<akaizen> mmind00: Why is CONFIG_ROOT_NFS missing from the 4.2 kernel?
<akaizen> The code is there but the option wont appear even after enabling builtin NFS client
<akaizen> nvm
<akaizen> Need Kernel IP autoconfig + DHCP

<akaizen> Someties my display is like 720p or some thing, other times its 1080p
<akaizen> there might be some race condition with hdmi driver
<akaizen> also what are the console options, which is /dev/tty0 and /dev/ttyS{0,1,2} ? Which is the hardware SERIAL on firefly? Or is this defined in dtb?
rory096 has joined #linux-rockchip
<akaizen> naobsd: thanks but how do I know which /dev/ttySX the debug serial port maps to?
<naobsd> rk3288.dtsi has definitions to fix uartX == ttySX
<naobsd> ah
<naobsd> you asked about debug serial port... it's UART2
<akaizen> ah ok :)
<akaizen> thanks!
<akaizen> alright.. I got gentoo working but it wont let me login lol
<akaizen> messed around with /etc/securetty but getting nowhere
<akaizen> Trying the debian net-boot but getting nowhere
<akaizen> using the 4.2 kernel and firefly.dtb and debian initrd.gz
<akaizen> but still getting 'cant mount rootfs'

<mrjay> akaizen: ROOT_NFS Depends on: NETWORK_FILESYSTEMS && NFS_FS && IP_PNP
<mrjay> akaizen: when in kernel config menu press "/" and put there search fraze without "CONFIG_" part and don't forget about dependency. Without that menu entry wan't be visible
<akaizen> mrjay: Thanks!

<akaizen> Hmm this probably doesnt mean much but why is BogoMIPS on the 4.2 kernel 12 where as older kernels its 48?
<akaizen> Are 3 core asleep?
<akaizen> nope seems fine .. just on conservative governor but max cpufreq is 1608 Mhz vs 1800 Mhz on other images

<lautriv_> akaizen, got your NFS booting ?
<akaizen> lautriv_: yes. I couldnt get a nice working rootfs
<akaizen> i ended up using a SDCARD and it worked pretty much instantly
<akaizen> then i used gparted to partion emmc and then repeated the process (via scripts) and it worked great
<lautriv_> since rockchips have a lame ethernet, it would be also faster but less useful for developing.

<akaizen> yea its nice if you're switching kernels quickly
<akaizen> but the ethernet loads slawer than SD whihc is slower thab eMMC
<akaizen> on tftp on 1000, kernel loads in @ 2~3 MB/s
<akaizen> NAND is 256ms
<akaizen> eMMC is like 175ms
<akaizen> which is ! 12 MB/s

<mmind00> akaizen: and depending on what kernel you use, that can get even faster (mainline dw_mmc does not support tuning for the rk3288 yet)
<lautriv_> mmind00, mainline as in linux or android ?
<mmind00> lautriv_: mainline as in Linux-kernel 4.2 [I don't care to much about specific userspaces :-) ] ... rk3288 and newer do support phase-tuning the clk phases to reach uhs speeds
<lautriv_> mmind00, i was not about userspace but hardware support.
<mmind00> lautriv_: so yes, rk3288 and newer (rk3036 etc and rk3368) can use higher speeds of uhs cards / emmcs
<Helle> mmmmm, out of all the rockchip chips, which can drive monitors at resolutions other then the normal ones ?, I need a new "cheap HDMI stick" and it needs to drive a 1680x1050 monitor
<lautriv_> Helle, the resolution itself is not the primary issue as long you won't have some accel.
<Helle> lautriv_: mmmm, well, my old 3066 can't do anything special :)
<Helle> but yeah, I am taking recommendations anyway
<lautriv_> Helle, what is the purpose of that target ?
<Helle> lautriv_: native resolution of a bunch of "TV's" (presentation monitors) I have
<Helle> direct sunlight visible screens, so something I'd like to keep :)
<lautriv_> and the presentation is more about highres-graphics than video-streaming ?

