<kristianpaul>
wow sysmocon is going to manufacturing !
<Necrosporus>
But there's chines laptops for 100 bucks including shipping and it can run Vim as well
<wolfspraul>
if that's not enough for you no other argument will win you over and you are better off with those other devices
<Necrosporus>
I got one
<Necrosporus>
well, I'd like a ben but for 100 bucks including shipping
<wolfspraul>
won't happen
<wolfspraul>
price will go up, not down
<wolfspraul>
we want to make a *better* Ben in the future
<Necrosporus>
Why? Ben is pretty much outdated and outdated hw is usually cheaper
<Necrosporus>
Current one I mean
<wolfspraul>
fine but Ben is different :-)
<wolfspraul>
with 'outdated' you probably mean comparing some numbers to other devices
<wolfspraul>
it was outdated on that perspective since birth
<wolfspraul>
but it's not what the Ben is about
<wolfspraul>
I'm not trying to sell you a Ben btw
<Necrosporus>
Yeah.. it has lover specs than my PDA I bought in 2003
<wolfspraul>
please don't, if you don't totally love it

<wolfspraul>
ok great
<Necrosporus>
but there is no hw keyboard
<wolfspraul>
the Ben will remain on sale until we have a worthy successor
<gargon>
Necrosporus: on amazon.com, you can get a ben for usd 94
<wolfspraul>
and at least from me, it will never be discounted :-)
<wolfspraul>
guaranteed

<wolfspraul>
we need to advance the milkymist soc stuff a bit more before taking another good shot at a mobile device
<wolfspraul>
so for now we have the Ben and I am proud of it :-)
<wolfspraul>
but you don't need be, no worries
<Necrosporus>
I think I need a pocket device running GNU/Linux
<wolfspraul>
ok we will work harder and maybe have a Ben successor that pleases you :-)
<wolfspraul>
maybe
<Necrosporus>
There's Nokia N9
<Necrosporus>
I have tried it
<wolfspraul>
those are very powerful devices, amazing stuff
<wpwrak>
Necrosporus: you're comparing with devices that are produced in large volume and generally don't have much device-specific open source support. in some cases, they're generic enough that they don't need any specific support. in other cases, they're not, and things will run badly if at all.
<Necrosporus>
There's a video core which doesn't work with free software drivers
<Necrosporus>
Nokia N9 has linux preinstalled
<wpwrak>
Necrosporus: having such things is what drives the ben's value/cost/price up.
<wpwrak>
Necrosporus: if we just had Nokia's budget for lighting a bonfire with our money every night ... ;-)
<Necrosporus>
Nokia N9 however lacks hardware keyboard

larsc: it seems to be quite popular. though technical documentation seems to be hard to find. maybe the popularity comes from it using the MALI graphics core, which has been reverse-engineered. (unlike the other, more deeply proprietary cores common on smartphones)
<viric>
wpwrak: that quadcore from samsung also has a mali
<wpwrak>
ah, nice ! die powerVR, die ! :)
<viric>
powerVR?
<viric>
wpwrak: have you seen the video with them playing mariokart64 4-players with that $130 samsung?
<wpwrak>
on of the proprietary graphics cores
<viric>
ah :)
<wpwrak>
no .. haven't followed the smartphone scene for a while. waiting for some more walls to fall :)
<larsc>
time to bring out the trumpets?
<viric>
:)
<wpwrak>
or just let a million moles dig a little longer :)
<viric>
hehe
<viric>
If I hadn't a sheevaplug, I'd buy that samsung thing

<roh>

<wpwrak>

<wpwrak>
