<projectgus> BleedingBytes: 2500mAh usb charger battery pack from ALDI
<projectgus> pressed into service as a "UPS"
* dgp has done that before :)
<BleedingBytes> ah nice
<BleedingBytes> I've my gk 802 open
<BleedingBytes> e think im going to stick a passive cooler
<BleedingBytes> maybe with some adhesive conductor
<BleedingBytes> the velcro was a good idea too
<BleedingBytes> i might cut a hole for access to the inner microSD slot too
<projectgus> yeah I was about to use electrical type when I realised I had that lying around
<BleedingBytes> if i find myself very adventurous
<projectgus> headless w/ gpu off it doesn't seem to get particularly hot, although I expect I can still trigger the thermal throttling if I really hammer it
<projectgus> electrical tape, even
<BleedingBytes> i read about the SATA and PCI-E pins today
<BleedingBytes> that is amazing
<BleedingBytes> well ive no idea how to take advantage of the PCI-E stuff
<BleedingBytes> but a SATA connector would be very nice
<projectgus> Sabre board has SATA I think
<projectgus> I don't know of anything in the <$100 range w/ imx6 and SATA
<BleedingBytes> the wandboard has imx6 too
<BleedingBytes> and SATA
<projectgus> ah ok
<BleedingBytes> but its more expensive yeah
<projectgus> and nitrogen6x I now see, but it's $199
<projectgus> nitrogen has a pciexpress slot as well
<BleedingBytes> the quad will be $169
<BleedingBytes> i got a new soldering iron this week... i need a project :) maybe i could try soldering some leads lol
<BleedingBytes> but i would still need a SATA driver
<projectgus> it'd be neat if someone made one with an mSATA pinout on it, plug a tiny performant SSD in
<projectgus> SATA driver is probably available, but if the balls aren't broken out from the base of the BGA package then you're out of luck no matter how well you can solder tiny wires
<BleedingBytes> mmhh
<dgp> BleedingBytes: the gk802 seems to have sata too if you want to solder
<BleedingBytes> dgp: i meant the gk802
<dgp> projectgus: They are.. check the hardware page on the wiki :)
<dgp> BleedingBytes: ah, sorry didn't read that you were actually consider trying it!
<BleedingBytes> im looking at the board
<BleedingBytes> those are really tiny pads
<dgp> you can solder magnet wire too them without much trouble
<dgp> If you don't want to risk your board wait a few weeks until I have confirmed it actually works. It might need some extra passives to be added on the empty foot prints
<projectgus> dgp: oh, i didn't realise. well done!
<projectgus> wow lots of things broken out on the board
<projectgus> I wonder if that's an artifact of copy-pasting the main imx6 routing from another design somewhere
<BleedingBytes> might be a good idea to look at another imx6 board schematic
<dgp> I guess they took the reference schematic, placed the parts out on the board and pressed the go button for the auto router
<BleedingBytes> and see how they wire up the sata connector
<projectgus> dgp: really? I would have thought for the high speed stuff around the SoC you'd use a reference pcb layout as well
<dgp> projectgus: I think you can tell a good auto router that you want matched impedence etc
<projectgus> oh ok
<dgp> projectgus: but yeah, they probably lifted lots of the layout too
<dgp> SATA and PCI-E need some power supply and external reference stuff though so I wonder if those are actually present
<BleedingBytes> for sata 2.5 i think its only 5v and GND
<BleedingBytes> for bigger 3.5 driver maybe 12v too or so
<dgp> on the port side its just the two pairs and power.. but there are supplies inside the soc that need to be supplied
<dgp> but... 2 of those pins are high and two are low from what I remember, so maybe they are up and running
<BleedingBytes> hehe see this is already in progress on your side
<BleedingBytes> great
<BleedingBytes> :)
<dgp> I only have the one gk802 at the moment though and it's for a client's project. So I have to finish that first before killing it ;)

<BleedingBytes> in the meanwhile i'll try to get magnetic wire, a very thin solder and a sata connector
<dgp> not magnetic, magnet
<dgp> its made for making transformers etc. It has a very thin insulation you can remove by dipping it in solder
<BleedingBytes> oops magnet
<BleedingBytes> thanks
<BleedingBytes> i looked it up on wikipedia, didnt know about magnet wire before
<BleedingBytes> but was already screwing it up :)
<dgp> but don't blame me if it doesn't work. just reporting the pads I found from taking the bga off
<BleedingBytes> ill blame myself for not being able to to it, if it doesnt work
<dgp> :)
<BleedingBytes> *to do it
<dgp> I'll write down which pad is which ball later on today
<dgp> I did it for the pci-e section but I left the sata section
<BleedingBytes> being able to get pci-e working would be great too
<BleedingBytes> would really open a lot of possibilities for this board i guess
<dgp> PCI-E seems to be 2 pairs and a clock pair, but I couldn't find the clock pair in the datasheet
<dgp> but I don't know much about pci-e really
<BleedingBytes> do you know if the SoC is this IMX6DQCEC ?
<BleedingBytes> im trying to see the datasheet on freescales website
<dgp> one sec, I have it floating around my desk
<dgp> The last part is YM10AC from what I can see.. it's in IMX6DQCEC
<BleedingBytes> i cant read the leters on the chip
<BleedingBytes> thanks
<BleedingBytes> should be MCIMX6Q5EYM10AC then
<dgp> hopefully I got the right one heh
<dgp> The differences are clock speed and if it has vpu and/or gpu.. so I think I got the right one
<dgp> BleedingBytes: the soc from mine starts with sci
<dgp> so its has hdcp
<BleedingBytes> weird, i cant find a datasheet starting with sci and ending with 10ac
<dgp> the sci parts are mentioned in the table for the IMX6DQCEC parts
<dgp> but there is no 10ac ..
<dgp> not sure, it says they are only examples of orderable parts
<BleedingBytes> according to page 3 on the datasheet
<BleedingBytes> the SC stands for "Special"
<BleedingBytes> ye not prototype or mass production
<dgp> mmm in the motorola days it was MC, SC and XC I think .. SC was a prefix for engineering samples IIRC
<BleedingBytes> the A means there's no HDCP
<dgp> ah ok, so thats encoded in the last two letters
* dgp wonders what the encrypted eprom is for
<dgp> s/eprom/eeprom/
<BleedingBytes> but the 10 means its 1GHz and this is sold as 1.2GHz maybe thats why it get so hot lol
<dgp> the heat seems ok until you start using the gpu
<BleedingBytes> i find nothing on the eprom
<dgp> contents on the eeprom or details?
<dgp> it's listed on the gk802 hardware page. I have one off of the board now that I could dump
hp__ has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<BleedingBytes> apparently tablets with the imx6 also have the same eprom
<BleedingBytes> i googled for it
<dgp> I thought it was where the hdcp key was stored

