<newbie|2> Hi, I'm new to pony. I'm trying to install pony compiler. I have downloaded binary ponyc-release-0.4.0-1661.01579a1-win64.zip. When I trying to run ponyc, I get msvcp140.dll not found, try to reinstall program. What to do?
<lisael> hi, newbie|2 looks like you did not install visual c++ beforehand
<newbie|2> thanks
<lisael> disclaimer : not a MS user here, I won't be able to help further, I fear
<newbie|2> lisael: your advice works
<newbie|2> btw is pony only 64bit? Or I can compile it as 32bit? Actually my programs compiled by ponyc - is it 64bit only, or I can compile it as 32bit?
<lisael> err... I have not tried yet :/ I guess I couldn't help either, I don't know the build chain on MS Win
<newbie|2> ok, thanks anyway
<lisael> (there's not much people here at that time, try to ask latter, when the US is awake :)
<newbie|2> ok, thanks
<lisael> About your first issue, do you think there's a missing prerquisite section in the install documentation ?
<newbie|2> Maybe it's a good point to add a note into https://github.com/ponylang/ponyc/blob/master/README.md what you need vc_redist.x64.exe and Windows SDK if you using pony on windows? README.md have "Windows 10 users will need to install the Windows 10 SDK", but I'm using windows 7 and get this error: unable to locate a Windows SDK and unable to link: no vcvars
<lisael> ok, thanks
<newbie|2> I guess I just need Visual Studio 2015?
<lisael> I'm realy not sure. It looks like the missing dll is bundled with visual C++, that's what google told me. I guess visual C++ is bundled itself in Visual Studio.
<newbie|2> thanks
<newbie|2> I install windows 7 sdk, got error unable to locate Visual Studio 14.0

<avsej> how I can output byte as ascii character?
<avsej> more precisely U8 value
<SeanTAllen> as in you have 86 and want to print "V" ?
<avsej> yes
<avsej> looks like I have to define my own settings, right? and use FormatUTF32 for format()
<SeanTAllen> I'd have to play with it and see, I just realized the only time I've ever wanted to print a single U8 was for some debugging where I called out to @printf which doesn't really suit your normal case.
<avsej> yes, in my pcap wrapper I'd like to have mode, which formats body as binary/ascii table (as usually binary data formatted). but okay. I will try to define another format
<avsej> all these conversions are not bottleneck yet :)
<SeanTAllen> if its a painful experience or has serious performance impacts, that would be a good RFC topic.
<avsej> first, I'd like to build my tool :) so focused on correctness, and then optimize and polish
<avsej> FormatUTF32 does the job. thanks

<SeanTAllen> what's your tool?
<avsej> I'm building traffic protocol inspector for Couchbase, using libpcap. It's like tshark, tcpdump, wireshark, but with internal filters and issue detection

<SeanTAllen> peek_block ?
<SeanTAllen> avsej ^^
<jemc> avsej: peek_block seems like it would be mostly an antipattern in buffered.Reader - can you elaborate more on your use case?
<jemc> or alternatively, create an RFC that describes your motivation in a detailed way to facilitate more discussion among the community
<jemc> if I understand your question correctly, I would say that "intentionally missing" is probably right, though a compelling RFC could change that

<avsej> it might be useful for debug needs, but in fact for one time, i can just read it byte-by-byte
<avsej> unfortunately I've just realized that my tool is going to implement pretty large piece of PDU reassembling from wireshark and I didn't paid much attention to it initially. That means, I will put off my current sandbox and switch to something else to write in ponylang :)
<jemc> avsej: is your work published somewhere in case someone else decides they want to pick up where you left off?
<jemc> just asking because it seemed like an interesting project
