<bashintosh> amstan: "arch/arm/boot/zImage is ready" ^_^
<amstan> \o/
<bashintosh> Had to use archlinux toolchain tho - linaro would not build, complaining about fstack-protector-strong not supported :(
<amstan> chromeos uses 4.9, arch uses 5.2
<amstan> i think your linaro is 4.8, so that could explain it
<bashintosh> right - I read fstack-protector-strong was supported after gcc 4.9.. Happy days anyway!
<amstan> it's also 4.9, but we have a team of people fine tuning it and keeping track of changes we might need, so it might be more advanced than the vanilla 4.9

<naobsd> chromebook flip will be sold in japan very soon...
<naobsd> but
<naobsd> keyboard layout is JP :(
<naobsd> only 2GB model for consumer, 4GB is for business :( :(
<naobsd> 2GB model is 39800JPY = 330USD
<naobsd> terrible
ganbold has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<amstan> naobsd: sorry to hear that
<naobsd> probably buy 4GB on US amazon + transfer service will be cheap ;)
<amstan> yeah, probably best
<amstan> i recently payed about $50 to ship one to romania, wasn't too hard
<amstan> paid*
<naobsd> worst thing is... my wallet is protected very strongly, I cannot open it ;)

<bashintosh> naobsd: from your experience, is a compressed kernel image (zImage) built into kernel.img with mkkrnlimg, supposed to boot? No kernel in boot.img in my case.
<bashintosh> there could be a million reasons why it doesn't boot, but sadly the boot process stops at "Starting kernel" with no further info :(
<bashintosh> so I am trying to figure if my process to get to kernel.img is correct or not first :)
<amstan> bashintosh: this is still for the chromebook?
<bashintosh> amstan: just the kernel (ChromeOS 3.14) - hardware is CX929 for now, RK3288 PMIC ACT8846. Can try other boards RK3288 based but I guess it'll be the same result..
<amstan> there was some magic regarding early uart
<amstan> i think the firmware set it up, then the kernel used something that the firmware left somewhere
<bashintosh> amstan: mmmh, that could explain why it "hangs" - something "easy" to get rid of perhaps? When you say firmware you mean Chromebook firmware right?

<bashintosh> seems like I can possibly tweak the kernel config by removing what the patch adds and give it a crack!

<naobsd> bashintosh: it depends on loader implementation. RK proprietary and RK fork of u-boot supports kernel in kernel.img and initramfs in boot.img
<naobsd> bashintosh: or, you asked about "compressed"? which is the point of your question?
<naobsd> any of kernel image (Image or zImage) is just a binary blob. in-kernel self (de)compression code cannot affect loader behaviour
<naobsd> (I'm not talking about loader decompression support)

<bashintosh> naobsd: thanks! Currently I am using RK spin of U-Boot - my question is: creating kernel.img from zImage (compressed) using mkkrnlimg is supposed to be the "proper" way to get a working kernel.img?
<bashintosh> Does kernel.img have anything to do with the DT blob? I have seen some cases where they seem to merge .dtb with kernel.img but I think that could be for mainline kernels only, not sure.
<naobsd> kernel.img doesn't to anything with dtb
<naobsd> you may combine kernel (!kernel.img) and dtb if kernel (!kernel.img) support it