<Strswrd> dgp: I actually was able to run Antutu test with the original casing and thermal pad.. got 10980 "points". imediately after I ran the "stability test" and it was hovering between 49.1 and 51.3 (don't know if that good or bad, but it seems to compare well to the Nexus 4 example on the Antutu web page..more stable curve and higher points)
<dgp> Strswrd: cool, did you get the graphics corruption after running it?
<Strswrd> II got some corruption on the green progress bar.. nothing bad
<dgp> that's good, with the stock case all the text went crazy here
<Strswrd> I'm surprized actually..!
<Strswrd> tried xbmc as well... seemed to work ok.
<dgp> video playback was smooth?
<dgp> I only tried youtube
<Strswrd> I only tested a SD movie file over wlan... so maybe we shouldn't be too optimistic just yet... but that worked with well
<dgp> 10980 points seems like an okish score, a bit below the nexus7.. I wonder if it's bit lower because the gk802 is driving a massive screen
<Strswrd> perhaps... I was using 720p
<dgp> If you notice anything you think needs fixing tell me and I'll see what I can do
<dgp> I guess I should upload the source somehere so other people can have a go at it
<Strswrd> managed to screw things up so that I got a lockscreen which I couldn't get out of... also it usually takes a couple of on/off's to get the stick to start
<dgp> mmm you'll need a serial console to debug that
<Strswrd> yeah, have to buy me one of those... any recomendations?
<dgp> get a cp2102 board off of ebay
<dgp> if it's not starting it's probably because it's panicing in the kernel somewhere
<Strswrd> thanks!
<Strswrd> ok
<dgp> it used to not boot cold for me when the CAAM stuff was enabled.. I disabled it and it seems pretty stable here at least
<Strswrd> I tried to do a soft reboot with the app supplied... it didnt start up.
fossxplorer has joined #imx6-dongle
<Strswrd> I will do a fresh image write when I get home... as of now I threw everything and anything I could think of onto the stick to punish it.. i.e to provoke a failure.. could be I messed something up... I'll try to be a little more systematic from now on
<dgp> Strswrd: yeah, it crashes in the kernel somewhere
<dgp> wifi and bt worked though?
<Strswrd> wifi worked perfectly.. seemed better than in the original image.. bluetooth I didn't try.. it was getting too late in the evening :-)
<Strswrd> (and my gf wanted to watch tv)
<dgp> haha
<Strswrd> :)
<dgp> well, I have one person that knows I wasn't lying at least haha
<Strswrd> lying?
<dgp> about having it working ;)
<Strswrd> ahh... well you got two actually, but my gf wasn't too enthusiastic... ;)
<dgp> put a snes emu on there and get some BT pads..
<Strswrd> yeah... that'll do the trick!
<Strswrd> A thought.. maybe you could send deadhp1 over at armtvtech your image. He did some work on the original android image.. rooting and stuff like that. Maybe he's interested in tweak your image to suit the android community.. if you feel like it ofcourse..
<dgp> Thats fine, try to keep it within people you know though. I don't want a ton of people on my case about issues with it right now
<dgp> If he wants to poke around with the source I can put the whole lump up somewhere
<Strswrd> I don't want to take credit for your work.. I'll post a private message to him informing him about you.. if thats OK. I totally get that you want to focus on your project. Hence, my sneaky idea was to levering that hazzle on someone else..
<dgp> Its best if he works with source than hacking up the image
<dgp> anyhow back in a bit.
<Strswrd> sure

<Strswrd_> oh... guess he knows then..
<dgp> If he wants the source he just needs to ask :)
<rm> interesting
<rm> my GK802 seems to either hang or lose network
<rm> after some days of idling
<rm> 2nd time this happens, don't have a serial port or display connected at the moment

<projectgus> rm: weird. the most uptime I've had is about 5 days so far, but I haven't had a lockup yet
<projectgus> except for once or twice I think it locked up when my TV came on or off
<projectgus> when it was connected to HDMI
<projectgus> my TV has the "bad" EDID so it may be that, or something else
<projectgus> you haven't enabled Gadget mode in your kernel, have you?
