Hi all. I have a potentially kind of silly question. I've got this tablet that is nearly identical to the one listed as the A-Star KV49L on the wiki. But they are in fact, subtly different pieces of hardware. I discovered this by mocking-up a wiki page for the tablet according to the new device page howto(here's my mock-up https://github.com/cmotc/android_product_antm_revo/blob/master/device_page.wiki
<bdthebc>
). So my question is what would make a variant of a device significant enough(besides someone hacking on it, I'm at least going to keep trying until I break it) to merit it's own wiki page?

plaes: quite amazing how we still have no chip page.
<KotCzarny>
maybe no one is using it
<ssvb>
KotCzarny: CHIP is expected to become available in June 2016, I guess only early engineering samples exist today and the hardware is not yet finalized
<KotCzarny>
so i was right?
<libv>
but quite a few engineering samples are out there already
<libv>
and there still is no page

CHIP has some mainline linux and mainline u-boot support... although neither can read the NAND, obviously... which kind of limits the usefulness, given there's no microSD or any other place for an OS other than USB
<ssvb>
vagrantc: mripard and bbrezill1 are working on NAND support, it is not ready for general use yet
engideavr has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<ssvb>
I guess, NAND is the primary reason why CHIP is going to be available so late
<vagrantc>
ssvb: still running orange pi plus2 based on a 4.3 kernel with some of your patches ... does mainline 4.5.x likely include all those patches?
<ssvb>
vagrantc: these are not my patches :-)
<vagrantc>
speaking from limited understanding, why do people still use nand?
<vagrantc>
ssvb: the patches in the branch you posted?
<vagrantc>
ssvb: your curated collection of patches...
<ssvb>
mainline linux 4.6 is going to be more feature complete for h3
<ssvb>
afaik 4.5 only includes some very basic h3 support
<ssvb>
as for NAND, it is just supposed to be cheaper than eMMC
<vagrantc>
don't need all the features, just mmc, usb, CPU and ram... :)
<vagrantc>
though that may still be asking a bit much
<vagrantc>
sure, it's got a bunch of relevent changes, may as well just try it at some point and find out
<vagrantc>
biggest problem i had was that it require some things as built-ins, rather than working as modules, which makes it hard for a multiplatform kernel

libv: the missing wiki page for CHIP is probably to some extent a marketing issue, they might try to advertise their hardware as something 'unique' and provide their own documentation/collaboration infrastructure to the users
<ssvb>
libv: with the linux-sunxi wiki, CHIP is just one of the tens or hundreds of similar devices :-)
<ssvb>
but of course, anyone who has already got his early board, can create a CHIP page in the linux-sunxi wiki
<ssvb>
this is going to happen sooner or later
<KotCzarny>
unique in a way it has no support?
<ssvb>
no support?
<KotCzarny>
did they provide own sources?
<vagrantc>
it actually had mainline linux/u-boot support long before the early ship dates...
<KotCzarny>
oh, nice at that
<vagrantc>
not that it supported much, but that's more than many boards have that have been out for years
<ssvb>
KotCzarny: you can check http://getchip.com/ and find their blog, forum, documentation webpage, etc.
<ssvb>
vagrantc: it's not too difficult to have the mainline u-boot/kernel support with the old A13 SoC
<KotCzarny>
well, they do have 4.x with nand
<ssvb>
yes, they are just hostages of their choice to rely on NAND too much

doesn't need hdmi on a build farm

Like most tiny computers, the USB port on CHIP provides a limited amount of power. When you plug in a keyboard and an optical mouse, for example, they will draw too much current from CHIP, not leaving enough for the processor
