Hm, alright, so I'm completely guessing here, but I know Ruby has a list of encodings (https://docs.ruby-lang.org/en/2.7.0/Encoding.html) — I'm guessing `encdb` is responsible for this list

janemba_ alright, that makes my guesses more likely :D it looks like Ruby believes there are encodings available on your system that typically aren't there, it might be a build-time flag that was wonky or something else in your environment when you built it

janemba_ normally I'd recommend using e.g. rbenv/rvm/asdf to manage ruby versions, it's pretty much the standard since they also help juggling having multiple versions installed on the same system

janemba_: since it went to /usr/local you said you installed a "new" version, did you have an older version installed at the same location in the same way and just make install'ed over it?
