<wolfspraul>
don't ask how or why that severe rootfs corruption went away, but it did by itself just by sleeping (on my side :-))
<wolfspraul>
I need to *urgently* work on the servers and the long neglected todo list...
<wolfspraul>
and after these good plans, going to do something more important first :-) what else...
<wpwrak>
it's always nice if messy problems solve themselves on their own ;-)

wpwrak: in summer?
<whitequark>
that's more dependent on the country than on time of year.
<whitequark>
or did you mean "even in summer"? in which case, yes.
<wpwrak>
yes, even in summer :)

<larsc>
wpwrak: do you mind making xdg-open the default action for opening the pdf in dsv?
scientes has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<wpwrak>
larsc: hmm. if picking a launcher, then it probably should be mimeopen ? it's kinda hard to find something that everyone is likely to have
<wpwrak>
xdg-open is kinda unfriendly. doesn't say how you can change the default choice.
<larsc>
well, it uses the system default
<larsc>
and installed on all modern linux systems
<larsc>
modern desktop system
<larsc>
s
<wpwrak>
hmm. mimeopen seems to have a somewhat obscure origin. libfile-mimeinfo-perl
<mth>
who changes the default choice? the user can change it using KDE or GNOME or whatever is behind xdg-open and if the calling program wants to change the default, why not launch the desired application directly?
<wpwrak>
mth: that's what i currenly do. i launch $DSV_PDFVIEWER, which defaults to xpdf
<wpwrak>
mth: and how do i change that "system default" if my desktop is fvwm ?
<mth>
you could use $DSV_PDFVIEWER if it is set and xdg-open if it is not set
<mth>
fvwm is not a desktop, is it?
<wpwrak>
alright, my "desktop" ;-)
<wpwrak>
besides that, it's just a few xterms and whatever browser may happen to wander by
<mth>
you can implement your own xdg-open replacement
<mth>
it seems xdg-open supports KDE, GNOME, xfce4 and lxde out of the box
<wpwrak>
now that sounds a little awkward ;-)
GNUtoo has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<larsc>
and it has a generic fallback
<mth>
well, if you want to run a minimalist system, you've got to take the good and the bad ;)
<wpwrak>
hmm, /etc/alternatives/ doesn't seem to have a solution either.
<wpwrak>
seems that xdg-open's been around for a few years. six years ... still pretty new, though.
<larsc>
has been always there, as long as I can remember ;)
<wpwrak>
those little benefits of amnesia ;-)

<larsc>
well actually I can't remember when I started using Linux, but the internet suggests that it was in 2005-2006
jow_laptop has joined #qi-hardware
<roh>
larsc: same here.. but i know i was hired because it had something to do with it around 2000... so it must have been 98 or earlier
<roh>
97/98 .. suse 5.1 was recent and 5.3 came soon after
<larsc>
I still remember the day I did my first Linux installation though, just not the date of that day
<larsc>
I always thought the system crashed, because the screen blanked... and restarted installation
<larsc>
it was a gentoo system so installation took a bit longer
<larsc>
how I miss those days of watching your system endlessly compling stuff as it upgrades
<wpwrak>
and then, after ten hours, fail for some reason ...
<larsc>
conflicting eflags, or whatever they were called
<wpwrak>
or just some odd combination they didn't anticipate. what's annoying is that they delete old packages. e.g., i have a gentoo system that had its last major update in 2007 and it's basically stuck at that now because there isn't even a coherent upgrade path in the gentoo archives :-(
<larsc>
hm, I still have that PC somewhere, last updated four years ago or so
<qi-bot>
[commit] Werner Almesberger: dsv/dsv: change viewer default from xpdf to xdg-open; introduce DSV_VIEWER; add README (master) http://qi-hw.com/p/eda-tools/4a0b547
<larsc>
yeay!
<larsc>
btw. what's actually missing is a description of the catalog file format
<wpwrak>
and as an added benefit, i now know how to make chromium open PDFs with xpdf ;-)
<wpwrak>
(catalog file format) i know, i know. only so many jiffies in a night ... :)
