How big is the mismatch on the ethernet physically? Could that be caused by bad layout around a via or connector?

The mismatch is about 240ps long. Which translates to around 50 mm round trip time if my math is right

it's not a via or something

but there is a differential pair coming off the SFP cage area and going to what looks like a terminating resistor

as near as i can tell the geniuses who laid out this board added a fly-by termination after the optic

rather than routing point to point like everyone else does

i have no idea what they were hoping to accomplish with this

it's a third party nic using an intel chipset, not a genuine intel one

Soo i just had a nice chat with an engineer at signalhound who uses that auburn instruments probe

apparently it varies from like -20 to -28 dB across the range and is not nearly as flat as the charts would suggest

he still likes it because if you calibrate with a signal generator to figure out the response at a given frequency it still works fine

and he uses it internally for a lot of debug stuff

But says its probably not great for super broadband stuff

So basically it's probably competitive with one of my AKL-PT2 prototypes several versions ago : p
