that be so cool to be able to resolve parameter position for inlined function automatically

<fche>
modem, are you discovering the magic that is dwarf debuginfo ?
<modem>
fche, mmm
<modem>
fche, actually i can't print a $somevar, a parameter to an inlined function
<modem>
stap will let me know no such information are available
<fche>
yeah; gcc does a reasonable but far-from-perfect job with those
<modem>
semantic error: not accessible at this address (pc: 0xffffffff81169102) [man error::dwarf]: identifier '$details' at :51:49
<modem>
dieoffset: 0x145c288 from unknown debug file for kernel
<modem>
I was wondering if the second line meant stap didn't found the vmlinux image
<fche>
see [man error::dwarf]
<modem>
yeah that might be that
<fche>
nah, it did find the vmlinux file - that's where dieoffsets come from
<fche>
but the 'unknown debug file ...' part of the message looks like an elfutils-level bug
<modem>
ah got it
<modem>
thanks

<mjw>
bug? elfutils? No way! :)
wcohen has joined #systemtap
<mjw>
I think that might be because the kernel is "special"
<mjw>
it might be that stap is using the vmlinux file as "main" ELF file (which it is, a vmlinux file isn't split, it is just stripped and the unstripped file is then used as "separate debugfile")
<mjw>
so when stap asks which debugfile is being used, it might be that there is no debugfile indeed, just the main ELF file.
<mjw>
in which case stap really should print the main ELF file...
<mjw>
modem, could you try that out, or could you give me a reproducer for that message and I try to try it out?
<fche>
thanks mark!!

mjw, that fixed the error message :
<modem>
semantic error: not accessible at this address (pc: 0xffffffff81169102) [man error::dwarf]: identifier '$details' at :52:49
<modem>
dieoffset: 0x145c288 from /usr/lib/debug/lib/modules/3.10.0-123.20.1.el7.x86_64/vmlinux
<mjw>
awesome!
<modem>
yep :) thanks
* mjw
happily commits
<fche>
ship it!
<mjw>
but seriously that is slightly nuts.
<mjw>
note that this means that the "separate debug vmlinux" is in fact a full vmlinux image plus debuginfo... hurry for size!
