rak[2]: thats odd... no other errors printed out?
<whyrusleeping>
gateway nodes might need to be restarted
<whyrusleeping>
you might try restarting your daemon once or twice
<wking>
whyrusleeping: I'm suspicious of the gateway nodes, since I had trouble connecting to them (maybe 20 minutes ago?)
<whyrusleeping>
yyeeaahh.... theyve been wonky lately
<whyrusleeping>
not sure why (since theyre docker and i cant touch them)
<whyrusleeping>
except mars
<whyrusleeping>
so ill look at her
<wking>
I ended up grepping the channel logs for an 'ipfs swarm connect ...' command using a non-gateway IP ;)
<whyrusleeping>
we should publish a list of 'unofficial gateways'
<whyrusleeping>
yeap, mars ran into go-peerstream#5
<whyrusleeping>
jbenet: o/
<rak[2]>
whyrusleeping: i tried restarting the daemon several times today.. let me call tee before running the daemon and grab the log..
<wking>
sounds good to me. Or have your node cache and retry previous peers. I think that was mentioned in one of the issues I skimmed while trying to figure out how to connect
<whyrusleeping>
rak[2]: no need, its the gateways, theyre messed up
<whyrusleeping>
i fixed the memory leak bugs that caused an immediate panic and restart
<whyrusleeping>
so now they are getting into bad states and hanging
<whyrusleeping>
which makes it seem worse overall than before
<whyrusleeping>
lol
<rak[2]>
intersting.
<rak[2]>
well, i thought earlier i should have probably been in here asking questions in stead of trying to resolve msyelf. i had a feeling it may not be on my end.. =P
<whyrusleeping>
rak[2]: yeap, when things dont behave the way you think they should, its normally our fault
<whyrusleeping>
and letting us know is a good first step
<jbenet>
rebooted gateways
<jbenet>
(fourth time today)
<whyrusleeping>
jbenet: its go-peerstream#5
<whyrusleeping>
at least, thats what mars has hit every single time
<jbenet>
yeahhh-- that's annoying. i started the fix for that-- it's a tricky problem.
<whyrusleeping>
yeap, its non-trivial
<whyrusleeping>
because we also need to time things out
<whyrusleeping>
because if we have ten workers, that just makes it take ten times as long to deadlock
<jbenet>
(and, fix has to go in p2p/net/swarm/ instead, becuase handshakes neet to timeout
<jbenet>
haha yep, tiemouts make it complicated)
<whyrusleeping>

whyrusleeping: something is hosing the gateways very often, i dont think it's go-peerstream, they didnt ever get hosed this often.
grncdr1 is now known as grncdr
<cryptix>
okay - i guess the actual refactor of the http gw has to wait until next week - i have to be more conservative with my time estimates next time

the error handling in that thing could use a major overhaul

[go-ipfs] jbenet pushed 2 new commits to master: http://git.io/vUnEc
<ipfsbot>
go-ipfs/master 73e3e90 Juan Batiz-Benet: simple ipns-republish script stopgap
<ipfsbot>
go-ipfs/master e67c2a7 Juan Batiz-Benet: version bump to 0.3.4...
<cryptix>
i think we should choose a good error wrapping package that takes code locations - personally i wouldnt have objections about users seeing error stack traces on alpha software - and it would most likely also help us to understand their bug reports
<krl>
i think this might be an interesting approach for standalone electron-client stuff also
vitzli has joined #ipfs
<jbenet>
krl: oh yeah i wanted to take a look-- so is this basically doing publishing of js modules?
<krl>
yeah, kind of like require(hash)
<krl>
and also has browserify import support
<krl>
and keeps a list of local names-for-hashes, that you can tweak as you wish
<jbenet>
ohhhhhh awesome!
<jbenet>
sorry, the example is a bit unclear-- wasnt getting it at first
<krl>
yeah, i slapped the readme together way too late yesterday
<krl>
i still need to work on terminology
<jbenet>
so i want to make `ipm` which is like npm but with ipfs. for the node part of things, i want to just use npm modules exactly, and just allow publishing directly to ipfs
<krl>
atm, the actual bootloader is around 100 lines, the rest is read from ipfs
<jbenet>
krl: btw, if we make an abstract-blob-store then we can use ipfs with bengl's reginabox
<vitzli>
yeah, I'm talking about it and #898, 3.2GB in 32 minutes in #898 and 155GB in 36 hour in #1216 give the same speed of 1.2-1.6 MB/s
<ipfsbot>

<krl>
:D
<krl>
at what price?
<whyrusleeping>
eh, price doesnt matter too much
<whyrusleeping>
the biggest thing is that they can acheive that density
<whyrusleeping>
in a few years, theyll be within the price range of us mortals
<krl>
i'm kind of excited about memristor based memory tech
<krl>
but that's further down the road
<krl>
then we'll see some mad density
<whyrusleeping>
yeah, its exciting to see this, because all of these companies that make their bread and butter off of spinning hard disks will have to adapt or die

<grawity>

<whyrusleeping>
grawity: you mean ipfs?
<grawity>
ipfs and the above 'write-once' comments
<whyrusleeping>
oooh, yeah
<whyrusleeping>
the write once comment is referring to SMR drives
mitchty has joined #ipfs
<whyrusleeping>
which would actually be a good fit for ipfs
<grawity>
venti and ipfs (and git) are all write-once with hashes used as data addresses, and they say bell labs have been using the same filesystem on WORM for several decades, which is really awesome in a way
<grawity>
like that post about utf-8 history where rsc just digs through decade-old backups with a 'cd /n/1992' or something
<grawity>
so I kinda hope this'll actually work out
