I have one more Allwinner device, a variant of T98 mini TV stick. It's the best board in terms of size:perf ratio, but it lacks UART. Would you recommend an approach to take control over U-boot from within builtin rooted Android firmware?

mmarc___: as allwinner by default boots from sd card first you may try to simply boot some tv-box ready image on it and see what happens
<mmarc___>
thanks, that's exactly what I did on a first try! I've tried to boot from an sdcard with OrangePi 3 image. However, no sense of life out there. HDMI monitor is black, though u-boot explicitly configures it.

mmarc__: maybe give the nightly libreelec tanix tx6 image a try (maybe jernej can even recommend any better one): https://test.libreelec.tv/
<jernej>
what kind of board we are talking about?
<mmarc___>
cool, I will try!
<hexdump0815>
jernel: he mentioned t98-mini, which seems to be a h6 tv box stick - for me nearly all h6 tv boxes worked well as long as the u-boot includes that ddr rank timing fix
<mmarc___>
yes, it's a T98 mini with Allwinner H6 (there are multiple variants)
<jernej>
what kind of RAM does it have? DDR3 or LPDDR3?
<mmarc___>
reportedly, DDR3
<jernej>
ok, maybe tx6 image will work, assuming it has fixed voltage regulators
<jernej>
is there a PCB image?
<hexdump0815>
jernej: did you see any h6 tv box yet without fixed regulators?
<hexdump0815>
ah - ok ... but there is an image for that there as well which might be worth a test if the tx6 one does not work ... does libreelec have that ddr timing fix in its u-boot already? (just in case)
<jernej>
ok, I see separate fixed regulators
<jernej>
so tx6 image might even work
<jernej>
hexdump0815: that fix is present for a long time (and it will be in v2021.03 release)
<hexdump0815>
jernej: perfect - i think then the chance is good that the tx6 image should simply work
<mmarc___>
thanks, I will be back with news!
<jernej>
it will enable ethernet which is a big energy sink, but it's good enough for test
