<noss> are there some short one-liners to demonstrate the capabilities of flow caml?
<noss> maybe not one liners, but a pageful.
<noss> ahh, maybe i should read the slides to the "flow caml in a nutshell" first.
<phubuh> as compared to, say, C, or another functional and somewhat sophisticated language?

<noss> well, most of it seems to be about annotated types.

<Zadeh> lus|wazze: what's the "wazze" stand for?
<lus|wazze> nothing its just my nickname
<Zadeh> ah
<lus|wazze> its the current endpoint of a development
<Zadeh> a development?
<lus|wazze> it started out as being wats which is a shortening of my real-life last name, watson
<lus|wazze> then people started calling me "watse" and this gradually then became "wazze"
<Zadeh> weird, what about the "lus" part?
<Zadeh> first name abbreviation?
<lus|wazze> its my clan
<Zadeh> gaming clan?
<lus|wazze> yep
<Zadeh> ahh
<Zadeh> how'd you get into ocaml?
<lus|wazze> i was unhappy with what programming languages i knew so i started looking for better alternatives
<lus|wazze> so i looked at several programming languages among which was ocaml, which i took a liking to
<Zadeh> which did you know then?
<lus|wazze> c, c++, pascal, logo, scheme, basic and oberon
<lus|wazze> im really into programming languages though and always in the process of learning some new ones
<Zadeh> what was wrong with scheme/logo/oberon?
<lus|wazze> currently, for instance, im learning erlang and python
<Zadeh> I always recommend python to newbies now
<lus|wazze> yep i do so as well, now
<lus|wazze> its a really nicely straight-forward language
<Zadeh> I as just messing with SWIG yesterday to import some of my C/C++ code into python modules
<Zadeh> ocaml seems about as easy to use though
<Zadeh> www.ocaml.org needs a cooler logo :)
<rhil> I like python-- having used it for about 4 years; but I like ruby a lot more these days
<rhil> makes for an excellent first language, I've found
rhil is now known as rhil|zzz
<Zadeh> how come?
<Zadeh> er, answer when you wake up ;)
rhil|zzz is now known as rhil
<rhil> ok, still here :)
<rhil> why do I prefer ruby, or why do I think it's better suited for teaching?
<rhil> well, maybe that's the same answer... I'm a big believer in the idea that if you're going to use a paradigm, you might as well use it consistently and idiomatically
<rhil> ruby is far more consistent in terms of it's OO support; I've never heard any strong denials of that before
<rhil> but, of course, what language someone uses is usually just a matter of taste
<rhil> python is very good for teaching-- that's definitely something that's been shown over the years.
<rhil> the problem w/ python is the fact that iterators and a subclassing of core objects is still relatively new, so the vast majority of scripts out there don't make full use of python's new OO capabilities
<rhil> anyhow-- I'm falling over here; definitely happy to continue this conversation sometime in the future ;)