<Helle> lautriv_: yep
<Helle> lautriv_: I mean the application is a bit toyish (else I'd get some more high-end embedded computer), these are the old screens, but I'd like to put them to good use
<lautriv_> i would probably prefer a wondermedia instead rockchip ;)
<Helle> lautriv_: well, it's a issue of what is availible :(
<Helle> it's pretty hard to actually get sub 50 euro sticks that use something else
<lautriv_> the problem is not the price but something less propietary. i guess for a proper supported arm we have to wait for AMD ...
<Helle> If this was for anything remotely serious, I'd just deal with the mess that is the Intel Compute Stick
<Helle> I guess the Odroid C1 might be an option, if I can deal with having everything else stuck on
<lautriv_> or you spend a bit more space and grab some x86 based diskless clients from ebay :o)
<Helle> lautriv_: too low CPU power actually :)
<Helle> those things tend to be slooooow and ooooold
<lautriv_> even a simple VIA beats the arm
<Helle> sure, but a Geode doesn't
<lautriv_> few months ago i got a HP diskless client from ebay for €20, powered by 9W and running on 1440x1050 smooth.
<Helle> sure, but it's too much luck
<Helle> I just want to order 1-2 now and then order a further 8-10 later (yes, we have that many screens lying around, they where previously used in a videowall)
<Helle> ooops, lost track of time and still need to shopping
<Helle> else I'll starve :P

<Helle> oh, other question, what image (with root, etc) will likely work on a device that seems to be mostly just a MK808B clone ?
<lautriv_> Helle, unfortunately there is no "much likely" some images fail even when meant for the device.
<Helle> lautriv_: well, any SD card writeable ones I should try ?
<lautriv_> Helle, you may have luck, even more when you have UART attached to see what exactly goes downhill.
<Helle> lautriv_: I haven't figured out where the uart lives, though I have my suspicion
<lautriv_> Helle, made a highres photo ?
<Helle> lautriv_: I'll make one in a bit, need to get some RL stuff done (real life, my greatest enemy)

<mrjay> Helle: about mk808b clone ... old picuntu images should work ... if gpio pins in your device have same functionality as mk808b. You can do ubuntu with mainline kernel but there are some bugs with dwmmc driver (i think) on high load.
<Helle> mrjay: any link to those images, the picuntu website seems broken
<mrjay> Helle: You can search freaktab rk3066 section ... there should be something if i remember correctly
<Helle> mrjay: they link to the official website, where nothing is to be found anymore "redoing the website..."
<mrjay> mmind00: will edma and pl330 patches land in 4.3?
<mmind00> mrjay: not 4.3 ... we're in the middle of the merge-window already ... hopefully it will make it into 4.4 though
<Helle> mmmm, let's see
GriefNorth has quit [Ping timeout: 256 seconds]
<mrjay> mmind00: also would be great
<mrjay> mmind00: So it should land in linux-next after 4.3 release?
<mmind00> mrjay: the timing is actually different .... we're in the merge-window until next sunday (4.3-rc1 release), after this maintainers collect fixes for 4.3 as well as new stuff for 4.4
<mmind00> mrjay: but of course it depends on maintainers agreeing on the implementation first
<mrjay> mmind00: thanks for the clarification ... need to read more on kernel development process topic ;)
<mmind00> mrjay: hehe, no problem ... glad to help :-)
<mrjay> mmind00: btw ... is there a way in dts to config rockchip gpio pin properties (bias, drive strength... etc) inline ... i wan't to test (faster) if issues i'm having with mmc are caused by interference?
<mmind00> mrjay: pin settings always need to be in sub-nodes that get referenced ... but they don't need to be shared ... so you can copy the generic ones to something specific to the mmc and then just modify those
<mmind00> mrjay: alternatively you could mount a debugfs somewhere and see if the pinctrl debugfs allows to even set this at runtime (I'm not sure if it does)
<mrjay> mmind00: U...U...U... the second one ... great idea! thanks
<mrjay> mmind00: s/thanks/tahnks!/
<mmind00> mrjay: :-D
