<Nistur> mornin'
<Regenaxer> ☺/ Nistur
<Nistur> how goes things?
<beneroth> Niiiisssstttuuuuurrrr!
<beneroth> Regenaxer and tankf33der completed pil21 :))
<Nistur> woo! \o/
<Regenaxer> :)
<Nistur> That's awesome :D
<Regenaxer> Any bug reports or comments about the docs welcome! (docs not finished though)
<Nistur> I have very little time, buuuuuuuut it's definitely something I'll be looking into shortly :)
<Nistur> however, Regenaxer... you know I was working on the physical penti keyboard? Well, as with a lot of my projects recently, I've had to put it on hiatus because everything kind of happened at once... buuuuut... I got a new toy a couple of weeks ago
<beneroth> wohooooo \o/
<Regenaxer> cool!
<Nistur> https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/710760462895153173/771636628703674388/signal-2020-10-30-065649.jpg <--- I still need to do some calibration obviously... and yes I'm a giant geek for having that as pretty much the first thing I did... but...
<Nistur> this will definitely help me make the keyboard :P
<Regenaxer> A kind of kit?
<Nistur> it's a 3D printer
<Nistur> that was just a photo I had sent to a friend, I printed out a batch of Star Trek communicator badges... because reasons
<Regenaxer> ah
<Nistur> but yeah, the MDF buck I made of the keyboard, I was going to make moulds of it and cast the actual keyboard shell
<beneroth> clever aaproach
<Nistur> which would have worked... but has some issues... now I'm going to use... VisualSFM to scan in my keyboard, and make a model of it, then print out the shell
<Regenaxer> Looks professional
<Nistur> I think, considering I was going for an ergonomic design, the MDF model was definitely correct, because it let me feel the shape of things as it was coming together, but yeah, I think the printer will make producing it better and easier
<Nistur> Regenaxer: it's a Creality Ender 3 Pro. It's an open source printer, around... £170... so pretty much the budget end of the spectrum (compared with, for example, the Lulzbot Taz with a base model costing $2950) but it has really good reviews, is really easy to set up, and has loads of mods and upgrades, a lot of them you can print on the printer itself, so I'm definitely enjoying it
<Nistur> so it's not professional, but still good enough for me :P
<Regenaxer> Looks very good
<Regenaxer> Smooth surfaces
<Nistur> it also makes it easier because, I was talking to someone in my local linux user group, who can only type with his left hand, and was looking for a solution... so I could print him a keyboard, but I'm making a right handed one, so I just need to flip it in software before I print it and it should 'just work'
<Nistur> while, making a left handed one physically would be... painful :P
<Nistur> hmmm, let me see... https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/710760462895153173/770645589569962004/signal-2020-10-27-065657.jpg that's a test print with a file that came with the printer. No cleanup done on that one, it's how it came off the print bed... you can see stringing between the models on the Star Trek comm badges, and some warping along the bottom few layers, so I need to calibrate the machine,
<Nistur> and the software to get super pretty prints, but yep
<beneroth> how long takes a typical print size?
<Nistur> beneroth: the cat took 4h, the Star Trek communicators and phaser took... 15h... but that was highest quality and I think 60% infill (it usually prints a wall, and then honeycomb, or other pattern on the inside, the wall is I think as default something like 2mm...)
<Nistur> so, certainly not fast
<Nistur> but for most of the things I've printed this week, I've left it going overnight and come back to it being done in the morning :P
<beneroth> sounds good enough

<Nistur> yup, certainly :)
<Nistur> this weekend, I'm going to install (and print) some upgrades, then probably print a 3D scanning turntable and maybe by next weekend be able to scan in my keyboard... at which point I cry because I realise that I cannot do any 3D modelling, so cannot manipulate it to get it ready to print :D
<Nistur> I've been playing around with OpenSCAD for some other things I want to print, but I don't think I can do something as organically shaped as the keyboard in that
<beneroth> KitCAD is supposed to be good
<Nistur> KitCAD appears to be kitchen design
<Nistur> KiCAD is PCB design?
