20:14 <beeble> you have to crossover your uart adapter. rx on pin 1, tx on pin 2, gnd on 3. it has to be able to receive 3.3 input signals. and you should connect with 115200 8bit 1 stop bit and no flow control

20:15 <beeble> and you should connect it to the 3 pin header that is on the board

20:21 <conrad_> thanks! i verified with a pi that the UART adapter works. i tried swapping tx and rx, but no dice. i used `screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200` initially, then tried something like `screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200,cs8,-ixon,-ixoff`. but even when just cat'ing /dev/ttyUSB0 i get absolutely nothing. i'll try the usb thing, that sounds interesting
