<rak[2]> failed to provide key; failed to find any peer in table;
<rak[2]> any suggestiosn?
<whyrusleeping> rak[2]: thats odd... no other errors printed out?
<whyrusleeping> gateway nodes might need to be restarted
<whyrusleeping> you might try restarting your daemon once or twice
<wking> whyrusleeping: I'm suspicious of the gateway nodes, since I had trouble connecting to them (maybe 20 minutes ago?)
<whyrusleeping> yyeeaahh.... theyve been wonky lately
<whyrusleeping> not sure why (since theyre docker and i cant touch them)
<whyrusleeping> except mars
<whyrusleeping> so ill look at her
<wking> I ended up grepping the channel logs for an 'ipfs swarm connect ...' command using a non-gateway IP ;)
<whyrusleeping> we should publish a list of 'unofficial gateways'
<whyrusleeping> yeap, mars ran into go-peerstream#5
<whyrusleeping> jbenet: o/
<rak[2]> whyrusleeping: i tried restarting the daemon several times today.. let me call tee before running the daemon and grab the log..
<wking> sounds good to me. Or have your node cache and retry previous peers. I think that was mentioned in one of the issues I skimmed while trying to figure out how to connect
<whyrusleeping> rak[2]: no need, its the gateways, theyre messed up
<whyrusleeping> i fixed the memory leak bugs that caused an immediate panic and restart
<whyrusleeping> so now they are getting into bad states and hanging
<whyrusleeping> which makes it seem worse overall than before
<whyrusleeping> lol
<rak[2]> intersting.
<rak[2]> well, i thought earlier i should have probably been in here asking questions in stead of trying to resolve msyelf. i had a feeling it may not be on my end.. =P
<whyrusleeping> rak[2]: yeap, when things dont behave the way you think they should, its normally our fault
<whyrusleeping> and letting us know is a good first step
<jbenet> rebooted gateways
<jbenet> (fourth time today)
<whyrusleeping> jbenet: its go-peerstream#5
<whyrusleeping> at least, thats what mars has hit every single time
<jbenet> yeahhh-- that's annoying. i started the fix for that-- it's a tricky problem.
<whyrusleeping> yeap, its non-trivial
<whyrusleeping> because we also need to time things out
<whyrusleeping> because if we have ten workers, that just makes it take ten times as long to deadlock
<jbenet> (and, fix has to go in p2p/net/swarm/ instead, becuase handshakes neet to timeout
<jbenet> haha yep, tiemouts make it complicated)
<whyrusleeping> im glad you closed that paren

<krl> jbenet: pushed a fix for the node api to npm, can you, or anyone look at the tiny node-api PR?
<jbenet> krl: just did! :)
<krl> ah cool
<krl> yesterday i got stuck writing this: https://github.com/krl/funboot
<krl> i think this might be an interesting approach for standalone electron-client stuff also
vitzli has joined #ipfs
<jbenet> krl: oh yeah i wanted to take a look-- so is this basically doing publishing of js modules?
<krl> yeah, kind of like require(hash)
<krl> and also has browserify import support
<krl> and keeps a list of local names-for-hashes, that you can tweak as you wish
<jbenet> ohhhhhh awesome!
<jbenet> sorry, the example is a bit unclear-- wasnt getting it at first
<krl> yeah, i slapped the readme together way too late yesterday
<krl> i still need to work on terminology
<jbenet> so i want to make `ipm` which is like npm but with ipfs. for the node part of things, i want to just use npm modules exactly, and just allow publishing directly to ipfs
<krl> atm, the actual bootloader is around 100 lines, the rest is read from ipfs
<jbenet> krl: btw, if we make an abstract-blob-store then we can use ipfs with bengl's reginabox
<jbenet> krl: this is great
<jbenet> btw, krl: i'll be at dtn.is -- so let's hang out and hack

