<ShmultzDiscord[m> Idk if i understand things correctly, but i will ask my question anyway.. Is it plausible to create quite small blocks but then have many different ways of viewing a scattered sampling of those blocks and represent as a whole using a merkle tree?
verin0x7 has joined #ipfs
<ShmultzDiscord[m> Kind of switching it from being the focus on large blocks and small individual merkle trees.. to tons of small blocks and tons of different merkle trees having a different view of the organization and inclusion of blocks
<ShmultzDiscord[m> Or is that abstracting too far away from the design of ipfs to be reasonably useful?

<olizilla[m]> DarkDrgn2k: no. if you have a very small number of connections, then ipfs would try and reconnect to any peers in the bootstrap. Peers that you `swarm connect` to have a higher weighting, so your node is less likely to trim those connections if you have lots... more info here https://github.com/ipfs/go-ipfs/issues/6097

<aha[m]1> hi. apologies for possibly asking some beginners question again. however, there's something about IPFS (..and DAT, for that matter) which seems to fail registering.
fredthomsen has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<aha[m]1> To put it simply, its a question of - why does IPFS has to be tied to renumeration - or is it not?
garv has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<aha[m]1> Sure, in current form/version people don't use any payment system for operating in IPFS protocol - however, the who;e thing seems to be geared towards payements for things like file storage and distribution, no?
<swedneck__> not really
<swedneck__> ipfs is a lot like torrents
<swedneck__> pinning services could (and probably do) exist for torrents too, they're just way more useful for IPFS since you don't need a specific torrent file to be useful
pecastro has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<aha[m]1> yes. thanks. it does seem like, in some ways an improved bittorrent, and with the web interface pretty much in mind too.
lovell has left #ipfs [#ipfs]
<aha[m]1> however, after reading a bit of the spec and hearing a few of the people behind the tech talking about it - there's a feeling that the way they think files will be constantly online, is only through some payments. (they call it incentives..)
<swedneck__> i'm pretty sure bitswap is supposed to reward people who provide data
<swedneck__> for example if you provide a lot of people with data that they want, they'll give you higher priority in giving you the data you want
<aha[m]1> if this is mistaken - which i hope to be - what exactly is the relationship between filecoin, ipfs, and the various bodies funding the whole technology?
Yaqui has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<swedneck__> filecoin is a separate layer ontop of ipfs, you absolutely don't have to use it
hart has joined #ipfs
<swedneck__> as for funding i have no idea really
<aha[m]1> sorry.. bitswap? nothing to do with adsl, i persume.
leicester has joined #ipfs
<swedneck__> bitswap is what IPFS uses to actually send/recieve data afaik
<aha[m]1> i see.. oh! thanks! so it thinks that sending more data might warrant a reward in it's core?
