<cr1901_modern> Does the chip provide the ready signal and the chip writes its own registers?
samlittlewood has joined ##yamahasynths
<natarii> youre not supposed to complete the write until after ready goes high
<natarii> and need to complete it soon after it goes high, to avoid writing again
<cr1901_modern> Hmmm...
<natarii> the latter half of that, either i failed to parse it out of the datasheet, or it's not mentioned. i ended up figuring it out based on observation, then found the info in the 76496 datasheet
<cr1901_modern> also re: https://twitter.com/agirisan/status/1319940537747689472... this reminds me I should eventually make a list of FM synthesis controllers (players being a proper subset) for sale. 1/2
<cr1901_modern> I vaguely recall a few designs made by Japanese enthusiasts (the G.I.M.I.C.) which got sold in specialty online stores, but not really elsewhere.
<natarii> yeah
<natarii> there's also kenchan's stuff
<cr1901_modern> the gacha store?
<natarii> yes
<cr1901_modern> I think they mainly sell chips by themselves
<natarii> he does a gimic-like
<natarii> i think it predates gimic
<cr1901_modern> I'm minddumping: This would be analogous to Foone's floppy disk project list. It'd include, an author, link to build insns/board files, link to where it's sold, and checkmarks for VGM, MIDI, and/or Other
* cr1901_modern groans
<cr1901_modern> This is something I should've been doing for years now, but never remember to do it when it's fresh. I imagine a lot of my RTs of said projects, especially from JP enthusiasts, are lost to time too.

<cr1901_modern> natarii: Re: MegaGRRL, I reached out to someone who sells their own YM2151 kits on their shop. Can't promise it'll help, but worth a shot.
<cr1901_modern> check your tweets
<cr1901_modern> (Also, TIL that the Si5351A's PLL output frequency goes low enough to drive a YM2151 in either 3.58 or 4MHz mode)

<andlabs> https://www.ebay.com/itm/gold-scrap-recovery-lot-of5-DEC-Alphaserver-Backplanes-lots-of-gold-12lbs-total/143804416513 here's a peice of retro tech that someone listed on ebay with the apparent goal of getting people who buy scrap gold to buy?????
<Foone> yeah, I hate those people. I'm surprised they bother listing it on ebay, though. you'd think the shipping costs would ruin the thing profit margin
<Foone> I see them sometimes at the local swap meet thing and I have to resist stabbing them
<Foone> it's great, they have like a big barrel of old PCI/ISA cards and they don't give any shit about the condition. Tube Tube find one or two useful and possibly functional cards in there once, but I usually just get discouraged and move on
<Foone> they like to rip off the connectors. so you'll see like a Voodoo 2 which is in OK state other than that someone removed the VGA connector with pliers
<andlabs> gotta make that illegal
<andlabs> also make goodwill recycling deal illegal
<Foone> fucking goodwill. I think it was LGR who found out that the reason you see so many of those empty 5.25" floppy disk storage boxes at goodwill is that they get old computer stuff donated all the time... and they throw away the disks and sell the box
<andlabs> they said they throw away the disks for privacy reasons
<Foone> yeah
<andlabs> which at least is more understandable than lol we can only sell modern dell computers
<andlabs> anyway prices on retro hardware are skyrocketing all the time now so I'm just buying what I can now while I still can
<Foone> still, at least they're not the salvation army
<andlabs> goddamn internet
<andlabs> they are NOT RARE AT ALL
<andlabs> also
<andlabs> Pietro Gagliardi, [24.10.20 14:14] oh hey there apparently is an S-Video to Component adapter, the Ambery SDV1
<andlabs> Pietro Gagliardi, [24.10.20 14:14] problem: it's out of stock on Ambery's website, and both Amazon and ebay have unbranded ones that just steal the pictures from Ambery's site...
<Foone> yeah. like model M keyboards. they're not rare, IBM made millions of them, but the prices have skyrocketed because of mechanical keyboard geeks who want to rip out the controller board and replace it with one that'll plug into their macbook
<andlabs> or just mechanical keyboard geeks in general
<superctr> it sounds pointless
<superctr> i'm happy with my unicomp
<superctr> it's still cheap and mass produced
<andlabs> because mechanical keyboards are the sliced bread of jesuses
<Foone> but they're SLIGHTLY NOT AS GOOD SUPPOSEDLY and NOT AS VINTAGE and YOUR RETRO SHOW-OFF PENIS WILL BE NOT AS LARGE
<superctr> sure quality isn't as good as the old IBM stuff but it makes up for it by being brand new :P
<andlabs> also since when was unicomp cheap
<Foone> cheap compared to getting a vintage model M, now that punks have driven the prices up.
<superctr> my unicomp, including international shipping, still cost me less than 100€
<superctr> I consider that cheap
<andlabs> I must be looking at the wrong ones then
<andlabs> I remember them being a minimum of $100 before shipping
<andlabs> but eyah now is the time to build that collection I guess
<andlabs> too bad I don't have enough room to do so to infinity and beyond right now
<andlabs> that's my excuse, anyway
<Foone> that's why god invented storage units
<andlabs> in the past few days I have added a pc-98 laptop, a commodore vic-20, a commodore plus/4, a commodore 16, a timex 2068 (NIB), an atari 800, a tandy color computer 1 (pre-modded for composite! and under $100!), a commodore 128 (which will be a repair job for me when it arrives), and potentially a sgi octane depending on how this auction ends, and potentially an atari 1040ste dpeending on how the sgi auction ends
<andlabs> I have a problem
<andlabs> I have considerd using storage units; I am afraid of theft =P
<Foone> I have only had that happen in dreams: I went to my storage units and someone had cleaned one of them out completely... and left the laserdiscs
<andlabs> lol
<Foone> I was vaguely offended. that shrink-wrapped CAV Toy Story release is worth at least a hundred dollars, come on
<andlabs> exactly
<andlabs> anyway in a very short time videos like early LGR videos that advocated for real hardware over emulation will come off as shockingly elitist and out of touch
<andlabs> evne with the context of contemporary prices
<andlabs> (gonna highlight Nerionaya so I don't have to copy that to telegram)
<andlabs> and I'm mostly interested in the SGI machine as a test machine for libui
<andlabs> an IRIX version of libui would necessarily need to be rewritten since GTK+ 3 cannot run on IRIX unless someone wants to port d-bus
<andlabs> but I guess also Linux for MIPS would be fun
<andlabs> ah cool someone outbid me on the SGI by $5
<andlabs> well there are other SGI octanes I can get
<natarii> for some reason i was looking at pentium pros now and half of the ebay listings are all about scrap gold 🤑🤑🤑
<natarii> s/now/yesterday/
<andlabs> I bought the 1040STE instead
<andlabs> those are much less common
<andlabs> and possibly the closest I will get to a TT or a Falcon in the short term
<andlabs> I already have a 1040STF
<andlabs> (which is the original 1040ST but I might as well clarify F vs FM; was there a 1040STFM?)
<andlabs> also I have a Terriblefire TF030 for the Amiga CD32 now
<andlabs> and the seller used a ceramic gold capped 68030
<andlabs> which is pretty sweet
<cr1901_modern> That name bugs the hell out of me... like it'll run your Amiga so fast it'll cause a Terrible Fire
<superctr> as long as they don't make power supplies I think it will be fine
<andlabs> no, bad power supplies was Commodore's job
<andlabs> =P
