" netbook
<tuxd3v>
and consumes a lot less power
<tuxd3v>
also heats up a lot ledd :)
<tuxd3v>
so its a win,win,win
<tuxd3v>
situation
<tuxd3v>
but you don't have the pcie since the way it works is not compatible
<tuxd3v>
for storage..
<tuxd3v>
ledd -> less
<tuxd3v>
I have my H6 clocked at 1.8Ghz
<anarsoul>
tuxd3v: well, you don't need to convince me
<anarsoul>
talk to pine64
<tuxd3v>
and at full throttle I just need small heatsink, and small fan
<anarsoul>
tllim is usually on IRC, but I guess he's pretty busy now with pinephone release and another PBP batch
<tuxd3v>
anarsoul, you right :)
<vagrantc>
can it support 4GB of ram?
<anarsoul>
nope
<anarsoul>
3G is max
<vagrantc>
right.
<tuxd3v>
there are some boards out there with 4GB of Ram
<tuxd3v>
like the Tanix6
<anarsoul>
but only 3G can be addressed
<tuxd3v>
even so
<anarsoul>
and yes, you have to install 4G module to be able to use 3G
<tuxd3v>
3GB of Ram in ARM space is a lot
lkcl has joined #linux-sunxi
<vagrantc>
and yet still a bit tight for use on a laptop these days
<tuxd3v>
even if the browser heats up 800MB or lets say 1GB with tons of tabs openened..
<tuxd3v>
you still have 2GB
<tuxd3v>
you can install lxde for example and have a lean netbook
<vagrantc>
well, i've used the pinebook with 2GB of ram for months at a time, and it still seems pretty limited to me
<tuxd3v>
with a lot more hours of battery life
<tuxd3v>
11" should be about battery Life..
<vagrantc>
any platform i use should be about what i need it to do :P
<tuxd3v>
if you are in a 11" laptop you can't expect performance of a 14" laptop
<tuxd3v>
nor the battery life
<tuxd3v>
in my rockpro64 I never consume more than 2GB Ram
<tuxd3v>
maybe if I start opening all apps I get there
<tuxd3v>
the browser goes around 600-800mb
<tuxd3v>
the system consumes ~400MB
* vagrantc
can easily use several gigabytes of ram without opening a web browser
<vagrantc>
and disk cache is valuable
<tuxd3v>
so 3GB of Ram is the nice spot for 11" ;)
<vagrantc>
sure would like 8-16GB :P
<tuxd3v>
I can also eat more... with a loop alocating memory, I can exaust all meory in the system, but it has no usecases for me
<vagrantc>
lucky you
<tuxd3v>
This type of machines are not made to virtuaalize OSes
<tuxd3v>
I want a 11" so its not heavy, it has lots of battery life( only possible with H6 ), and it has the necessary memory, to run a browser, a email client and all the small apps I need
<tuxd3v>
in the mean time, I suspect I would be in a paridisiac place
<tuxd3v>
with both foots in the sand/watter
<tuxd3v>
thats the ideal use case for me of a laptop of 11"
<tuxd3v>
sardines on carvon, nice firls in the beatch
<tuxd3v>
you know, quality time
<tuxd3v>
;)
<tuxd3v>
firls -> girls
<tuxd3v>
that's why I need a 11" laptop
<tuxd3v>
something you can travel with, without braking your spine off :D
<vagrantc>
yeah, primarily useful as a travel machine ... but i also build a lot of software on it
<tuxd3v>
I also build
<vagrantc>
and the occasional VM :)
<tuxd3v>
but the heavy stuff, I will not build in it
<mirko>
cross compiling for x86 :)
<tuxd3v>
yeah I suspected that you were runnings vms there
<vagrantc>
i've built kernels on my pinebook ... obviously an overnight process
<vagrantc>
also building all u-boot targets that debian supports takes a while
<tuxd3v>
O big laptop I have it fized in the Company
<tuxd3v>
I don carry that "military tank" around
<tuxd3v>
with me, only possible phone, and a laptop like 11"
<tuxd3v>
or only a f(x)tex pro1 that I am exploring the Idea
<tuxd3v>
but the f(x)tec guys already created a big sadness on me...( my keyboard is not supported on that phone.. )
<tuxd3v>
kernels, uboot and suck I crosscompile
<tuxd3v>
I launch jobs and is builds them remotly, so its not a problem for me ;)
<tuxd3v>
anarsoul, the 3GB addressable on H6, are because the first GB is were peripherals are mapped right?
