<Guy->
hi, is it OK to discuss coreelec here? I'd like help diagnosing a bootloop due to a kodi crash

<pragmaticenigma>
probably better to seek out their support system Guy-
<Guy->
as far as I was able to discover, that's a web forum :/
<Guy->
so, in the abstract then: how would you go about diagnosing why kodi aborts with a sigbus on startup?
<Guy->
if we hit any coreelec specifics, I'll go away
<pragmaticenigma>
that sounds like a specific problem to the coreelec distro... if all they offer is the web forum... then you should use that
<Guy->
the problem may be specific, but the steps to troubleshoot probably aren't
<pragmaticenigma>
how their system boots is specific to how they built their environment... it doesn't do their community any good to diagnose bugs here
<Guy->
for example, maybe I need to create an advancedsettings.xml with some magic in it to increase loglevel, or similar
<Guy->
that would then be the same on libreelec, wouldn't it?
<Guy->
I already have a bunch of logs, including stacktraces, but they don't really help pinpoint the specific problem
<Guy->
it says "FATAL: CServiceManager::InitStageTwo: Unable to start CAddonMgr", but not why
<pragmaticenigma>
no... just like you can't get help for a debian problem in Ubuntu, or an Ubuntu problem in Debian... the same would apply here... volunteers here will not necassarily know the differences between the two platforms. There is a reason the two got forked... many here, may not follow that... and again, it does that community no good to get help here... they will then remain unaware of the issue
andy-burns has joined #libreelec
<Guy->
to be fair, there are so many commonalities between Ubuntu and Debian that troubleshooting steps can well be similar :) e.g. using strace would be completely distribution agnostic
<pragmaticenigma>
still doesn't help that community
<Guy->
and so far I have no reason to believe that my issue is related to anything but my specific Kodi installation
<Guy->
I can help the community if I have information that's useful to it, but I don't yet, and I'm not likely to register into a web forum unless there is a pressing need
<Guy->
but if you're unwilling to help (a position I can sympathize with), I'll try to find a kodi support channel
<pragmaticenigma>
#kodi
<Guy->
OK, thanks

<buzzmarshall>
ive worked with both systems and even tho CE kinda was taken from LE over the years they have gone in different directions in their mandate with LE concentrating on moving most of the core up to the mainstream kernels while CE is stuck in the past mostly based on the vendors bsp's
<buzzmarshall>
so its best to take issues with kodi specific up in their forums
<buzzmarshall>
unless your capable of doing your own source issues and hardcore tracing and debugging its kinda hard without someone that understands the nuiances of their build
<pragmaticenigma>
agreed buzzmarshall ... unfortunately they parted already, but I like what you have to say there
<buzzmarshall>
thanx
<buzzmarshall>
i shoulda looked and seen he was gone... sorry brain fart on my part
<buzzmarshall>
lol
<pragmaticenigma>
all good :) what you stated though, is right on the nose and something that I've been trying to better put together
<buzzmarshall>
i mostly do my own thing but try and keep track of somethings just for my own curiosity
<buzzmarshall>
as they have both kinda diverged it will be interesting to see where CE goes as AML support with LE and mainstream is getting much better and i am not sure how much worth will be left in trying to go CE's way and use the old vendor based bsp's
<buzzmarshall>
thats kinda why i watch out of curiosity
<pragmaticenigma>
someone will always have an interest in it... but ARM seems to be a direction a lot of vendors are interested in manufacturing for
<buzzmarshall>
personally now i have all the older S812's and everything else moving up now running on the 5.7/5.8 mainstream kernels

normally the hardware chipset will some propriatary api or setup that uses ip-protected firmware on a lot of the embedded market but there's some open source projects that are aimed at providing api's to work the onboard hardware
<buzzmarshall>
and then with things like the codec stuff alot of movement has been made in creating the missing parts in open source things like v4l and ffmpeg
<buzzmarshall>
and with those projects sticking a lot more tighter to the mainstream kernels things are slowly being put in place to make things easier to maintain and create for new devices going forward
<buzzmarshall>
H265 tho still is a wip with projects like v4l and ffmpeg
<buzzmarshall>
most of the lower codecs are already decently supported its just the 4k stuff that needs to be worked out in open source
<buzzmarshall>
most of the stuff were seeing on aml is using stateful codec setups while when looking at the rpi4 and a few other devices they are making better headway at this time as those ones are stateless where there are already a few pieces of open source code thats being used to move those devices forward a bit quicker
<buzzmarshall>
between those issues and v4l/ffmpeg not having solid stateful code for the hevc codecs yet is where theres work that needs to be done
<buzzmarshall>
i think once those things are in place i think the reality of proper hardware/software acceleration and performance will become much more of a reality on the arm gpus and the socs
<buzzmarshall>
i think rpi4 tho and a few others will cross the hevc line tho 1st

To install librelec manually, can I uncompress the image file, LibreELEC-RPi4.arm-9.2.3.img.gz, and then dd the image file to a microSD card via my laptop?

zsw: The installation instructions are pretty well documented on the site, and they're what is recommended. You can dd the image, but I would recommend following the instructions
