<lms> hey, I'm about to go to bed, but I wanted to ask if anyone knew of a tutorial to get ocaml set up with mingw, etc, to create executables?
<lms> anyway, thanks, I'll read the logs if anyone has an answer, I really apprecaite it! :)

<bostik> hi all !
<Demitar> Hello bostik.
<bostik> i'm evaluating the possibility to develop the cm system in ocaml !
<bostik> i'm evaluating the possibility to develop the prelude-cm system in ocaml !
<Demitar> cm?
<drworm> content management
<Demitar> Is there an existing implementation or just a design document?
<bostik> is ocaml slower then c??
<Maddas> Probably. Why does it matter?
<Demitar> bostik, it's probably the wrong question. :)
<Maddas> CM systems usually don't care too much about performance.
<bostik> yes
<bostik> but in ids environment yes
<teratorn> *sigh*
<Demitar> ids?
<Maddas> ids environment?
<bostik> Intrusion Prevention Sys
<pattern> http://www.prelude-ids.org/ <- is that the site?
<bostik> yes !
<pattern> actually there have been some benchmarks which have shown ocaml to be almost as fast as c, and sometimes faster
<Maddas> I don't think that writing a CMS in C is a very pleasant thing at all.
<Maddas> pattern: Yes; But I doubt you can say that in general.
<pattern> maddas it's an ids
<pattern> maddas, in general it will still be faster than java
<pattern> lots faster
<Maddas> pattern: He didn't ask about Java.

<pattern> here are some benchmarks, bostik -> http://www.bagley.org/~doug/shootout/craps.shtml
<Demitar> Then there are of course other things to consider than raw speed.
<Demitar> And the side effects rich typing can have on speed.
<pattern> bostik, prelude is programmed in c only at this point?
<Maddas> Somebody should re-run the Coyote Gulch benchmark; I wonder how O'Caml would perform now.
<Maddas> (The C++ version was twice as fast as the O'Caml version in beginning 2003; I wonder if the compiler has improved significantly)
<karryall> Maddas: my guess is that the C++ compiler did improve, but not ocaml :(
<Maddas> :-/
<Maddas> s/beginning/January/
<karryall> so that was ocaml 3.06
<karryall> anyway this benchmark is about floating point computations right ?
<Maddas> Yup
<Maddas> (ICC again was about twice as fast as g++, which is what I meant with "The C++ version")
<karryall> there's the -ffast-math flag in ocaml 3.07
* Maddas nods
<karryall> indeed, could be interesting to see if it makes a differece
<karryall> so, when will you be running this benchmark? :)
<Maddas> eek.
* Maddas shrugs helplessly
<Maddas> :-)
<pattern> i would be highly interested in ocaml 3.07 vs 3.06 floating point performance
<pattern> though, i haven't really started my project, so i'll probably just go w/3.07 (or maybe 3.08 by the time i get around to it) anyway :)
<mellum> I don't think there's mich of a difference.
