<josephnicholasGM> Hello I am very new to IPFS and just read some basics, on getting putting files/folders on ipfs
<josephnicholasGM> Just one question though is there a way to ls all of the files and folders you put in ipfs?
Guest32 has quit [Disconnected by services]
<josephnicholasGM> and can you add some another folder to file to the already pushed directory in IPFS?
<josephnicholasGM> thanks
spinza has joined #ipfs
<swednec5> how are you using ipfs?
<swednec5> commandline, ipfs-desktop/webui?
<josephnicholasGM> command line sir
<swednec5> are you just using `ipfs add`?
clarkenciel[m] has left #ipfs ["User left"]
<voker57> josephnicholasGM: you can add a file to folder but folder hash will change
<voker57> easy way to manipulate folders is `ipfs files`
<swednec5> easier way is using ipfs-desktop/webui :P
<josephnicholasGM> Thanks, so I already did IPFS add with alot of files and folders, now I want to list to those files
<josephnicholasGM> I mean list the hashes
<swednec5> `ipfs refs <CID>` will list the CIDs of all files in a directory
<swednec5> CID being the technically correct term for what people call hashes, in IPFS context
<josephnicholasGM> Okay, so CID would be the peerid?
<swednec5> not sure why you mention peerid all of a sudden :P
<swednec5> `ipfs pins ls`
<swednec5> will list all objects your node has pinned
<swednec5> by default `ipfs add` will pin the files you add
<josephnicholasGM> Wow thanks, but would an option on <CID> recursive path <Path> because currently its just <CID> recursive right?
kaotisk has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<swednec5> you'll have to re-phrase that, it sounds like a math problem :P
kaotisk has joined #ipfs
polman has joined #ipfs
<josephnicholasGM> Am I makeing sense?
mapetik has joined #ipfs
<swednec5> hmm, i don't think i'm getting it
<swednec5> oh wait, do you mean that `ipfs pin ls` is outputting too many things?
<josephnicholasGM> so when I do `ipfs pin ls` it outputs all the CID correct?
<swednec5> yes
<josephnicholasGM> what I am saying is, does `ipfs pin ls` have an option to print not just the CID, but the path referenced by the CID as well
<swednec5> ah, no
<swednec5> to preserve the path, you'll want to use `ipfs files`
<swednec5> unless you need to use ipfs in scripts, it's probably better to use the webui or ipfs-desktop
<swednec5> (or siderus-orion)
<josephnicholasGM> Yeah I will build the linux one and try the desktop version, I was just want to understand it in backend first since I will be using it in a project.
<swednec5> actually i'm not sure this solves your issue
<swednec5> you want to see the path on the filesystem, correct?
<swednec5> `<CID> - /home/joseph/file`
<josephnicholasGM> yes something like that, I don'e know if CLI commands already support that
<swednec5> by default `ipfs add` copies the data to `~/.ipfs/blocks/
<swednec5> * by default `ipfs add` copies the data to `~/.ipfs/blocks/`
<josephnicholasGM> so there are also 2 attributes in `ipfs pin ls` recursive and indirect
<josephnicholasGM> what's the difference?
<swednec5> `ipfs pin ls --help`
polman has quit [Ping timeout: 265 seconds]
polman has joined #ipfs
<josephnicholasGM> Thanks
<swednec5> `--help` can be added to all ipfs commands for some extra info

toxync01 has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<josephnicholasGM> So basically, when using CLI. When I forget or lose track of the CIDs, I will have to do `ipfs pin ls` then try the CIDs 1 by 1?
<swednec5> you can use `ipfs files` to give CID's names
<josephnicholasGM> Weird it says it doesn't exist
<swednec5> ?
fleeky has quit [Ping timeout: 276 seconds]
<josephnicholasGM> So I did a `ipfs files ls <my local dir that I pushed to ipfs>` then it says it doesn't exist
<swednec5> you need to add CIDs to it first
polman has quit [Ping timeout: 245 seconds]
<swednec5> `ipfs files cp <CID> /some/path/file.ext`
<swednec5> * `ipfs files cp <CID> /some/path`
<swednec5> eg `ipfs files cp QmZGNUyrwwqHnaD8cgMWNUGDubny7Ro3pJ2P5yJ8LiVxMu /websites/ipfs.io`
<josephnicholasGM> but when I do `ipfs ls /ipfs/QmV9oLQmAj6WWVV8U3tcYGatNmDBojXhS3Ghgr7pCB8aLQ` I got the right output
<swednec5> ?
<josephnicholasGM> where do I get the CID to assign in the path?
polman has joined #ipfs
<swednec5> you get it from `ipfs add`
<swednec5> `ipfs add -Q` will only print the highest-level CID
<swednec5> i.e. the CID that contains all the content you added
<josephnicholasGM> So I `ipfs add` the directory then `ipfs files cp` it after?
<josephnicholasGM> So what if I lose the CID from `ipfs add`?
<swednec5> oh i see what you mean by "ipfs ls` giving the right output
<swednec5> by wrapping content in a directory it'll preserve the names
<swednec5> `ipfs add -w` does this automatically
<swednec5> however keep in mind that the names are only available from the highest-level CID
<swednec5> whereas `ipfs files` makes it easy to browse what you have pinned on your node, you just have to make sure to label everything you add
