ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <andlabs>
more computers are coming my way I guess
<andlabs>
this time a 3com Audrey (actually two of them)
<ej5>
Lord_Nightmare, that's what i did. no need to cut the original trace, inductors in parallel reduce the inductance.
<andlabs>
woah both a YM2413 and a YM2413B
<andlabs>
how do they differ anyway
<m4t>
shrug
<m4t>
Yamaha YM2413B and YMF281B are low power variants of YM2413 and YMF281 respectively.
<m4t>
These variants also eliminate the crossover distortion of the DAC. A lower power consumption indicates that these variants may be made using a CMOS process.
<m4t>
maybe kind of like ym2612 vs ym3438
<andlabs>
heh
<m4t>
are there any sources of non-video game music for sega? kinda like all the sid stuff that's popped up over the yrs
<natarii>
you mean homebrew stuff, not from commercial games?
<natarii>
https://www.youtube.com/c/Molkirill/videos, there are also a few other youtube channels i can't think of off the top of my head. but all those links are things i've played a bunch
<natarii>
yeah, either in the bandcamp download or there will be a link in the description or something
<superctr>
japanese home computers also had FM chips. there was a lot of music made with MXDRV (.MDX format) and PMD (.M) format for the X68000 and PC-98 respectively
<andlabs>
pc-98 update: I tripped a setting and got it to go past 14MB in the RAM check but even after checking all the RAM it doesn't boot
<andlabs>
HA IT WAS THE HARD DRIVE AFTER ALL
<andlabs>
THE THING IS ALIVE
<Lord_Nightmare>
m4t: we think that the ymf281(b?) and the ym2413b use the same die, 2 metal CMOS, while the original ym2413 is nmos, as is the VRC7 which is ~90% the same die as the ym2413
<Lord_Nightmare>
the "FHB013" die on siliconpr0n is the 2-metal die used by ymf281(b?) and possibly ym2413b
<Lord_Nightmare>
the ym2413 die isn't imaged yet, but there is one that's been decapped, waiting for imaging
<Lord_Nightmare>
but from what we can see from low res pics, its 90% the same die as the VRC7
<Lord_Nightmare>
vrc7 has an added upper area which holds the mapper logic, and the RO output from the dac is just not connected anywhere
<andlabs>
oh it literally says "16MB or more memory"; I guess it's a compatibility thing?

hrm that M48T18 nvram/rtc in the pic i posted earlier is dated 1999 and somehow still readable with data intact. 21 yrs seems a long time for a lithium batt to tick.
