<ullbeking> 00:53 <tuxd3v> ullbeking, someday it will be bigger than the the kernel itself :)
<ullbeking> this reminds me of the #include'd preprocessor .h files for the X Window System being larger than the entire Unix V7 source code.

<Necrosporus> Is it safe to power rk3399 up without cooling? All I want is to see on UART whenever the computer is alive or dead
<tuxd3v> Necrosporus, for that , I believe yes
<tuxd3v> but don't push the cpu up
<Necrosporus> But it might get pushed up by loading and unpacking the kernel
<Necrosporus> if it's present
<Necrosporus> Also what's acceptable temperature?
<tuxd3v> rk3399 says in its datasheet that it operates [ 0, 80 ] C
<tuxd3v> it will do a emergency shutdown at 85 C I believe
<tuxd3v> Mesure with your finger above it
<tuxd3v> and do a cat of /sys/class/hwmon
<tuxd3v> if you find it is very hot power down :)
<Necrosporus> So, it should be relatively save and won't kill my computer even if it hangs with infinite loop
<tuxd3v> an infinite loop will rise the temps to the roof
<tuxd3v> if it hangs in that situatuin better a hard power down...pusing the power supply cable..
<Necrosporus> tuxd3v, but will it kill the computer?
<Necrosporus> how much time do I have?
<tuxd3v> you need t mesure its temps
<Necrosporus> How long is it supposed to last while being overheated?

<Necrosporus> Does rk3399 have some bootloader burned to chip itself?
<Necrosporus> I mean is it possible to brick rk3399 board irreversibly if I kill bootloader on emmc or something or it will be always boot from microSD even if I destroy all memory chips?
<Necrosporus> * erase
<Ke> maskrom that always executes first is on the soc itself
<Ke> it does not do raminit or so though, mosty just loads the bootloder
<Necrosporus> Yeah, but can it get bootloader from microSD?
<Necrosporus> And how do I make it
vagrantc has joined #linux-rockchip
<Ke> hmm, I boot from sd
ldevulder has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
<stikonas> yeah, bootrom is always there and can boot from removable storage
<stikonas> Necrosporus: it looks for bootloader on a certain sector
<Necrosporus> Not the first one?
<stikonas> Necrosporus: no
<stikonas> Necrosporus: first one is not good for removable media
<robmur01> and if it doesn't find anything anywhere it goes into USB download mode which the rkbin tools can talk to
<stikonas> Necrosporus: not just for rk3399, in general
<stikonas> Necrosporus: first sector is reserved for MBR/GPT
<robmur01> FWIW I've run an RK3288 for a few minutes with no heatsink to probe nearby pins during boot, without issue
<robmur01> (although that one did later die in an unrelated shorted-pins-on-the-PMIC incident...)
<robmur01> if in doubt just hold your fingers on it - the case temperature shouldn't be more than about 10 degrees below the junction temperature, so it should get too hot to touch before it's in any real danger
<robmur01> plus you're a fairly good heatsink - that's what modern phones rely on ;)
<Necrosporus> Will maskrom output anything to UART if absolutely all other bootloaders are missing?
<robmur01> no
<robmur01> but if you plug the USB OTG port into another machine you'll see it appear if it gets as far as that mode
vicencb has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<robmur01> the more annoying case is when it just looks totally dead because the ROM code found a left-over image signature on the eMMC or wherever, tried to boot it and fell over
<robmur01> that's when you pray for a test point on the board for shorting the eMMC clock ;)

<dirkson> Is anyone aware of any open-hardware, RK3399-based computers that I could run mainline linux on?
chewitt has joined #linux-rockchip
<stikonas> dirkson: how open does it have to be. there are schematics for e.g. rockpro64 https://wiki.pine64.org/index.php/ROCKPro64#Board_Information.2C_Schematics_and_Certifications
<stikonas> and you can definitely run mainline linux/u-boot on it
