<groxx>
hopefully this isn't an "RTFM" level question, but: how much bandwidth overhead should I expect? I'm seeing ~8MB/s for the IPFS process, but `ipfs stats bw --poll` rarely goes above 1MB/s.
notduncansmith has joined #ipfs
notduncansmith has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<whyrusleeping>
groxx: yeah, i'm not quite sure why theres so much of a discrepancy there
<whyrusleeping>
to the best of my knowledge, 'ipfs stats bw' reports exactly the number of bytes being sent out over the network
<whyrusleeping>
one thing to note though: 'ipfs stats bw' reports in bytes, where your standard tools report in bits
<whyrusleeping>
so seeing things off by a multiple of 8 might imply that that is the issue
<groxx>
unfortunately that's not the case here. 115mb/s connection, maxing it out shows ~14MB/s with the same tool :| and the case is right in all locations.
<groxx>
well, ignoring the 'm' vs 'M'. everyone seems to mimic the 'b' or 'B' case.
<whyrusleeping>
groxx: okay, just making sure
<whyrusleeping>
i really wish i knew what the discrepancy there was
<groxx>
yup. it seemed high to me, figured it might be worth checking on :)
<whyrusleeping>
yep!
<whyrusleeping>
let me know if you have any ideas
<groxx>
I just installed to play around (thanks kyledrake , you're pushing back my bedtime yet again) since I've been meaning to for a while, and that was the second thing that caught my attention
<whyrusleeping>
i'm not sure if theres an issue open for that, but if not, it might be worth opening one
<whyrusleeping>
lol, portland meetup?
<groxx>
_first_ thing that caught my attention was that I have no clue how to find the /readme file again. and the --help doesn't mention localhost:5001/webui. after I closed that console, I had to check online for info on how to use a command-line tool, which is kinda weird :|
<whyrusleeping>
finding the readme thing again is definitely awkward, we're trying to find a good UX for that
<whyrusleeping>
but 'ipfs --help'
<groxx>
nah, just a neocities fan, read about ipfs prior to their blog post, and then they started tweeting ipfs hashes to troll everyone's sleep
<whyrusleeping>
lol
<whyrusleeping>
'ipfs commands' lists out every single command
<whyrusleeping>
and every command has a '--help' entry to explain it
<groxx>
none of which includes readme :| that is a great command tho
lhobas has quit [Ping timeout: 264 seconds]
<whyrusleeping>
lol 'ipfs readme' would be a good command
<whyrusleeping>
we're planning on having 'ipfs tour' that will walk you through the basics of using the tool
<groxx>
yeah, I stepped through that out of curiosity :)
<whyrusleeping>
you can list out hashes that are on your system (normally files) with 'ipfs pin ls --type=recursive'
<whyrusleeping>
thats gonna spit some hashes at you
<whyrusleeping>
which you can either 'ipfs ls' or 'ipfs cat'
lhobas has joined #ipfs
<groxx>
yeah, I figured that might be the sure-fire way to find it, if I had the time to dive through them. I'm about to zonk though, sadly, so I'll have to tackle it another day :)
<whyrusleeping>
kyledrake: your twitter cover photo is *very* portland
<groxx>
I'll try to remember to check the issues for the bandwidth tho. and there are a couple "documentation" issues that might maybe fit, but should I open a new one / add a comment to one in particular, for the /readme thing?
<whyrusleeping>
yeah, feel free to open new issues
<whyrusleeping>
we can always close them if we think they are a dupe
hjoest has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
<groxx>
can do. more often that seems to be bad etiquette, didn't want to just (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ it onto the already-large heap

hjoest has joined #ipfs

ups, not FTPS - IPFS
<ike_>
a long night, four beers, four shots, and then IPFS

<davidar>
ah
<cryptotec>
so instead of distributing all files to all Peers can I selectivly distribute?
<davidar>
cryptotec: ipfs doesn't yet support that, but it will
<davidar>
ike_: drunk irc'ing probably isn't a good idea :p

definitely

so currently if I want to say, use IPFS in a Zone-Type System to distribute data I have to distribute them to all Peers within the Trusted network

<whyrusleeping>
right, but the build directives should ignore the file if youre on go1.5
<Luzifer>
`go fmt` fails as you are trying to build invalid go code…
<whyrusleeping>
does gobuilder run go fmt?
<Luzifer>
yep. since the beginning.
<whyrusleeping>
huh, whys that?
<Luzifer>
in order to check whether the build has invalid go code…
<whyrusleeping>
but doesnt building do the same thing?
<Luzifer>
then it would fail on your code…
<whyrusleeping>
nope, go build works fine
<Luzifer>
I know. (I tried it… see pastebin)
elsehow has quit [Ping timeout: 268 seconds]

yeah, so if the point of running the go fmt is to validate the go code, and building does that just the same
<whyrusleeping>
why is the fmt needed?

obviously it doesn't do the same. otherwise it would fail too.

daviddias: last night you said that IPNS was a special case of something else, which is related to a new mutable filesystem layer. Can you point me at some starting points (issues wiki etc) for reading about these things?

also has anyone reached out to Ward Cunningham about porting Smallest Federated Wiki to run directly out of IPFS? I think that this should happen.

voxelot: yeah, i have a pretty good idea of how IPNS works, but david was talking about some new mutable filesystem support (maybe only in the Node impl, see https://github.com/ipfs/node-ipfs-api/issues/72) and how they both used the same underlying type
<voxelot>
ohh interesting, thanks edrex, didn't know about that
