ChanServ changed the topic of ##yamahasynths to: Channel dedicated to questions and discussion of Yamaha FM Synthesizer internals and corresponding REing. Discussion of synthesis methods similar to the Yamaha line of chips, Sound Blasters + clones, PCM chips like RF5C68, and CD theory of operation are also on-topic. <andlabs> sound ultragravis
<andlabs> hey Foone is that All About America by the same Unicorn Software that made https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1O1RpTXH5vc ?
<Foone> yup
<Foone> same designer
<andlabs> ha
<andlabs> we need to rip the VGMs from that game btw
<Foone> the hard part would be to find a copy
<Foone> apparently it's in the total dos collection, though
<Foone> but they call it "Vocabulary Quest In The Land Of The U (19xx)(Unicorn Software)"
<andlabs> lol
<Foone> actually, maybe no? I think I instead find their list of missing games
<Foone> I know one person who has a copy, though... I sent him a message.

<Lord_Nightmare> ej5: i have two of those open frame "cucumber slicer" fans here
<Lord_Nightmare> the smaller one the cord failed and I replaced it a few years ago, i use it to blow fumes away when soldering
<ej5> yeah those are fun, i have two myself
<ej5> the one in the pic and a smaller one that oscillates
<Lord_Nightmare> the big one though the bearings are kinda meh
<Lord_Nightmare> the grease/oil wicks are incredibly gross, and it doesn't turn with much force
<Lord_Nightmare> which leads me to believe, due to your twitter post, that the motor windings are bad
<Lord_Nightmare> and half of it is shorted so it only turns with a small amount of power
<ej5> are they wool wicks?
<Lord_Nightmare> i have no idea. could be asbestos for all i know
<ej5> you can pull them out and reuse them. i soaked mine in laundry detergent
<Lord_Nightmare> they're in screw-on aluminum? cups
<ej5> got all the grease out. they were black but after cleaning they turned white
<ej5> yeah if you are sure it's real wicking you can unscrew the caps
<ej5> also check if the fan blades spin freely by hand. if they turn a tiny bit and stop, then the bearings need work
<Lord_Nightmare> i did unscrew the caps years ago, the grease/oil mess in them was like unhardened gelatin
<Lord_Nightmare> the fan i have (a the larger fan is a dayton fan) has unscreable bearings on the bottom of the front and back motor bearings
<Lord_Nightmare> the small fan uses wool (or asbestos, i didn't look to close) disks soaked in oil for the front and back bearings
<Lord_Nightmare> basically like felt pads with a hole in the middle where the shaft runs
<Lord_Nightmare> if its asbestos, its soaked in oil, the fibers aren't going anywhere
<cr1901_modern> Lord_Nightmare, ej5: I have a Westinghouse fan that seems similar. At the very least, it has a free finger-removal feature
<Lord_Nightmare> the blades of the big fan are made of brass
<Lord_Nightmare> the small fan blades are made of steel, and rusting; i've sanded them a few times but they really need to be buffed/polished to be shiny again
<Lord_Nightmare> and i don't have a kit for that. one of these days i'm planning to get a dremel tool which should allow that, but i need a kit with proper polishing paste etc
<Lord_Nightmare> i'd rather find someone who already has that stuff