<jbenet> krl: we should make tools to visualize them, too.
<jbenet> have you seen graphmd?
<krl> oh
<krl> no, i should look at that
<krl> but basically i'm thinking unbalanced finger-btrees
<jbenet> graphmd <hash> | dot Tsvg | browser
<krl> it seems you can get away without balancing if you can only append at the end
<vitzli> jbenet, may I add 2c on ipfs add performance?
<jbenet> vitzli: it's not great right now, did you see https://github.com/ipfs/go-ipfs/issues/1216 ?
<vitzli> yeah, I'm talking about it and #898, 3.2GB in 32 minutes in #898 and 155GB in 36 hour in #1216 give the same speed of 1.2-1.6 MB/s

<whyrusleeping> mmmm, 6TB SSD's will ship in July
<whyrusleeping> goodbye HDDs
<krl> :D
<krl> at what price?
<whyrusleeping> eh, price doesnt matter too much
<whyrusleeping> the biggest thing is that they can acheive that density
<whyrusleeping> in a few years, theyll be within the price range of us mortals
<krl> i'm kind of excited about memristor based memory tech
<krl> but that's further down the road
<krl> then we'll see some mad density
<whyrusleeping> yeah, its exciting to see this, because all of these companies that make their bread and butter off of spinning hard disks will have to adapt or die

<whyrusleeping> lol
<grawity> you know what this seriously reminds me of? venti/fossil on plan9
<whyrusleeping> grawity: you mean ipfs?
<grawity> ipfs and the above 'write-once' comments
<whyrusleeping> oooh, yeah
<whyrusleeping> the write once comment is referring to SMR drives
mitchty has joined #ipfs
<whyrusleeping> which would actually be a good fit for ipfs
<grawity> venti and ipfs (and git) are all write-once with hashes used as data addresses, and they say bell labs have been using the same filesystem on WORM for several decades, which is really awesome in a way
<grawity> like that post about utf-8 history where rsc just digs through decade-old backups with a 'cd /n/1992' or something
<grawity> so I kinda hope this'll actually work out

<jbenet> krl: btw, i think the problem emerged when it moved to webpack-- some assets arent getting put in the right place or something.
<jbenet> (also, i dont care about webpack, i prefer browserify, but whatever works)
<bengl> (reading up) yes! ipfs-blob-store plz!
<krl> i'm more familiar with browserify actually. what was the percieved benefits for wp?

<rak[2]> is ipfs still "down" ?
<jbenet> rak[2] it shouldnt be down-- some gateways are being sluggish lately, unclear why. maybe something's using them more now.
<rak[2]> jbenet: hrm
<jbenet> also need to fix https://github.com/ipfs/webui/pull/29
<jbenet> rak[2] oh and if you have a long-lived node, can bootstrap to it too-- dont have to use ours
<rak[2]> my log dump is http://sprunge.us/XjeI
<rak[2]> jbenet: i don't know too much about this bootstrapping process.. =P
<rak[2]> all i know is the first few times i used IPFS it just worked.. and i liked that :)

<jbenet> rak[2] i think what we're seeing is slowness because the handshakes are serial and they may time out.
<rak[2]> and now.. it gets angry and i cannot share a picture with a friend..
<jbenet> there's basically a bug we'll fix.
<rak[2]> jbenet: i see.
<jbenet> but it's not "the service is down", it's "the gateways are seeing more use and are thus slower. bugs that have been there that werent giving problems, now are being felt
<rak[2]> well i ran my daemon for a day.. and ipfs swarm peers still returns nothing.
<rak[2]> i don't seem to be able to publish anything to the interwebs :/
<jbenet> rak[2] can you try now?
<krl> jbenet: i also realized, as soon as we have hash-splitting, lots of the generated bundled up javascript will still be de-duplicated
<krl> even minified code, even though i think we should try avoid minification altogether
<krl> zip > minify
<jbenet> krl: yeah, we should just enable it-- it's there: https://github.com/ipfs/go-ipfs/blob/master/importer/chunk/rabin.go
<jbenet> krl: its not tested though. need to check it

<substack> jbenet: regarding the browserify-shim comments, that's something you really shouldn't need to do except with crappy libraries you're better off not using in the first place
<substack> but browserify is built with backend sensibilities in mind, so if you come from frontendlandia it might not click as much as webpack I guess
