<havenwood>
ewanchic: I see in the logs you were saying you're trying to post a question but the form submission isn't working?
<ewanchic>
Are you, or do you know anybody here that could help me?
<ewanchic>
yes. Trying to stay in the chain of command...and be patient :)
<havenwood>
ewanchic: I don't know why the form is broken, but I might be able to help find who to report it to or help with the underlying question.
<ewanchic>
That'd be great, thanks!
<havenwood>
ewanchic: What's the question you were trying to ask?
<ewanchic>
my main question was ...I was wondering if I could take ownership of the 'freight' gem. It's been dead since 12/12/12 (no joke there). I've tried contacting Tim Cull, the previous owner, and I get no response to my email or phone call.
<ewanchic>
He's had it at version 0.0.0. Unpacking the gem ...it's empty. Not sure how he pushed it up.
<ewanchic>
the freight.rb file is ..very blank.
<havenwood>
ewanchic: So you're just interested in the name? Yeah, it looks like a placeholder with no content.
<ewanchic>
Yes. I've been working on this in my head for about 1-5 years...but maybe really 25+ years. Since Rails 6 came out last month...I feel like this is the right time.
<ewanchic>
And, I've been looking for the right name for about 2 years. I'm actually been working on the gem as wee speak.
<havenwood>
ewanchic: I'm just curious, but what does the gem do?
<ewanchic>
:) ... I'm bordering a thin line here. ... I'm trying to keep most of this a secret until the right time.... I know what that sounds like.
<ewanchic>
I've very much for open source. At the same time I'm in a bind (who isn't) to get some bills paid for.
<havenwood>
ewanchic: So are you trying to "Start a discussion" on this page when you run into it not actually posting? https://help.rubygems.org/
<ewanchic>
That would be my second question...how can I make money, and still do this as an opensource project.
<havenwood>
ewanchic: There are various models for making money from open source. I'd suggest looking Sidekiq, Passenger or Falcon project for examples of monetization of open source Ruby project.
<havenwood>
ewanchic: All three offer premium features that tend to cater to larger or enterprise customers.
<havenwood>
ewanchic: When I check your link I see: That discussion is awaiting moderation.
<ewanchic>
Thanks. I'm going to look into this. I know there is a book out there called "The Cathedral and the Bazaar". I've never read it, but I know I need to soon.
<havenwood>
Yes, I think that seems normal or at least I'm not very surprised. It's a volunteer staff and very busy people. If it's time sensitive you could email RubyGems or even reach out to individual staff.
<havenwood>
I suspect someone will eventually get to moderating your post and it will go public.
<ewanchic>
Well, no. It's not time sensitive. Ironically I just found out that my IP was blocked by only 2 centers, and I thought maybe that was the issue. I've sent a request in, and in the meantime I'm using a VPN so I can use IRC.
<havenwood>
ewanchic: I suspect the post just needs to be reviewed by an actual human, and that's the only holdup.
<ewanchic>
Ok, yeah if I'm not doing anything wrong here, and I have to be patient, I can do that. I totally know what it's like to be busy.
<havenwood>
ewanchic: I think someone will get around to moderating and your request is likely to be approved.
<havenwood>
ewanchic: If you don't see any movement in the coming weeks definitely ping here or if you don't get answers here in the more populated #ruby channel.
<havenwood>
None of the RubyGems staff are in this channel but folk here and in #ruby know them at least and we can ping individuals if the forms have gotten nonresponsive.
<ewanchic>
Yeah, thanks. I almost sent out an email to the team members. I saw that a Samuel Giddins is no longer helping and I thought... mmm sad. I feel like RoR is dying, but I hope I can change that. It was good to get into IRC again. It's been years, maybe 5 since I've been on.
<havenwood>
ewanchic: Good luck with your gem! I look forward to it going public.
<ewanchic>
Oh yes...me too! I think I may hang around here for a bit. I've wanted to get more in deep with the RoR community. I feel like this is a great start.
<ewanchic>
Thank you for your help and support!
<ewanchic>
Hey, if you don't mind my asking (it'll help with the gem) what OS do you use, and database you prefer?
<havenwood>
ewanchic: At this moment I'm using macOS and I usually prefer Postgres.
<ewanchic>
nice. Do you use rvm as well?
<havenwood>
ewanchic: Yeah, I'm one of the maintainers of rvm.
<havenwood>
ewanchic: baweaver (also in this channel and #ruby) both work at Square with Sam Giddins.
<ewanchic>
!! Oh, wow, really. That's great. I've really liked using RVM over the years. It's a must for me, workstation as well as server.
<ewanchic>
Oh, that's cool! I should have came here a long time ago. Yes, Sam's website said he "used to be" a maintainer. So when I was going to send THE email, I left him out.
<ewanchic>
I've just been a bit depressed over the years seeing the decline of Ruby and Rails. I feel it has a lot of potential that a lot of people aren't seeing. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's been my gut feeling for 5 years now.
<havenwood>
ewanchic: I've actually been really encouraged by everything that's aligning in the work toward Ruby 3.
<havenwood>
ewanchic: The socketry/async libraries are already usable and they're super neat.
<havenwood>
ewanchic: I very much look forward to using all the cores with Guilds.
<havenwood>
ewanchic: Type signatures seemed like a long shot but the PhD folk working on it are really bringing it home: https://github.com/ruby/ruby-signature
<havenwood>
ewanchic: Some of his work around better Fibers has already been merged (Fiber pool, etc) and I'd love to see his Selector merged: https://github.com/ruby/ruby/pull/1870
<ewanchic>
That's really cool.. :) I'm in such a stale position here; I would love do dive into all of this. I skim the article and I love what I see, but I only know a fraction of it because of the work I do. Yet, I know I could do way better if I had more time. That a big reason for this Gem I'm creating. I'm hoping once it get's out there, I can breathe a bit more.
<havenwood>
ewanchic: Good luck!
<ewanchic>
Thanks, and thanks for the links! I'll be looking at them more, soon.
