i've spent $525 on therapy in the past 12 hours
<pikajude>
sorry, 18 hours
<pikajude>
christ it's expensive not being healthy
<ec>
the fuck is a long hundredweight
<ec>
fuck, i hate our units-and-measures systems
<jfhbrook>
I adore imperial units
<jfhbrook>
they're just so
<jfhbrook>
quaint
<jfhbrook>
and adorable
<jfhbrook>
like finding an old stone cottage in the french alps
<jfhbrook>
...is that how that works? I've never been to Europe
<jfhbrook>
anyways, imperial units are hilarious, and kind of a nice trick
<jfhbrook>
f=ma right? in terms of gravity on earth at sea level, this is roughly w = mg (w is weight)
<jfhbrook>
now, there are actually *to* kinds of pounds
<jfhbrook>
lbf and lbm
<jfhbrook>
so, something with a *mass* of 1 lb, at sea level, *weights* 1lb within some tiny margin of error
<jfhbrook>
in other words, 32.2 lbm * ft / s^2 = 1 lbf
<jfhbrook>
note that you can do the same thing with kilograms force, though that's not an SI thing and is kinda hilarious, BUT the russians totally used kgf for rocketry
<jfhbrook>
but the *best* units are like, barrels, and chains
<jfhbrook>
speaking of surveying, there are multiple definitions of the foot
<jfhbrook>
depending on whether you're using the "that's it we're pegging everything to SI" foot or the "this is what Americans have been using for surveying for decades" foot
<jfhbrook>
I believe there are others as well

<jfhbrook>
oh yeah, more on that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foot_(unit)#Pre-1959 There's the US old-school foot pegged to SI, the imperial old-school foot based on a standard yard (a metal stick basically), the international foot as defined by treaty, and then the US survey foot which was defined using a DIFFERENT "that's it we're pegging everything to SI" conversion factor
<jfhbrook>
all of which are imperceptibly different close up but which can add up in the aggregate when used, for instance, in surveying

<ec>
lolll
<purr>
lolololol
<ec>
the French got this one thing right
<jfhbrook>
well it's like anything
<jfhbrook>
they were able to come in after the fact and suggest something that learned from the mistakes of prior systems
<jfhbrook>
it helps that they were on a huge decimal kick
<jfhbrook>
reportedly they also tried to change time to have 10 segments, but hours/minutes/etc were too entrenched
<jfhbrook>
12 is nice though, because it's divisible by 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12
